As some of you may know, I am daily reading through Scripture in its order. Today’s devotion included Romans 16:1-16. At first glance, this Scripture seems boring, and we are tempted to gloss over it. So much of this Scripture seems repetitive. There seems to be so many unpronounceable names. There seems to be no useful doctrine here. It seems to be just “Greet this person and greet that person”. What does this Scripture have for us today???
There is a lot here. First, this Scripture teaches us who we are in Christ. Second, this Scripture teaches us that we should specifically recognize and compliment each other. Third, this Scripture teaches us that we should greet each other. Fourth, this Scripture teaches us that we should introduce each other to others to help them be accepted. Fifth, we may not like this fifth one, but we should even display public affection for each other like a kiss. OK, we will work up to that one. How about at least a warm hug or a firm handshake or a pat on the back?
For me, when I come to your church, I will lead with my cheek toward you.
First, so who are we in Christ? I have copied and pasted the Scripture but deleted everything else but the descriptions to make it more clear who we are in Christ.
” … servant of the church … the saints … helper of many … fellow workers … risked their own necks … beloved … worked hard … kinsmen … fellow prisoners … outstanding … in Christ … the approved … who are in the Lord … workers in the Lord … a choice man in the Lord … the brethren …”
Second, use a description which fits best, such as these but it can certainly be different, and specifically recognize and compliment each other. Think of what an encouragement that it will be to that person!
Third, if this Scripture teaches us anything, it says 17 times (or thereabouts) that we should greet one another.
Fourth, introduce each other to others to help them be accepted. Think of how much it helped the early church and all of us that Barnabas introduced and “vouched” for Paul. Here is what happened. “When he came to Jerusalem, he was trying to associate with the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took hold of him and brought him to the apostles and described to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had talked to him, and how at Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus.” Acts 9:26-27.
Who knows what good someone that you know can do for the church if you introduce that person, compliment him or her, and cause her to be accepted?!!! I think of both what some of you have done for me and also what I have done for others. What a blessing!
Fifth, “Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you.” Romans 16:16.
