Today’s devotion comes from 2 Chronicles 30:13-20.

“Now many people were gathered at Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the second month, a very large assembly.  They arose and removed the altars which were in Jerusalem;  they also removed all the incense altars and cast them into the brook Kidron.  Then they slaughtered the Passover lambs on the fourteenth of the second month.  And the priests and Levites were ashamed of themselves, and consecrated themselves and brought burnt offerings to the house of the LORD.  They stood at their stations after their custom, according to the law of Moses the man of God;  the priests sprinkled the blood which they received from the hand of the Levites.  For there were many in the assembly who had not consecrated themselves;  therefore, the Levites were over the slaughter of the Passover lambs for everyone who was unclean, in order to consecrate them to the LORD.  For a multitude of the people, even many from Ephraim and Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun, had not purified themselves, yet they ate the Passover otherwise than prescribed.  For Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “May the good LORD pardon everyone who prepares his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though not according to the purification rules of the sanctuary.”  So the LORD heard Hezekiah and healed the people.” 2 Chronicles 30:13-20.

————

We may worry and feel anxiety for different reasons.

In today’s Scripture, the people did not prepare themselves according to the law for Passover.

Likewise, we may not have prepared ourselves for worship, Christian service, or our other work for God in the area of our livelihood or outside the area of our livelihood.

But, whatever our weakness, whatever the reason for our worry and anxiety, there is hope!

“How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!” Psalm 139:17.

“23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
24 And see if there be any hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way.” Psalm 139:23-24.

“O LORD, You have searched me and known me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
You understand my thought from afar.
3 You scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
4 Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O LORD, You know it all.
5 You have enclosed me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.” Psalm 139:1-5.

“In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness;  for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;  and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”  Romans 8:26-27.

“Who will bring a charge against God’s elect?  God is the one who justifies;  who is the one who condemns?  Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.”  Romans 8:33-34.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7.

“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:31-34.

“God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1.

“Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.” Psalm 55:22.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” John 14:26-27.

“22 The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Chronicles 30:1-12.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2030&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Now Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover to the LORD God of Israel.  …  The couriers went throughout all Israel and Judah with the letters from the hand of the king and his princes, even according to the command of the king, saying, “O sons of Israel, return to the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, that He may return to those of you who escaped and are left from the hand of the kings of Assyria.  Do not be like your fathers and your brothers, who were unfaithful to the LORD God of their fathers, so that He made them a horror, as you see.  Now do not stiffen your neck like your fathers, but yield to the LORD and enter His sanctuary which He has consecrated forever, and serve the LORD your God, that His burning anger may turn away from you.  For if you return to the LORD, your brothers and your sons will find compassion before those who led them captive and will return to this land.  For the LORD your God is gracious and compassionate, and will not turn His face away from you if you return to Him.”

So the couriers passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, and as far as Zebulun, but they laughed them to scorn and mocked them.  Nevertheless some men of Asher, Manasseh and Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem.  The hand of God was also on Judah to give them one heart to do what the king and the princes commanded by the word of the LORD.”   2 Chronicles 30:1 and 6-12.

————-

Other doctrine likes to look at what the hand of man is doing.

But, Reformed Doctrine eagerly searches the Scriptures to see what the hand of God is doing.

In today’s Scripture, we read:  “The hand of God was also on Judah to give them one heart to do what the king and the princes commanded by the word of the LORD.”  Verse 12.

This Scripture leads us to meditate on the hope that it presents to us.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10.

“for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”  Philippians 2:1-13.

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 1:6.

“9 “… For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;” Isaiah 46:9-10.

“‘O Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand;  for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as Yours?”  Deuteronomy 3:24.

“‘Ah Lord GOD!  Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm!  Nothing is too difficult for You,”  Jeremiah 32:17.

“For You, O LORD, have made me glad by what You have done,
I will sing for joy at the works of Your hands.” Psalm 92:4.

“Praise the LORD!
I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart,
In the company of the upright and in the assembly.
2 Great are the works of the LORD;
They are studied by all who delight in them.” Psalm 111:1-2.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Chronicles 29:12-36.  Here is a link to this Scripture – 2 Chronicles 29 NASB1995 – – Bible Gateway

I quote only the following verses.

“Then the Levites arose:  Mahath, the son of Amasai and Joel the son of Azariah, from the sons of the Kohathites;  and from the sons of Merari, Kish the son of Abdi and Azariah the son of Jehallelel;  and from the Gershonites, Joah the son of Zimmah and Eden the son of Joah;  and from the sons of Elizaphan, Shimri and Jeiel;  and from the sons of Asaph, Zechariah and Mattaniah;  and from the sons of Heman, Jehiel and Shimei;  and from the sons of Jeduthun, Shemaiah and Uzziel.  They assembled their brothers, consecrated themselves, and went in to cleanse the house of the LORD, according to the commandment of the king by the words of the LORD.  So the priests went in to the inner part of the house of the LORD to cleanse it, and every unclean thing which they found in the temple of the LORD they brought out to the court of the house of the LORD.  Then the Levites received it to carry out to the Kidron valley.  Now they began the consecration on the first day of the first month, and on the eighth day of the month they entered the porch of the LORD.  Then they consecrated the house of the LORD in eight days, and finished on the sixteenth day of the first month.  Then they went in to King Hezekiah and said, “We have cleansed the whole house of the LORD, the altar of burnt offering with all of its utensils, and the table of showbread with all of its utensils.  Moreover, all the utensils which King Ahaz had discarded during his reign in his unfaithfulness, we have prepared and consecrated;  and behold, they are before the altar of the LORD.”

Then King Hezekiah arose early and assembled the princes of the city and went up to the house of the LORD.  They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs and seven male goats for a sin offering for the kingdom, the sanctuary, and Judah.  And he ordered the priests, the sons of Aaron, to offer them on the altar of the LORD.  …

…  There were also many burnt offerings with the fat of the peace offerings and with the libations for the burnt offerings.  Thus the service of the house of the LORD was established again.  Then Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced over what God had prepared for the people, because the thing came about suddenly.”   2 Chronicles 29:12-21 and 35-36.

———-

Why does Scripture give such detail about the Levites?  There are three verses of their names along with the names of their fathers.

Verse 15 shows their unity and intention “to cleanse the house of the LORD, according to the commandment of the king by the words of the LORD.”

This is all the more amazing when we consider the context of the wickedness under the recent prior reign of King Ahaz.

So, in summary, the LORD not only raised King Hezekiah, but all these Levites to do this work!  Praise be to the LORD for His sovereign power and intention to raise up individuals all throughout history to accomplish His purpose when there seems to be no hope!

“Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of My pasture!” declares the LORD.  Therefore thus says the LORD God of Israel concerning the shepherds who are tending My people:  “You have scattered My flock and driven them away, and have not attended to them;  behold, I am about to attend to you for the evil of your deeds,” declares the LORD.  “Then I Myself will gather the remnant of My flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply.  I will also raise up shepherds over them and they will tend them;  and they will not be afraid any longer, nor be terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the LORD.

5 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD,
“When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch;
And He will reign as king and act wisely
And do justice and righteousness in the land.

6 “In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel will dwell securely;
And this is His name by which He will be called,
‘The LORD our righteousness.
’” Jeremiah 46:9-11.

“9 “Remember the former things long past,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure
’;
11 Calling a bird of prey from the east,
The man of My purpose from a far country.
Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned it, surely I will do it.
” Isaiah 46:9-11.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Chronicles 29:1-11.

“Hezekiah became king when he was twenty-five years old; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem.  And his mother’s name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.  He did right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father David had done.

In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he opened the doors of the house of the LORD and repaired them.  He brought in the priests and the Levites and gathered them into the square on the east.

Then he said to them, “Listen to me, O Levites.  Consecrate yourselves now, and consecrate the house of the LORD, the God of your fathers, and carry the uncleanness out from the holy place.  For our fathers have been unfaithful and have done evil in the sight of the LORD our God, and have forsaken Him and turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and have turned their backs.  They have also shut the doors of the porch and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense or offered burnt offerings in the holy place to the God of Israel.  Therefore the wrath of the LORD was against Judah and Jerusalem, and He has made them an object of terror, of horror, and of hissing, as you see with your own eyes.  For behold, our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this.  Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that His burning anger may turn away from us.  My sons, do not be negligent now, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to minister to Him, and to be His ministers and burn incense.”  2 Chronicles 29:1-11.

———-

There was the call by Hezekiah king of Judah to the Levites to consecrate themselves and to consecrate the house of the LORD and to carry the uncleanness out from the holy place.

What did Hezekiah say to the Levites to motivate them?

“My sons, do not be negligent now, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to minister to Him, and to be His ministers and burn incense.”  Verse 11.

Moses gave a similar motivation to Israel.

“But thus you shall do to them:  you shall tear down their altars, and smash their sacred pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire.  For you are a holy people to the LORD your God;  the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.”  Deuteronomy 7:5-6.

Other doctrine thinks election should be hidden or minimized.

But, Reformed Doctrine sees in Scripture how election can build our faith and encourage us to take action and work.

Consider now, for the LORD has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary;  be courageous and act.

“All this,” said David, “the LORD made me understand in writing by His hand upon me, all the details of this pattern.”

Then David said to his son Solomon, “Be strong and courageous, and act;  do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD God, my God, is with you.  He will not fail you nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of the LORD is finished.” 1 Chronicles 28:10 and 19-20.

“But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;  for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD;  you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.”  1 Peter 2:9-10.

“So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;  bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone;  just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.  Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.”  Colossians 3:12-14.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. …”  Ephesians 1:3-4.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”  Ephesians 2:10.

“for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”  Philippians 2:12-13.

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 1:6.

“but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.”  1 Corinthians 15:57-58.

Who is the LORD, our God?

“9 “Remember the former things long past,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure
’;
11 Calling a bird of prey from the east,
The man of My purpose from a far country.
Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned it, surely I will do it.
” Isaiah 46:9-11.

“The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.”

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Chronicles 28:16-27.

“At that time King Ahaz sent to the kings of Assyria for help.  For again the Edomites had come and attacked Judah and carried away captives.  The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the lowland and of the Negev of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, and Soco with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages, and they settled there.  For the LORD humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had brought about a lack of restraint in Judah and was very unfaithful to the LORD.  So Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came against him and afflicted him instead of strengthening him.  Although Ahaz took a portion out of the house of the LORD and out of the palace of the king and of the princes, and gave it to the king of Assyria, it did not help him.

Now in the time of his distress this same King Ahaz became yet more unfaithful to the LORD.  For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus which had defeated him, and said, “Because the gods of the kings of Aram helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.”  But they became the downfall of him and all Israel.  Moreover, when Ahaz gathered together the utensils of the house of God, he cut the utensils of the house of God in pieces;  and he closed the doors of the house of the LORD and made altars for himself in every corner of Jerusalem.  In every city of Judah he made high places to burn incense to other gods, and provoked the LORD, the God of his fathers, to anger.  Now the rest of his acts and all his ways, from first to last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.  So Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem, for they did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel;  and Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.”  2 Chronicles 28:16-27.

——–

Even in this Scripture where it seems like there is no hope, there is hope!

“…  Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.”  Verse 27.

Tomorrow, God willing, in the next devotion, we will cover what Hezekiah did in the next Scripture and the hope.  But, in today’s devotion, we will meditate on the hope that another Son brings to us.

“6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:6-7.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Chronicles 28:1-15.

“Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem;  and he did not do right in the sight of the LORD as David his father had done.  But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel; he also made molten images for the Baals.  Moreover, he burned incense in the valley of Ben-hinnom and burned his sons in fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had driven out before the sons of Israel.  He sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills and under every green tree.

Wherefore, the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Aram; and they defeated him and carried away from him a great number of captives and brought them to Damascus.  And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who inflicted him with heavy casualties.  For Pekah the son of Remaliah slew in Judah 120,000 in one day, all valiant men, because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers.  And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, slew Maaseiah the king’s son and Azrikam the ruler of the house and Elkanah the second to the king.

The sons of Israel carried away captive of their brethren 200,000 women, sons and daughters;  and they took also a great deal of spoil from them, and brought the spoil to Samaria.  But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was Oded;  and he went out to meet the army which came to Samaria and said to them, “Behold, because the LORD, the God of your fathers, was angry with Judah, He has delivered them into your hand, and you have slain them in a rage which has even reached heaven.  Now you are proposing to subjugate for yourselves the people of Judah and Jerusalem for male and female slaves.  Surely, do you not have transgressions of your own against the LORD your God?  Now therefore, listen to me and return the captives whom you captured from your brothers, for the burning anger of the LORD is against you.”  Then some of the heads of the sons of Ephraim—Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai—arose against those who were coming from the battle, and said to them, “You must not bring the captives in here, for you are proposing to bring upon us guilt against the LORD adding to our sins and our guilt;  for our guilt is great so that His burning anger is against Israel.”  So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the officers and all the assembly.  Then the men who were designated by name arose, took the captives, and they clothed all their naked ones from the spoil;  and they gave them clothes and sandals, fed them and gave them drink, anointed them with oil, led all their feeble ones on donkeys, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brothers;  then they returned to Samaria.”  2 Chronicles 28:1-15.

———–

We read of the sins of Ahaz king of Judah and the punishment of Judah through both Aram (occupying present day Syria and surrounding countries) and Israel.  But, the theme of today’s devotion is the action of Israel to their enemy Judah in verse 15 highlighted above.  It leads us to meditate on the following Scriptures.

“21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
22 For you will heap burning coals on his head,
And the LORD will reward you.” Proverbs 25:21-22.

“Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord.  “BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK;  FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD.”  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”  Romans 12:19-21.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven;  for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.  For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?  Do not even the tax collectors do the same?  If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others?  Do not even the Gentiles do the same?  Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”  Matthew 5:43-48.

Who can do these things?!

But, there is hope!

“The LORD will accomplish what concerns me;
Your lovingkindness, O LORD, is everlasting;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands.” Psalm 138:8.

So, let us go back to the “Therefore you are to be perfect” verse.  You will be perfect, because “your heavenly Father is perfect” and He will provide everything that you need to be perfect.  “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  … ”  Ephesians 1:3-4.

“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.” 2 Peter 1:2-3.

“After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.  To Him be dominion forever and ever.  Amen.”  1 Peter 5:10-11.

“For by one offering He (Christ) has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.”  Hebrews 10:14.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Chronicles chapter 27.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2027&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Jotham was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem.  And his mother’s name was Jerushah the daughter of Zadok.  He did right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah had done;  however he did not enter the temple of the LORD.  But the people continued acting corruptly.  He built the upper gate of the house of the LORD, and he built extensively the wall of Ophel.  Moreover, he built cities in the hill country of Judah, and he built fortresses and towers on the wooded hills.  He fought also with the king of the Ammonites and prevailed over them so that the Ammonites gave him during that year one hundred talents of silver, ten thousand kors of wheat and ten thousand of barley.  The Ammonites also paid him this amount in the second and in the third year.  So Jotham became mighty because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God.”  2 Chronicles 27:1-6.

———–

“In the morning, O LORD, You will hear my voice;
In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch.” Psalm 5:3.

“5 I wait for the LORD, my soul does wait,
And in His word do I hope.
6 My soul waits for the LORD
More than the watchmen for the morning;
Indeed, more than the watchmen for the morning.
7 O Israel, hope in the LORD;
For with the LORD there is lovingkindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
8 And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.” Psalm 130:5-8.

“6 When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches,
7 For You have been my help,
And in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.
8 My soul clings to You;
Your right hand upholds me.” Psalm 63:6-8.

“Jotham became mighty because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God.”  Today’s devotion will present some Scriptures upon which we can meditate on how we can order our way before the LORD our God.

“What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?  For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.  For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”  Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.  But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:”  Romans 4:1-6.

“Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?”  Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”  John 6:28-29.

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.  For by it the men of old gained approval.  …  And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”  Hebrews 11:1-2 and 6.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith;  and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9.

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”  Ephesians 2:4-7.

“Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.”

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”  1 Corinthians 1:30-31.

“For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.”  Hebrews 10:14.

“18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope for His lovingkindness
,
19 To deliver their soul from death
And to keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waits for the LORD;
He is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
22 Let Your lovingkindness, O LORD, be upon us,
According as we have hoped in You.” Psalm 33:18-22.

“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;  seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.  For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.”  2 Peter 1:2-4.

“Now these are the last words of David.

“Truly is not my house so with God?
For He has made an everlasting covenant with me,
Ordered in all things, and secured;
For all my salvation and all my desire
,
Will He not indeed make it grow?” 2 Samuel 23:1 and 5.

The LORD will accomplish what concerns me;
Your lovingkindness, O LORD, is everlasting; …” Psalm 138:8.

“For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes; therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us. Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.” 2 Corinthians 1:20-21.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1:3-5.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Chronicles chapter 26.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2026&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses

“And all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah.  He built Eloth and restored it to Judah after the king slept with his fathers.  Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Jechiliah of Jerusalem.  He did right in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father Amaziah had done.  He continued to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding through the vision of God;  and as long as he sought the LORD, God prospered him.

Now he went out and warred against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod;  and he built cities in the area of Ashdod and among the Philistines.  God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians who lived in Gur-baal, and the Meunites.  The Ammonites also gave tribute to Uzziah, and his fame extended to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong.  …

But when he became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and he was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.  Then Azariah the priest entered after him and with him eighty priests of the LORD, valiant men.  They opposed Uzziah the king and said to him, “It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron who are consecrated to burn incense.  Get out of the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful and will have no honor from the LORD God.”  But Uzziah, with a censer in his hand for burning incense, was enraged;  and while he was enraged with the priests, the leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, beside the altar of incense.  Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous on his forehead;  and they hurried him out of there, and he himself also hastened to get out because the LORD had smitten him.  King Uzziah was a leper to the day of his death;  and he lived in a separate house, being a leper, for he was cut off from the house of the LORD.  And Jotham his son was over the king’s house judging the people of the land.”  2 Chronicles 26:1-8 and 16-21.

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”  Proverbs 16:18.  King James Version.

“12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
And I find knowledge and discretion.
13 “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverted mouth, I hate.

14 “Counsel is mine and sound wisdom;
I am understanding, power is mine.
15 “By me kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.
And a haughty spirit before stumbling.” Proverbs 8:12-15.

“When pride comes, then comes dishonor,
But with the humble is wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2.

“A man’s pride will bring him low,
But a humble spirit will obtain honor.” Proverbs 29:23.

“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.”  1 Corinthians 10:12.

But, there is hope!

“The fear of the LORD is the instruction for wisdom,
And before honor comes humility.” Proverbs 15:33.

“The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD
Are riches, honor and life.” Proverbs 22:4.

“O LORD, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty;
Nor do I involve myself in great matters,
Or in things too difficult for me.
2 Surely I have composed and quieted my soul;
Like a weaned child rests against his mother,
My soul is like a weaned child within me.
3 O Israel, hope in the LORD
From this time forth and forever.” Psalm chapter 121.

“But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” James 4:6.

“No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man;  and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”  1 Corinthians 10:13.

“So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;  bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone;  just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.  Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.  Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body;  and be thankful.”  Colossians 3:12-15.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Chronicles 25:14-28.

Now after Amaziah came from slaughtering the Edomites, he brought the gods of the sons of Seir, set them up as his gods, bowed down before them and burned incense to them.  Then the anger of the LORD burned against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, “Why have you sought the gods of the people who have not delivered their own people from your hand?” As he was talking with him, the king said to him, “Have we appointed you a royal counselor?  Stop!  Why should you be struck down?”  Then the prophet stopped and said, “I know that God has planned to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”

Then Amaziah king of Judah took counsel and sent to Joash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us face each other.”  Joash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thorn bush which was in Lebanon sent to the cedar which was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’  But there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon and trampled the thorn bush.  You said, ‘Behold, you have defeated Edom.’  And your heart has become proud in boasting.  Now stay at home;  for why should you provoke trouble so that you, even you, would fall and Judah with you?

But Amaziah would not listen, for it was from God, that He might deliver them into the hand of Joash because they had sought the gods of Edom.  So Joash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth-shemesh, which belonged to Judah.  Judah was defeated by Israel, and they fled each to his tent.  Then Joash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate, 400 cubits.  He took all the gold and silver and all the utensils which were found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.

And Amaziah, the son of Joash king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel.  Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, from first to last, behold, are they not written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel?  From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the LORD they conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish;  but they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there.  Then they brought him on horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.”  2 Chronicles 25:14-28.

———

Amaziah committed idolatry which can be most plainly understood by bringing home the gods of the sons of Seir and setting them up as his gods, bowing down before them, and burning incense to them.

But, Amaziah also committed idolatry by becoming proud in himself to the extent that he provoked trouble by picking a fight with Israel.

In summary, Amaziah turned away from following the LORD.  And, we see how the LORD punished him.

We should not lightly dismiss this Scripture.  Rather, we should take care that we do not act like Amaziah.

“Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.  Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.”  1 Corinthians 10:11-12.

Consider the following from the Heidelberg Catechism.

Q. 95.  What is idolatry?

A.  Idolatry is, instead of, or besides that one true God, who has manifested himself in his word, to contrive, or have any other object, in which men place their trust.  Eph.5:5;  1 Chron.16:26;  Philip.3:19;  Gal.4:8;  Eph.2:12;  1 John 2:23;  2 John 1:9;  John 5:23.

Idols can be more than just silver and gold or other material objects made by man.  Idols can include ourselves or others whom we trust instead of God.

“5 Thus says the LORD,
“Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind
And makes flesh his strength,
And whose heart turns away from the LORD.
6 “For he will be like a bush in the desert
And will not see when prosperity comes,
But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness,
A land of salt without inhabitant.” Jeremiah 17:5-6.

“25 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;
He also is to be feared above all gods.
26 For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the LORD made the heavens.” 1 Chronicles 16:25-26.

“For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”  Ephesians 5:5.

You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.  You shall not worship them or serve them;  for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”  Exodus 20:4-5.

“You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him;  and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.”  Deuteronomy 13:4.

But, there is hope!

“No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man;  and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”  1 Corinthians 10:13-14.

“7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD
And whose trust is the LORD.
8 “For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream
And will not fear when the heat comes;
But its leaves will be green,
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith;  and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Chronicles 25:5-13.

“Moreover, Amaziah assembled Judah and appointed them according to their fathers’ households under commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds throughout Judah and Benjamin;  and he took a census of those from twenty years old and upward and found them to be 300,000 choice men, able to go to war and handle spear and shield.  He hired also 100,000 valiant warriors out of Israel for one hundred talents of silver.  But a man of God came to him saying, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel nor with any of the sons of Ephraim.  But if you do go, do it, be strong for the battle;  yet God will bring you down before the enemy, for God has power to help and to bring down.”  Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the troops of Israel?”  And the man of God answered, “The LORD has much more to give you than this.”  Then Amaziah dismissed them, the troops which came to him from Ephraim, to go home;  so their anger burned against Judah and they returned home in fierce anger.

Now Amaziah strengthened himself and led his people forth, and went to the Valley of Salt and struck down 10,000 of the sons of Seir.  The sons of Judah also captured 10,000 alive and brought them to the top of the cliff and threw them down from the top of the cliff, so that they were all dashed to pieces.  But the troops whom Amaziah sent back from going with him to battle, raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon, and struck down 3,000 of them and plundered much spoil.”  2 Chronicles 25:5-13.

———-

We may have questions.  But, we do not need to speculate.  Let us use two quotes from the man of God that we understand, that is supported by Scripture, and that we can use.

First, let us meditate on “God has power to help and to bring down.”  God is sovereign and rules over all.

“The LORD has established His throne in the heavens,
And His sovereignty rules over all.” Psalm 103:19.

“But our God is in the heavens;
He does whatever He pleases.” Psalm 115:3.

“God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1.

“‘Ah Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You,” Jeremiah 32:17.

“6 “The LORD kills and makes alive;
He brings down to Sheol and raises up.
7 “The LORD makes poor and rich;
He brings low, He also exalts.
8 “He raises the poor from the dust,
He lifts the needy from the ash heap
To make them sit with nobles,
And inherit a seat of honor;
For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S,
And He set the world on them.
9 “He keeps the feet of His godly ones,
But the wicked ones are silenced in darkness;
For not by might shall a man prevail.
10 “Those who contend with the LORD will be shattered;
Against them He will thunder in the heavens,
The LORD will judge the ends of the earth;
And He will give strength to His king,
And will exalt the horn of His anointed.” 1 Samuel 2:6-10.

Second, let us meditate on “The LORD has much more to give you than this.”  We may be fearful of obeying the LORD, thinking that if we do so, we will not have resources to do what we need to do.  But, the LORD has all the resources that we need.

“… For the world is Mine, and all it contains.” Psalm 50:12.

“11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
The LORD gives grace and glory;
No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts,
How blessed is the man who trusts in You!” Psalm 84:11-12.

“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?”  Romans 8:32.

“In the wilderness He fed you manna which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do good for you in the end.  Otherwise, you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’  But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.”  Deuteronomy 8:16-18.

“Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.  Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed;  as it is written,

“HE SCATTERED ABROAD, HE GAVE TO THE POOR,
HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS ENDURES FOREVER.”

Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness;  you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God.”  2 Corinthians 9:6-11.
