Today’s devotion is Luke 21:7-36 which covers Jesus’ prophecy of the things to come, some of which things were fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem around 70 A.D. and some of which things have not yet been fulfilled such as the Second Coming of Christ.
Jesus exhorted His disciples then as they considered this destruction of Jerusalem around 70 A.D. “and you will be hated by all because of My name. “Yet not a hair of your head will perish. “By your endurance you will gain your lives.” Luke 21:17-19.
Jesus exhorts us, His disciples today, as we consider the things which have not yet been fulfilled such as the Second Coming of Christ. “Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. “But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” Luke 21:34-36.
Some call this “Perserverance of the Saints”, the “P” of “TULIP”. I like to call it “Preservation of the Saints”. Yes, we are exhorted to persevere, and we do have the duty to do so. But, more important, God preserves us. “Yet not a hair of your head will perish.” Luke 21:18. “for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13. “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6.
