The Ascension

Today’s devotion is Luke 24:50-53 which covers the Ascension.

50  And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.

51  While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.

52  And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

53  and were continually in the temple praising God.”  Luke 24:50-53.

The Heidelberg Catechism questions and answers:

Question 49.  Of what advantage to us is Christ’s ascension into heaven?

Answer.  First, that he is our advocate in the presence of his Father in heaven;  secondly, that we have our flesh in heaven as a sure pledge that he, as the head, will also take up to himself, us, his members;  thirdly, that he sends us his Spirit as an earnest, by whose power we “seek the things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God, and not things on earth.

The bookends of Jesus’ coming and going were actions of praising God.  And, so often, the people’s response to Jesus were actions of praising God.

Here are some examples:

Luke 2:13-14
“And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”

Luke 2:20
“The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.”

Luke 23:47
“Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent.”

Luke 24:53
“and were continually in the temple praising God.”

My hope is that as we read this account of the Ascension that our minds will remember that Jesus is now in heaven as our Advocate and will focus on the things above, that our hearts will feel that sure and earnest pledge and comfort that Jesus will pick us up one day soon, and that our voices will praise God with great joy.

P.S.  I am leaving on a long weekend trip but will return with the next post, God willing, next Tuesday, September 28, 2010.  God bless you!
