“the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples”

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 11:1-9.

“Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.  In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel;  and the LORD your God said to you, ‘You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be prince over My people Israel.’”  So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD;  and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.

Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus);  and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there.  The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not enter here.”  Nevertheless David captured the stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David).  Now David had said, “Whoever strikes down a Jebusite first shall be chief and commander.”  Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.  Then David dwelt in the stronghold;  therefore it was called the city of David.  He built the city all around, from the Millo even to the surrounding area;  and Joab repaired the rest of the city.  David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him.”  1 Chronicles 11:1-9.

David was chosen by the LORD to be king of Israel.  The LORD’s choice of David was the reason why “the LORD of hosts was with him.”  And, “the LORD of hosts was with him” was the reason why David became greater and greater.

Consider the following from the Canons of the Dordt in the section titled FIRST HEAD OF DOCTRINE Of Divine Predestination that “election is the fountain of every saving good”.

Article 9.  This election was not founded upon foreseen faith, and the obedience of faith, holiness, or any other good quality of disposition in man, as the pre-requisite, cause or condition on which it depended;  but men are chosen to faith and to the obedience of faith, holiness, etc., therefore election is the fountain of every saving good;  from which proceed faith, holiness, and the other gifts of salvation, and finally eternal life itself, as its fruits and effects, according to that of the apostle:  “He hath chosen us (not because we were) but that we should be holy, and without blame, before him in love,”  Ephesians 1:4.

“12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.

13 The LORD looks from heaven;
He sees all the sons of men;
14 From His dwelling place He looks out
On all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 He who fashions the hearts of them all,
He who understands all their works.
16 The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not delivered by great strength.
17 A horse is a false hope for victory;
Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength.” Psalm 33:12-17.

“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God;  the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

“The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the LORD loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the LORD brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.”  Deuteronomy 7:6-8.

“For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;  and these whom He predestined, He also called;  and these whom He called, He also justified;  and these whom He justified, He also glorified.”  Romans 8:29-30.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.”  Ephesians 1:3-6.

“For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;  but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God.  But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”  1 Corinthians 1:26-31.

But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.” 1 Peter 2:9-10.
