“we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” – “the Spirit Himself intercedes for us”

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Samuel 24:8-15.

“Now afterward David arose and went out of the cave and called after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!”  And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the ground and prostrated himself.  David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men, saying, ‘Behold, David seeks to harm you’?  Behold, this day your eyes have seen that the LORD had given you today into my hand in the cave, and some said to kill you, but my eye had pity on you;  and I said, ‘I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD’S anointed.’  Now, my father, see!  Indeed, see the edge of your robe in my hand!  For in that I cut off the edge of your robe and did not kill you, know and perceive that there is no evil or rebellion in my hands, and I have not sinned against you, though you are lying in wait for my life to take it.  May the LORD judge between you and me, and may the LORD avenge me on you;  but my hand shall not be against you.  As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness’;  but my hand shall not be against you.  After whom has the king of Israel come out?  Whom are you pursuing?  A dead dog, a single flea?  The LORD therefore be judge and decide between you and me;  and may He see and plead my cause and deliver me from your hand.”  1 Samuel 24:8-15.

David pled his case to Saul.  David proclaimed his innocence.  David prayed for protection.  We are reminded of the following Psalm of David.

“Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity,
And I have trusted in the LORD without wavering.
2 Examine me, O LORD, and try me;
Test my mind and my heart.
3 For Your lovingkindness is before my eyes,
And I have walked in Your truth.
4 I do not sit with deceitful men,
Nor will I go with pretenders.
5 I hate the assembly of evildoers,
And I will not sit with the wicked.
6 I shall wash my hands in innocence,
And I will go about Your altar, O LORD,
7 That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving
And declare all Your wonders.

8 O LORD, I love the habitation of Your house
And the place where Your glory dwells.
9 Do not take my soul away along with sinners,
Nor my life with men of bloodshed,
10 In whose hands is a wicked scheme,
And whose right hand is full of bribes.
11 But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity;
Redeem me, and be gracious to me.
12 My foot stands on a level place;
In the congregations I shall bless the LORD.” Psalm chapter 26.

And, there is more hope and help!

We have an Advocate, Jesus Christ, to plead our case!

“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.  And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;  and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins;  and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.”  1 John 2:1-2.

And, we have the Helper, the Holy Spirit, to intercede for us according to the will of God!

“In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness;  for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;  and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”  Romans 8:26-27.
