“beware that you are not ensnared to follow them”

Today’s devotion comes from Deuteronomy 12:28-32.

“Be careful to listen to all these words which I command you, so that it may be well with you and your sons after you forever, for you will be doing what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God.

“When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, beware that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?’  You shall not behave thus toward the LORD your God, for every abominable act which the LORD hates they have done for their gods;  for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.

“Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do;  you shall not add to nor take away from it.”  Deuteronomy 12:28-32.

——————-

Every day we hear messages from TV and the internet and from conservations with acquaintances that present a common dream lifestyle that we should follow.

These messages may tempt us to follow harmful desires or at best empty pursuits.  These messages may draw us away from devotion to God and His word.

The messages may boldly mock or belittle Christians or institutions of marriage and family or truths in the Bible.

Or, the messages may be tricky, by being subtle and superficially appealing.  They may appear good and practical such as saying that it is good to worship and read God’s Word but only on Sunday morning.  They may use a saying like:  “You should not be so heavenly minded that you are no earthly good.”

But, there is hope!

“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  Hebrews 4:12.

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;  so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”  2 Timothy 3:16-17.

What does Scripture state?

“Be careful to listen to all these words which I command you, …”  Verse 28.

“You shall therefore impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul;  and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.  You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up.”  Deuteronomy 11:18-19.

“beware that you are not ensnared to follow them, …”  Verse 30.

“Do not be bound together with unbelievers;  for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?  Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?  Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols?  For we are the temple of the living God;  just as God said,

“I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM;
AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.
“Therefore, COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE,” says the Lord.
“AND DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN;
And I will welcome you.
“And I will be a father to you,
And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,”
Says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.

“How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.

4 The wicked are not so,
But they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the wicked will perish.” Psalm chapter 1.
