“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” – “And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, …”

Today’s devotion comes from Deuteronomy 4:41-49.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy%204&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Then Moses set apart three cities across the Jordan to the east, that a manslayer might flee there, who unintentionally slew his neighbor without having enmity toward him in time past; and by fleeing to one of these cities he might live:  Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau for the Reubenites, and Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.”  Deuteronomy 4:41-43.

Today’s Scripture shows the LORD’S provision of cities of refuge for those who committed unintentional manslaughter, thus also teaching us a important principle of justice. We should not be in a rush to vengeance. We should not lump all kinds of crimes together and provide only one severe punishment for all of them. Justice requires a distinction between intentional conduct and unintentional conduct.

The LORD loves justice and exercises it on earth.

“Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches;  but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth;  for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.”  Jeremiah 9:23-24.

“The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice;
Let the many islands be glad.
2 Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
3 Fire goes before Him
And burns up His adversaries round about.” Psalm 97:1-3.

“He loves righteousness and justice;
The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the LORD.” Psalm 33:5.

We should do justice ourselves.

“He has told you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justice,
to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8.

“30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
And his tongue speaks justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart;
His steps do not slip.” Psalm 37:30-31.

“God takes His stand in His own congregation;
He judges in the midst of the rulers.
2 How long will you judge unjustly
And show partiality to the wicked? Selah.
3 Vindicate the weak and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.
4 Rescue the weak and needy;
Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.” Psalm 82:1-4.

“3 How blessed are those who keep justice,
Who practice righteousness at all times!

4 Remember me, O LORD, in Your favor toward Your people;
Visit me with Your salvation,
5 That I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones,
That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation,
That I may glory with Your inheritance.” Psalm 106:3-5.
