“For You, O LORD, have made me glad by what You have done”

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 29:1-9.

“Then King David said to the entire assembly, “My son Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, is still young and inexperienced and the work is great;  for the temple is not for man, but for the LORD God.  Now with all my ability I have provided for the house of my God the gold for the things of gold, and the silver for the things of silver, and the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood, onyx stones and inlaid stones, stones of antimony and stones of various colors, and all kinds of precious stones and alabaster in abundance.  Moreover, in my delight in the house of my God, the treasure I have of gold and silver, I give to the house of my God, over and above all that I have already provided for the holy temple, namely, 3,000 talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the buildings;  of gold for the things of gold and of silver for the things of silver, that is, for all the work done by the craftsmen.  Who then is willing to consecrate himself this day to the LORD?”

Then the rulers of the fathers’ households, and the princes of the tribes of Israel, and the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with the overseers over the king’s work, offered willingly;  and for the service for the house of God they gave 5,000 talents and 10,000 darics of gold, and 10,000 talents of silver, and 18,000 talents of brass, and 100,000 talents of iron.  Whoever possessed precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the LORD, in care of Jehiel the Gershonite.  Then the people rejoiced because they had offered so willingly, for they made their offering to the LORD with a whole heart, and King David also rejoiced greatly.”  1 Chronicles 29:1-9.

————-

It is a wonderful when we first truly believe even though we do not yet see proof, but then later see with our own eyes, that God has given us the will to do His will and that God has worked within us for His good pleasure.

We then rejoice, not because we offered so willingly out of our own alleged free-will and our own wisdom, but rather we rejoice because God has done it!

The first step is faith, and we realize that even faith is given to us as a gift of God.

Consider also the following from the Canons of Dordt in the section titled THIRD AND FOURTH HEADS OF DOCTRINE Of the Corruption of Man, His Conversion to God, and the Manner Thereof.

Article 14.  Faith is therefore to be considered as the gift of God, not on account of its being offered by God to man, to be accepted or rejected at his pleasure;  but because it is in reality conferred, breathed, and infused into him;  or even because God bestows the power or ability to believe, and then expects that man should by the exercise of his own free will, consent to the terms of that salvation, and actually believe in Christ;  but because he who works in man both to will and to do, and indeed all things in all, produces both the will to believe, and the act of believing also.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith;  and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9.

“For who regards you as superior?  What do you have that you did not receive?  And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?”  1 Corinthians 4:7.

We believe the following trio of verses, especially that God is at work in us, both giving us the will to do His will and that God also works within us for His good pleasure.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”  Ephesians 2:10.

“for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”  Philippians 2:12-13.

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 1:6.

Abraham hoped for descendants.  But, even though we hope for something different, namely something more general, that God works within us, it is that same faith that gives glory to God, being fully assured that what God had promised, He is able also to perform.

“In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “SO SHALL YOUR DESCENDANTS BE.”  Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb;  yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform.”  Romans 4:18-21.

So, during this first step of faith, even though we cannot yet see proof, we believe that God is able to give us the will to do His will and that God also works within us for His good pleasure.

“For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope;  for who hopes for what he already sees?  But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.”  Romans 8:24-25.

And then, we finally see what God promised us.

“Then the people rejoiced because they had offered so willingly, for they made their offering to the LORD with a whole heart, and King David also rejoiced greatly.”  Verse 9.

“For You, O LORD, have made me glad by what You have done,
I will sing for joy at the works of Your hands.” Psalm 92:4.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 28:11-21.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2028&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Then David gave to his son Solomon the plan of the porch of the temple, its buildings, its storehouses, its upper rooms, its inner rooms and the room for the mercy seat;  and the plan of all that he had in mind, for the courts of the house of the LORD, and for all the surrounding rooms, for the storehouses of the house of God and for the storehouses of the dedicated things;  also for the divisions of the priests and the Levites and for all the work of the service of the house of the LORD and for all the utensils of service in the house of the LORD;  for the golden utensils, the weight of gold for all utensils for every kind of service; for the silver utensils, the weight of silver for all utensils for every kind of service;  …

“All this,” said David, “the LORD made me understand in writing by His hand upon me, all the details of this pattern.”

Then David said to his son Solomon, “Be strong and courageous, and act;  do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD God, my God, is with you.  He will not fail you nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of the LORD is finished.  Now behold, there are the divisions of the priests and the Levites for all the service of the house of God, and every willing man of any skill will be with you in all the work for all kinds of service.  The officials also and all the people will be entirely at your command.”  1 Chronicles 28:11-14 and 19-21.

————-

All the details of the pattern for the house of the LORD were the LORD’S workmanship.  “All this,” said David, “the LORD made me understand in writing by His hand upon me, all the details of this pattern.”  Verse 19.

All the work that would be done by Solomon would be done through the LORD giving the will to Solomon to do it and through the LORD working for His good pleasure. “Then David said to his son Solomon, “Be strong and courageous, and act;  do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD God, my God, is with you.  …”  Verse 20.

All the work for the service of the house of the LORD would be completed by the LORD.  “…  He will not fail you nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of the LORD is finished.”  Verse 20.

The LORD will do likewise for us.  Consider the awesome work of the LORD!  To God be the glory!

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”  Ephesians 2:10.

“for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”  Philippians 2:12-13.

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 1:6.

Who is the LORD, our God?

“9 “Remember the former things long past,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure
’;
11 Calling a bird of prey from the east,
The man of My purpose from a far country.
Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned it, surely I will do it.
” Isaiah 46:9-11.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 28:9-10.

“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind;  for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts.  If you seek Him, He will let you find Him;  but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.  Consider now, for the LORD has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary;  be courageous and act.”  1 Chronicles 28:9-10.

————–

Today’s devotion will present some verses to consider for each of the three phrases in bold italic font highlight above.

Regarding “know the God of your father”, it is the beginning of wisdom, and we are exhorted to know LORD more than than to know ourself, and we are exhorted to boast in the LORD and in what He has done.  In sharp contrast, we are exhorted to not boast about ourself and in what we have done.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10.

“Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches;  but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth;  for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.”  Jeremiah 9:23-24.

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life;  it is these that testify about Me;  and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.”  John 5:39-40.

“At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” Matthew 11:25-27.

Regarding “serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind”, we are exhorted to let our heart be wholly devoted to the LORD and to serve him and to keep His commandments and to do our work for the LORD.

“Let your heart therefore be wholly devoted to the LORD our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as at this day.”  1 Kings 8:61.

“Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” Colossians 3:23-24.

But, there is hope!

“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you;  and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.  I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.”  Ezekiel 35:26-27.

“for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”  Philippians 2:13.

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 1:6.

Regarding “Consider now, for the LORD has chosen you”, God’s choice of us is the basis for our hope and the basis of our faith and the basis of God’s work for us and the basis for our work for God.

Consider the following from the Canons of Dordt that “election is the fountain of every saving good”.

“Article 9.  This election was not founded upon foreseen faith, and the obedience of faith, holiness, or any other good quality of disposition in man, as the pre-requisite, cause or condition on which it depended;  but men are chosen to faith and to the obedience of faith, holiness, etc., therefore election is the fountain of every saving good;  from which proceed faith, holiness, and the other gifts of salvation, and finally eternal life itself, as its fruits and effects, according to that of the apostle:  “He hath chosen us (not because we were) but that we should be holy, and without blame, before him in love,” Ephesians 1:4.”  This is from the section titled “FIRST HEAD OF DOCTRINE Of Divine Predestination”.

“But now listen, O Jacob, My servant,
And Israel, whom I have chosen:
2 Thus says the LORD who made you
And formed you from the womb, who will help you,
‘Do not fear, O Jacob My servant;
And you Jeshurun whom I have chosen.
3 ‘For I will pour out water on the thirsty land
And streams on the dry ground;
I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring
And My blessing on your descendants;
4 And they will spring up among the grass
Like poplars by streams of water.’
5 “This one will say, ‘I am the LORD’S’;
And that one will call on the name of Jacob;
And another will write on his hand, ‘Belonging to the LORD,’
And will name Israel’s name with honor.” Isaiah 44:1-5.

“For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;  but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God.  But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”  1 Corinthians 1:26-31.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us.  …”  Ephesians 1:3-6.

“For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;  and these whom He predestined, He also called;  and these whom He called, He also justified;  and these whom He justified, He also glorified.”  Romans 8:29-30.

“For He says to Moses, “I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION.”  So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.” Romans 9:15-16.

“Calling a bird of prey from the east,
The man of My purpose from a far country.
Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned it, surely I will do it.” Isaiah 46:11.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”  Ephesians 2:10.

“But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;  for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD;  you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.”  1 Peter 2:9-10.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 28:1-8. Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2028&version=NASB1995

“Now David assembled at Jerusalem all the officials of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the commanders of the divisions that served the king, and the commanders of thousands, and the commanders of hundreds, and the overseers of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, with the officials and the mighty men, even all the valiant men.  …  So now, in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of the LORD, and in the hearing of our God, observe and seek after all the commandments of the LORD your God so that you may possess the good land and bequeath it to your sons after you forever.”  1 Chronicles 28:1 and 8.

———–

We know that we should “observe and seek after all the commandments of the LORD your God”.  Moreover, there is a promise attached in today’s Scripture if we so do:  “so that you may possess the good land and bequeath it to your sons after you forever.”

“So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.”  Romans 7:12.

“But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.” 1 Timothy 1:8-11.

“then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,” 2 Peter 2:9.

“Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:19-20.

The problem is not the effect of the Law on the unrighteous as stated above. The problem is the effect of the Law on the righteous a/k/a those in Christ.

“But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind;  for apart from the Law sin is dead.  I was once alive apart from the Law;  but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died;  and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me;  for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.”  Romans 7:8-11.

It is important to understand that this Law includes the Ten Commandments. In the immediate preceding verse, we see that one of the Ten Commandments is used as a specific example. “What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “YOU SHALL NOT COVET.” Romans 7:7.

But, there is hope for those in Christ!

“Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.  For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.  But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.”  Romans 7:4-6.

“For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified;  for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation.”  Romans 4:14-15.

For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did:  sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”  Romans 8:2-4.

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.”  Romans 8:2.

“For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One (Christ) the many will be made righteous.  The Law came in so that the transgression would increase;  but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”  Romans 5:19-21.

“Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.  But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.  For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”  Galatians 3:24-26.

“For the Law was given through Moses;  grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.”  John 1:17.

“But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.  Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba!  Father!”  Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son;  and if a son, then an heir through God.”  Galatians 4:4-7.

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”  1 Corinthians 1:30-31.

“For by one offering He (Christ) has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.”  Hebrews 10:14.

“For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.  For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba!  Father!”  The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.  For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God.”  Romans 8:14-19.

“After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.  To Him be dominion forever and ever.  Amen.”  1 Peter 5:10-11.

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely;  and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.”  1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever.  Amen.”  Jude 1:24.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles chapter 27.  Here is a link to this chapter – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2027&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Now Azmaveth the son of Adiel had charge of the king’s storehouses.  And Jonathan the son of Uzziah had charge of the storehouses in the country, in the cities, in the villages and in the towers.  Ezri the son of Chelub had charge of the agricultural workers who tilled the soil.  Shimei the Ramathite had charge of the vineyards;  and Zabdi the Shiphmite had charge of the produce of the vineyards stored in the wine cellars.  Baal-hanan the Gederite had charge of the olive and sycamore trees in the Shephelah;  and Joash had charge of the stores of oil.  Shitrai the Sharonite had charge of the cattle which were grazing in Sharon;  and Shaphat the son of Adlai had charge of the cattle in the valleys.  Obil the Ishmaelite had charge of the camels;  and Jehdeiah the Meronothite had charge of the donkeys.  Jaziz the Hagrite had charge of the flocks.  All these were overseers of the property which belonged to King David.”  1 Chronicles 27:25-31.

———-

1 Chronicles chapter 27 covers the names of people who were in charge of divisions, tribes, areas of agriculture, and counseling.  As an example, I have quoted above only the Scripture on the names of people who were in charge of areas of agriculture.

We will meditate on what we need.

“Many a man proclaims his own loyalty,
But who can find a trustworthy man?” Proverbs 20:6.

“Do you see a man skilled in his work?
He will stand before kings;
He will not stand before obscure men.” Proverbs 22:29.

But, there is help!

“My son, if you will receive my words
And treasure my commandments within you,
2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom,
Incline your heart to understanding
;
3 For if you cry for discernment,
Lift your voice for understanding;
4 If you seek her as silver
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
5 Then you will discern the fear of the LORD
And discover the knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
8 Guarding the paths of justice,
And He preserves the way of His godly ones.
9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice
And equity and every good course.
” Proverbs 20:1-9.

“12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
And I find knowledge and discretion.
13 “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverted mouth, I hate.
14 “Counsel is mine and sound wisdom;
I am understanding, power is mine.
15 “By me (wisdom) kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.

16 “By me (wisdom) princes rule, and nobles,
All who judge rightly.

17 “I love those who love me;
And those who diligently seek me will find me.
18 “Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring wealth and righteousness.
19 “My fruit is better than gold, even pure gold,
And my yield better than choicest silver.
20 “I walk in the way of righteousness,
In the midst of the paths of justice,
21 To endow those who love me with wealth,
That I may fill their treasuries.” Proverbs 8:12-21.

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, …” 1 Corinthians 1:30.

“…  But we have the mind of Christ.”  1 Corinthians 2:16.

“… Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:2-3.

“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.” James 3:17.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 26:20-32.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2026&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following two verses.

The Levites, their relatives, had charge of the treasures of the house of God and of the treasures of the dedicated gifts.  The sons of Ladan, the sons of the Gershonites belonging to Ladan, namely, the Jehielites, were the heads of the fathers’ households, belonging to Ladan the Gershonite.”  1 Chronicles 26:20-21.

—————

“The Levites, their relatives, had charge of the treasures of the house of God and of the treasures of the dedicated gifts.”  Verse 20.

What treasures have been entrusted to you?

“Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.”  2 Timothy 1:14.

Do you hear good Reformed preaching and teaching?

If so, “Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me (and others), in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.”  2 Timothy 1:13.

But, there are those who are “always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”  2 Timothy 3:7.

Scripture also sternly warns us!

“For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES.  Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.  How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?  For we know Him who said: “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY.”  And again, THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE.”  It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”  Hebrews 10:26-31.

“For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God;  but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.”  Hebrews 6:4-8.

But, there is hope!

“But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.  For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints.  And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.”  And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.”  Hebrews 6:9-15.

“In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.  This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”  Hebrews 6:17-20.

Other doctrine clings to their own will and their own works.

But, Reformed Doctrine clings to God’s will and God’s works a/k/a the promises of God.

Reformed Doctrine accurately summarizes Scripture and teaches that salvation is a work of God alone, by grace alone, and that God provides all the points of salvation from beginning to end:  from the beginning of “Unconditional Election” through “Limited Atonement” through “Irresistible Grace” to the end of “Preservation of the Saints”, the “U”, “L”, “I”, and “P” of “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism, the Reformed Doctrine of Salvation.  This true doctrine of salvation is more fully taught in the Reformed creed Canons of Dordt.

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”  1 Corinthians 1:30-31.

“seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.  For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.”  2 Peter 1:3-4.

“What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?  For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.  For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”  Romans 4:1-3.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith;  and that not of yourselves (that is, not even faith is of ourselves), it is the gift of God;  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9.

“Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?”  Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”  John 6:28-29.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 26:1-19. Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2026&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“For the divisions of the gatekeepers there were of the Korahites, Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph.  Meshelemiah had sons:  Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth, Elam the fifth, Johanan the sixth, Eliehoenai the seventh.  Obed-edom had sons:  Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sacar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth, Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh and Peullethai the eighth;  God had indeed blessed him.  Also to his son Shemaiah sons were born who ruled over the house of their father, for they were mighty men of valor.  The sons of Shemaiah were Othni, Rephael, Obed and Elzabad, whose brothers, Elihu and Semachiah, were valiant men.  All these were of the sons of Obed-edom;  they and their sons and their relatives were able men with strength for the service, from Obed-edom.  Meshelemiah had sons and relatives, valiant men.  Also Hosah, one of the sons of Merari had sons:  Shimri the first (although he was not the firstborn, his father made him first), Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth;  all the sons and relatives of Hosah were 13.”  1 Chronicles 26:1-11.

————

We will meditate on highlighted statement above about Obed-edom:   “God had indeed blessed him.”  We will first look at the context for the blessing as shown in the Scripture below.

“And David was unwilling to move the ark of the LORD into the city of David with him;  but David took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.  Thus the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and all his household.”  2 Samuel 6:10-11.

There was no explanation for the blessing on Obed-edom other than the statement:  “the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months”. Nothing was said about Obed-edom taking good care of the ark or any other action by him that motivated the LORD to bless him.

The LORD draws near to some and blesses them for His own reason.

Most importantly, we see this for salvation.  Consider the following from the Canons of Dordt in the section titled FIRST HEAD OF DOCTRINE Of Divine Predestination.

Article 7.  Election is the unchangeable purpose of God, whereby, before the foundation of the world, he hath out of mere grace, according to the sovereign good pleasure of his own will, chosen, from the whole human race, which had fallen through their own fault, from their primitive state of rectitude, into sin and destruction, a certain number of persons to redemption in Christ, whom he from eternity appointed the Mediator and Head of the elect, and the foundation of Salvation.

This elect number, though by nature neither better nor more deserving than the others, but with them involved in one common misery, God hath decreed to give to Christ, to be saved by him, and effectually to call and draw them to his communion by his Word and Spirit, to bestow upon them true faith, justification and sanctification;  and having powerfully preserved them in the fellowship of his Son, finally, to glorify them for the demonstration of his mercy, and for the praise of his glorious grace;  …

Article 9.  This election was not founded upon foreseen faith, and the obedience of faith, holiness, or any other good quality of disposition in man, as the pre-requisite, cause or condition on which it depended;  but men are chosen to faith and to the obedience of faith, holiness, etc., therefore election is the fountain of every saving good;  from which proceed faith, holiness, and the other gifts of salvation, and finally eternal life itself, as its fruits and effects, according to that of the apostle:  “He hath chosen us (not because we were) but that we should be holy, and without blame, before him in love,” Ephesians 1:4.

“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?”  Romans 8:32.

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”  Romans 8:28.

“Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”  Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?”  Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”  John 6:27-29.

“Unless the LORD builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the LORD guards the city,
The watchman keeps awake in vain.
2 It is vain for you to rise up early,
To retire late,
To eat the bread of painful labors;
For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.

3 Behold, children are a gift of the LORD,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
5 How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;
They will not be ashamed
When they speak with their enemies in the gate.” Psalm chapter 127.

“How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered!
2 How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity,
And in whose spirit there is no deceit!” Psalm 32:1-2.

“How blessed are those who keep justice,
Who practice righteousness at all times!” Psalm 106:3.

“How blessed is the one whom You choose and bring near to You
To dwell in Your courts.
We will be satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
Your holy temple.” Psalm 26:4.

“Praise the LORD!
How blessed is the man who fears the LORD,
Who greatly delights in His commandments.
2 His descendants will be mighty on earth;
The generation of the upright will be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches are in his house,
And his righteousness endures forever.
4 Light arises in the darkness for the upright;
He is gracious and compassionate and righteous.” Psalm 112:1-4.

“How blessed are those whose way is blameless,
Who walk in the law of the LORD.
2 How blessed are those who observe His testimonies,
Who seek Him with all their heart.
3 They also do no unrighteousness;
They walk in His ways.” Psalm 119:1-3.

“12 Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For He has strengthened the bars of your gates;
He has blessed your sons within you.
14 He makes peace in your borders;
He satisfies you with the finest of the wheat.” Psalm 147:12-14.

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.” Psalm 33:12.

“11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
The LORD gives grace and glory;
No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts,
How blessed is the man who trusts in You!” Psalm 84:11-12.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles chapter 25.  Here is a link to this chapter – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2025&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Moreover, David and the commanders of the army set apart for the service some of the sons of Asaph and of Heman and of Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with lyres, harps and cymbals;  and the number of those who performed their service was:  Of the sons of Asaph:  Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asharelah;  the sons of Asaph were under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied under the direction of the king.  Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun:  Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six, under the direction of their father Jeduthun with the harp, who prophesied in giving thanks and praising the LORD.  Of Heman, the sons of Heman:  Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, Mahazioth.  All these were the sons of Heman the king’s seer to exalt him according to the words of God, for God gave fourteen sons and three daughters to Heman.  All these were under the direction of their father to sing in the house of the LORD, with cymbals, harps and lyres, for the service of the house of God.  Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the direction of the king.  Their number who were trained in singing to the LORD, with their relatives, all who were skillful, was 288.”  1 Chronicles 25:1-7.

“Praise the LORD!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty expanse.
2 Praise Him for His mighty deeds;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness.

3 Praise Him with trumpet sound;
Praise Him with harp and lyre.
4 Praise Him with timbrel and dancing;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe.
5 Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with resounding cymbals.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD!” Psalm chapter 150.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles chapter 24.  Here is a link to this chapter – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2024&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Now the divisions of the descendants of Aaron were these:  the sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.  But Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no sons.  So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.  David, with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to their offices for their ministry.  Since more chief men were found from the descendants of Eleazar than the descendants of Ithamar, they divided them thus:  there were sixteen heads of fathers’ households of the descendants of Eleazar and eight of the descendants of Ithamar, according to their fathers’ households.  Thus they were divided by lot, the one as the other;  for they were officers of the sanctuary and officers of God, both from the descendants of Eleazar and the descendants of Ithamar.  Shemaiah, the son of Nethanel the scribe, from the Levites, recorded them in the presence of the king, the princes, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the priests and of the Levites;  one father’s household taken for Eleazar and one taken for Ithamar.”  1 Chronicles 24:1-6.

———–

David divided (and placed) the priests according to their offices for their ministry.  Today’s Scripture leads us to meditate on the division and placement of Christians around the world.

“But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.”  1 Corinthians 12:18.

Some Christians stay all their life in the same church or at least same metropolitan where there are good options for churches with the same doctrine. But, there are other Christians who move to an area where there are no or very few options for a church with the same doctrine.

Some of these Christians who did move (to an area where there are no or very few options for a church with the same doctrine) will either move back to their home or will move to another area where there are good options for churches will the same doctrine. And, it is easier to understand that move. Most often, that should be our goal.

But sometimes, God will lead Christians to stay, or even move, to areas where there are no or very few options for a church with the same doctrine. As one example, there are missionaries.  But, there are also other reasons why God has placed them there.

Too often, we only view ourselves in one church or another church.  But, God views us “in Christ” in the one true invisible church.  According to God’s will, God places us in the body of Christ (the one true invisible church) exactly were He wants to do so. “But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.”  1 Corinthians 12:18.

Here are some examples of division for success.

A military force does not always stay altogether in one group, but sometimes, it is divided.

With division into two or more forces, it can better attack the enemy from different positions.  With division into two or more forces, it can also spread out and preserve life by preventing the whole military force from being destroyed if there is a concentrated attack on all of them in one area.

“When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he led out his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.  He divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus.”  Genesis 14:14-15.

“The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and furthermore he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”  Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed;  and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and the herds and the camels, into two companies;  for he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the company which is left will escape.”  Genesis 32:6-8.

Consider how we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

Salt is liberally sprinkled here and there in order to penetrate and preserve and give flavor.  Salt does not stay in the salt container.  Likewise, Christians are spread out.

“You are the salt of the earth;  but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.”  Matthew 5:13.

We move a candle or flashlight to areas which are dark in order to bring light to the darkness.  Light does not stay under the basket or in one room, so the light may go far and wide and penetrate darkness.  Likewise, Christians are spread out.

“You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;  nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.  Matthew 5:14-16.

Peter mostly stayed in Jerusalem.  But, Paul traveled extensively in his missionary trips to the Gentiles.  We certainly understand the value of this division and placement by God.

“… I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised (for He who effectually worked for Peter in his apostleship to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles),”  Galatians 2:7-8.

In conclusion, we can and should trust God to guide us.

“8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go;
I will counsel you with My eye upon you.
9 Do not be as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding,
Whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check,
Otherwise they will not come near to you.
10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
But he who trusts in the LORD, lovingkindness shall surround him.
11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous ones;
And shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.” Psalm 32:8-11.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles chapter 23.  Here is a link to this chapter – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2023&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“These were the sons of Levi according to their fathers’ households, even the heads of the fathers’ households of those of them who were counted, in the number of names by their census, doing the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from twenty years old and upward.  For David said, “The LORD God of Israel has given rest to His people, and He dwells in Jerusalem forever.  Also, the Levites will no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its utensils for its service.”  For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered from twenty years old and upward.  For their office is to assist the sons of Aaron with the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts and in the chambers and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of the house of God, and with the showbread, and the fine flour for a grain offering, and unleavened wafers, or what is baked in the pan or what is well-mixed, and all measures of volume and size.  They are to stand every morning to thank and to praise the LORD, and likewise at evening, and to offer all burnt offerings to the LORD, on the sabbaths, the new moons and the fixed festivals in the number set by the ordinance concerning them, continually before the LORD.  Thus they are to keep charge of the tent of meeting, and charge of the holy place, and charge of the sons of Aaron their relatives, for the service of the house of the LORD.”  1 Chronicles 23:24-32.

————

Too often, we hear from preachers and teachers and the congregation what they are going to do.  Too infrequently, we hear what the LORD has done.

“The Rock! His work is perfect,
For all His ways are just;
A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and upright is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4.

But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”  1 Corinthians 1:30-31.

“For You, O LORD, have made me glad by what You have done,
I will sing for joy at the works of Your hands.” Psalm 92:4.

“Praise the LORD!
I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart,
In the company of the upright and in the assembly.
2 Great are the works of the LORD;
They are studied by all who delight in them.

3 Splendid and majestic is His work,
And His righteousness endures forever.
4 He has made His wonders to be remembered;
The LORD is gracious and compassionate.” Psalm 111:1-4.

“7 The works of His hands are truth and justice;
All His precepts are sure.
8 They are upheld forever and ever;
They are performed in truth and uprightness.
9 He has sent redemption to His people;
He has ordained His covenant forever
;
Holy and awesome is His name.” Psalm 111:7-9.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10.
