 ³  When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”

 ⁴  And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us?  My hour has not yet come.”

 ⁵  His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

 ⁶  Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.

 ⁷  Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.”  So they filled them up to the brim.

 ⁸  And He said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”  So they took it to him.

 ⁹  When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom,

 ¹⁰  and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.”

 ¹¹  This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

 ¹²  After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples;  and they stayed there a few days.”  John 2:1-12.

It is astonishing that Jesus made 120 to 150 gallons of great wine.  It is also astonishing that to do it, Jesus used six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification.

Sometimes, we like to whimper and snuff, even reluctantly, that Jesus will provide for our needs but not for our wants.  This miracle smashes that thought and tells us about the Lavish Provider of Joy that Jesus is.

Isaiah 25:6
“The LORD of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain;  A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow, And refined, aged wine.”

Sometimes, we won’t let go of the Law, symbolized by the six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, to purify ourselves.  This miracle also smashes that thought and tells us about the New Provider of Purification that Jesus is.

“For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did:  sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”  Romans 8:3-4.

“More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,”  Philippians 3:8-9. 

And Jesus did all of this to manifest His glory.  “This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.”  John 2:11.
