The Oneness and Hiddenness of Christ: Christ is like “one pearl of great value” and like “a treasure hidden”.

Today’s devotion comes from Matthew 13:44-46.

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again;  and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.”  Matthew 13:44-46.

Christ is like “one pearl of great value”.

We tend to focus just on the value of Christ and gloss over the oneness of Him.  There is nothing like Him.

Article 1:  That there is One Only God.

We all believe with the heart, and confess with the mouth, that there is one only simple and spiritual Being, which we call God;  and that he is eternal, incomprehensible, invisible, immutable, infinite, almighty, perfectly wise, just, good, and the overflowing fountain of all good.  Belgic Confession.

The world seek fine “pearls of wisdom” here and there but is never content.

But, there is “one pearl of great value”, namely our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Who is worthy, so to speak, for us to sell all that we have and buy.  “More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,”  Philippians 3:8.

And, Christ is like “a treasure hidden“.

Likewise, we tend to focus on the value of Christ and gloss over the hiddenness of Him.  Although Christ is worthy of the best search, we will not find Him unless God reveals Him to us.

Christ is wisdom personified.

“4 If you seek her as silver
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
5 Then you will discern the fear of the Lord
And discover the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:4-5.

In Christ “… are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”  Colossians 2:3.

We have seen that Christ hid Himself in parables.

“And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?”  Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted.”  Matthew 13:10-11.

“At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.  Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.  All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father;  nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” Matthew 11:25-27.
