Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 16:8-13.

“8 Oh give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples.
9 Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;
Speak of all His wonders.
10 Glory in His holy name;
Let the heart of those who seek the LORD be glad.
11 Seek the LORD and His strength;
Seek His face continually.
12 Remember His wonderful deeds which He has done,
His marvels and the judgments from His mouth,
13 O seed of Israel His servant,
Sons of Jacob, His chosen ones!” 1 Chronicles 16:8-13.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
3 Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
4 Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
5 Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.” Psalm 103:1-5.

“16 And He saw that there was no man,
And was astonished that there was no one to intercede;
Then His own arm brought salvation to Him,
And His righteousness upheld Him.
17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate,
And a helmet of salvation on His head;
And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing
And wrapped Himself with zeal as a mantle.” Isaiah 59:16-17.

“9 Break forth, shout joyfully together,
You waste places of Jerusalem;
For the LORD has comforted His people,
He has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 The LORD has bared His holy arm
In the sight of all the nations,
That all the ends of the earth may see
The salvation of our God.
” Isaiah 52:9-10.

For You, O LORD, have made me glad by what You have done,
I will sing for joy at the works of Your hands.
” Psalm 92:4.

“Praise the LORD!
I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart,
In the company of the upright and in the assembly.
2 Great are the works of the LORD;
They are studied by all who delight in them.

3 Splendid and majestic is His work,
And His righteousness endures forever.
4 He has made His wonders to be remembered;
The LORD is gracious and compassionate.

5 He has given food to those who fear Him;
He will remember His covenant forever.
6 He has made known to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the heritage of the nations
.” Psalm 111:1-6.

“After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands;  and they cry out with a loud voice, saying,

Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”  And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying,

“Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever.  Amen.”  Revelation 7:9-11.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 16:1-7.

“And they brought in the ark of God and placed it inside the tent which David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God.  When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD.  He distributed to everyone of Israel, both man and woman, to everyone a loaf of bread and a portion of meat and a raisin cake.

He appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the LORD, even to celebrate and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel:  Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom and Jeiel, with musical instruments, harps, lyres;  also Asaph played loud-sounding cymbals, and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests blew trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.

Then on that day David first assigned Asaph and his relatives to give thanks to the LORD.”  1 Chronicles 16:1-7.

“Oh give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples.” 1 Chronicles 16:8.

“O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.” 1 Chronicles 16:34.

“It is good to give thanks to the LORD
And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
2 To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning
And Your faithfulness by night,
3 With the ten-stringed lute and with the harp,
With resounding music upon the lyre.
4 For You, O LORD, have made me glad by what You have done,
I will sing for joy at the works of Your hands.” Psalm 92:1-4.

I quote only the following verses.

“Then David spoke to the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their relatives the singers, with instruments of music, harps, lyres, loud-sounding cymbals, to raise sounds of joy.  …

So it was David, with the elders of Israel and the captains over thousands, who went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-edom with joy.  Because God was helping the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.  Now David was clothed with a robe of fine linen with all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers and Chenaniah the leader of the singing with the singers.  David also wore an ephod of linen.  Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, and with sound of the horn, with trumpets, with loud-sounding cymbals, with harps and lyres.

It happened when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and celebrating;  and she despised him in her heart.”  1 Chronicles 15:16 and 25-29.

24 Tell of His glory among the nations,
His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.
25 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;

Ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
29 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name;

31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
And let them say among the nations, “The LORD reigns.” 1 Chronicles 16:23-31.

“34 O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
35 Then say, “Save us, O God of our salvation,
And gather us and deliver us from the nations,
To give thanks to Your holy name,

I quote only the following verses.

“Now David built houses for himself in the city of David;  and he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it.  Then David said, “No one is to carry the ark of God but the Levites;  for the LORD chose them to carry the ark of God and to minister to Him forever.”  And David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to its place which he had prepared for it.  David gathered together the sons of Aaron and the Levites:  …

Then David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab,  and said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers’ households of the Levites;  consecrate yourselves both you and your relatives, that you may bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel to the place that I have prepared for it.  Because you did not carry it at the first, the LORD our God made an outburst on us, for we did not seek Him according to the ordinance.”  So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel.  The sons of the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles thereon, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the LORD.”  1 Chronicles 15:1-4 and 11-15.

The denomination Protestant Reformed Churches of America (PRCA) has preached and practiced the worship of the LORD  “according to the word of the LORD.”  Here is a link to an article “Public Worship and the Reformed Faith” by Professor Barrett L. Gritters of PRCA followed by two quotes from it – http://www.prca.org/resources/publications/pamphlets/item/598-public-worship-and-the-reformed-faith

“The Regulative Principle

Reformed believers teach that our worship is to be just what God commands it to be—nothing more, nothing less. This is of utmost importance for us to understand in connection with Biblical, Reformed worship. God does not leave it up to us to determine the manner of our worship of God. God’s Word regulates us in how we must worship Him.

This is the difference between the Lutheran and the Calvinistic branches of the Reformation. Followers of Luther, when reforming the extravagance of the Roman Catholic Church, held to the position that whatever was not explicitly forbidden in the Bible was permissible in church. For that reason, the Lutherans kept a good deal of Roman Catholic practices in their worship. Whether consciously taken or not, this is the position of most churches today. This is not Reformed!

The Calvinists, on the other hand, held to what is called ‘The Regulative Principle of Worship.’ That regulative principle says, ‘We worship God only as He has commanded us in His Word.’ For that reason, the worship services of Reformed churches historically have been limited to prayer, singing, sacraments, preaching, and offerings.

One can easily see how this principle speaks to the modern changes in the worship services. Trying sincerely to be up to date, or trying sincerely to attract the young people to the church, the old is pushed aside, replaced by new kinds of worship. Often one of the services is reserved for something other than preaching. The questions that are most often asked are, ‘What will please the congregation? What will be more stimulating? What is nice?’ But the question rarely is, ‘What does God’s Word say about it?’

People are under the delusion that as long as they are not doing something that is condemned in the Bible, as long as they are guided by proper motivations, as long as they are worshipping the true God, there is no limit as to what they may do. But they forget that God does not leave it up to us to decide how we are to worship Him. We are REGULATED BY THE WORD OF GOD in our worship. We must be so careful in the manner of our worship.”

“True to this regulative principle, Reformed worship services have these elements: singing of Psalms (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19-20); offering of prayer (I Timothy 2:1-8); reading of Scriptures (I Thessalonians 5:27; I Timothy 4:13); the preaching and hearing of God’s word (Romans 10:13-17; II Timothy 4:1-2); the administration of the two sacraments (Matthew 28:19-20; I Corinthians 11:23-29); and the giving of our offerings in the support of the ministry and the relief of the poor (I Corinthians 16:1-2; I Corinthians 9:11-14).”

——-

In my (Bill’s) conclusion, in today’s Scripture, David was rightly fearful of the LORD and careful of how the ark of God was to be carried because of what happened to Uzza.  “Because you did not carry it at the first, the LORD our God made an outburst on us, for we did not seek Him according to the ordinance.” Verse 13. We also remember prior Scripture.  “David was afraid of God that day, saying, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?”  So David did not take the ark with him to the city of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.”  1 Chronicles 13:12-13.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10.

“11 Worship the LORD with reverence
And rejoice with trembling.
12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,
For His wrath may soon be kindled.
How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!” Psalm 2:11-12.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles chapter 14.

“Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, masons and carpenters, to build a house for him.  And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted, for the sake of His people Israel.

Then David took more wives at Jerusalem, and David became the father of more sons and daughters.  These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem:  Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,  Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet.

“When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up in search of David;  and David heard of it and went out against them.  Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the valley of Rephaim.  David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines?  And will You give them into my hand?”  Then the LORD said to him, “Go up, for I will give them into your hand.”  So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there;  and David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like the breakthrough of waters.”  Therefore they named that place Baal-perazim.  They abandoned their gods there;  so David gave the order and they were burned with fire.

The Philistines made yet another raid in the valley.  David inquired again of God, and God said to him, “You shall not go up after them;  circle around behind them and come at them in front of the balsam trees.  It shall be when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you shall go out to battle, for God will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.”  David did just as God had commanded him, and they struck down the army of the Philistines from Gibeon even as far as Gezer.  Then the fame of David went out into all the lands;  and the LORD brought the fear of him on all the nations.”  1 Chronicles chapter 14.

“11 “Who is like You among the gods, O LORD?
Who is like You, majestic in holiness,
Awesome in praises, working wonders?

12 “You stretched out Your right hand,
The earth swallowed them.
13 “In Your lovingkindness You have led the people whom You have redeemed;
In Your strength You have guided them to Your holy habitation.

14 “The peoples have heard, they tremble;
Anguish has gripped the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 “Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed;
The leaders of Moab, trembling grips them;
All the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.
16 “Terror and dread fall upon them;
By the greatness of Your arm they are motionless as stone;
Until Your people pass over, O LORD,
Until the people pass over whom You have purchased.

17 “You will bring them and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance,
The place, O LORD, which You have made for Your dwelling,
The sanctuary, O LORD, which Your hands have established.

“Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God?”

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles chapter 13.

“Then David consulted with the captains of the thousands and the hundreds, even with every leader.  David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if it is from the LORD our God, let us send everywhere to our kinsmen who remain in all the land of Israel, also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their cities with pasture lands, that they may meet with us;  and let us bring back the ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul.”  Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.

So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor of Egypt even to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.  David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, the LORD who is enthroned above the cherubim, where His name is called.  They carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.  David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, even with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals and with trumpets.

When they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, because the oxen nearly upset it.  The anger of the LORD burned against Uzza, so He struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark;  and he died there before God.  Then David became angry because of the LORD’S outburst against Uzza;  and he called that place Perez-uzza to this day.  David was afraid of God that day, saying, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?”  So David did not take the ark with him to the city of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.  Thus the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months;  and the LORD blessed the family of Obed-edom with all that he had.”  1 Chronicles chapter 13.

————–

Here is a brief summary of where the ark of God was previously.

The Philistines captured the ark of God in a victory over Israel.  “Now the hand of the LORD was heavy on the Ashdodites, and He ravaged them and smote them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territories.  When the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for His hand is severe on us and on Dagon our god.”  1 Samuel 4:6-7.

“Now the ark of the LORD had been in the country of the Philistines seven months.”  1 Samuel 6:1.

“He struck down some of the men of Beth-shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the LORD.  He struck down of all the people, 50,070 men, and the people mourned because the LORD had struck the people with a great slaughter.  The men of Beth-shemesh said, “Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God?  And to whom shall He go up from us?”  So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have brought back the ark of the LORD;  come down and take it up to you.”  1 Samuel 6:19-21.

“And the men of Kiriath-jearim came and took the ark of the LORD and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, and consecrated Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.  From the day that the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim, the time was long, for it was twenty years;  and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.”  1 Samuel 7:1-2.

The purpose of this summary is to show that this “outburst against Uzza” was not isolated.  The LORD “struck down some of the men of Beth-shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the LORD.” The men of Beth-shemesh exclaimed, “Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God?”

Even “David was afraid of God that day, saying, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?”

We are only able to stand before “the LORD, this holy God” by the grace of this LORD.

Nothing is mentioned in today’s Scripture that Obed-edom was a godly man.  Nothing was mentioned about Obed-edom taking good care of the ark of God.  We can infer from today’s Scripture that David informed Obed-edom about what happened to Uzza for “only” touching the ark of God and that after David arranged the careful placement of the ark of God within the home of Obed-edom, it is possible that David warned Obed-edom:  “Whatever you do, do not touch the ark of God!”  And yet, Obed-edom the Gittite received such grace, “and the LORD blessed the family of Obed-edom with all that he had.”

And, there is hope for us too!

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”  Ephesians 2:4-7.

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”  1 Corinthians 1:30-31.

“But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.” Galatians 4:4-7.

“For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” Romans 8:15.

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely;  and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.”  1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever.  Amen.”  Jude 1:24.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 12:23-40.  Here is a link to this Scripture – 1 Chronicles 12 NASB1995 – – Bible Gateway

I quote only the following verses.

Now these are the numbers of the divisions equipped for war, who came to David at Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD.  The sons of Judah who bore shield and spear were 6,800, equipped for war.  Of the sons of Simeon, mighty men of valor for war, 7,100.  Of the sons of Levi 4,600.  …  Of the half-tribe of Manasseh 18,000, who were designated by name to come and make David king.  Of the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do, their chiefs were two hundred;  and all their kinsmen were at their command.  Of Zebulun, there were 50,000 who went out in the army, who could draw up in battle formation with all kinds of weapons of war and helped David with an undivided heart.  …

All these, being men of war who could draw up in battle formation, came to Hebron with a perfect heart to make David king over all Israel;  and all the rest also of Israel were of one mind to make David king.  They were there with David three days, eating and drinking, for their kinsmen had prepared for them.  Moreover those who were near to them, even as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought food on donkeys, camels, mules and on oxen, great quantities of flour cakes, fig cakes and bunches of raisins, wine, oil, oxen and sheep.  There was joy indeed in Israel.”  1 Chronicles 12:23-2 and 31-33 and 38-40.

——————–

Today’s Scripture provides hope to us that the LORD will also makes us of one mind and also give us a perfect heart to obey and support our King, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, so that we will be a joyful people for His own possession in His kingdom, zealous for good deeds.

“The LORD says to my Lord:
“Sit at My right hand
Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
2 The LORD will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,
“Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”
3 Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power;
In holy array, from the womb of the dawn,
Your youth are to You as the dew.
” Psalm 110:1-3.

“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you;  and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.  I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.  You will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers;  so you will be My people, and I will be your God.”  Ezekiel 36:26-28.

“For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”  Colossians 1:13-14.

“For the grace of God has appeared, … looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.”  Titus 2:11-14.

“15 How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound!
O LORD, they walk in the light of Your countenance.
16 In Your name they rejoice all the day,
And by Your righteousness they are exalted.” Psalm 89:15-16.

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,  to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever.  Amen.”  Jude 1:24-25.

“And the Lord was adding to their number day by day …”

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 12:19-22.

“From Manasseh also some defected to David when he was about to go to battle with the Philistines against Saul.  But they did not help them, for the lords of the Philistines after consultation sent him away, saying, “At the cost of our heads he may defect to his master Saul.”  As he went to Ziklag there defected to him from Manasseh: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai, captains of thousands who belonged to Manasseh.  They helped David against the band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor, and were captains in the army.  For day by day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army like the army of God.”  1 Chronicles 12:19-22.

————

We may like to think of ourselves as independent and that we do not need anyone else.  But even though David slew Goliath by himself, we have seen in the last two chapters that God brought to David mighty men of valor to help David.  So, we should not be resistant to God bringing us people to help us and to accomplish God’s purpose.

We also have seen in the last two chapters, especially in today’s Scripture as highlighted above, that “day by day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army like the army of God.”  So, we should not get discouraged if it takes time for us to get the total amount of support that we need.

Most generally, the Lord added to His church “day by day”. “Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people.  And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.”  Acts 2:46-47.

More specifically, today’s Scripture provides two hopes.  First, God give us favor with the people (to some extent) to accomplish His purpose.  Second, God provides the type of people that we need.

Consider the following supporting Scriptures.

“3 Do not let kindness and truth leave you;
Bind them around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 So you will find favor and good repute
In the sight of God and man.” Proverbs 3:3-4.

“For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O LORD,
You surround him with favor as with a shield.” Psalm 5:12.

“And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”  Luke 2:52.

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.  And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.  There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.  But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.  For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;  to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.  But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.”  1 Corinthians 12:4-11.

“Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.  And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.”  1 Corinthians 12:27-28.

“And He (Christ) gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;  until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.”  Ephesians 4:11-13.

“Indeed, your God helps you!”

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 12:16-18.

“Then some of the sons of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David.  David went out to meet them, and said to them, “If you come peacefully to me to help me, my heart shall be united with you;  but if to betray me to my adversaries, since there is no wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers look on it and decide.”  Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, who was the chief of the thirty, and he said,

“We are yours, O David,
And with you, O son of Jesse!
Peace, peace to you,
And peace to him who helps you;
Indeed, your God helps you!

Then David received them and made them captains of the band.”  1 Chronicles 12:16-18.

———-

The message given to David by Amasai when the Spirit came upon him, “Indeed, your God helps you!”, does not only apply to David, but it applies to all the elect.

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,” 1 Corinthians 1:30.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us. Ephesians 1:3-8.

“For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;  and these whom He predestined, He also called;  and these whom He called, He also justified;  and these whom He justified, He also glorified.”  Romans 8:29-30.

“6 For the LORD gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
8 Guarding the paths of justice,
And He preserves the way of His godly ones.
9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice
And equity and every good course.” Proverbs 2:10-12.

“10 Hate evil, you who love the LORD,
Who preserves the souls of His godly ones;
He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown like seed for the righteous
And gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Be glad in the LORD, you righteous ones,
And give thanks to His holy name.” Psalm 97:10-12.

“39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD;
He is their strength in time of trouble.
40 The LORD helps them and delivers them;
He delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
Because they take refuge in Him.” Psalm 37:39-40.

“God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1.

Amen.” Jude 1:24-25.

“4 I sought the LORD, and He answered me,
And delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces will never be ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him
And saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him,
And rescues them.” Psalm 34:4-7.

And, God’s help does not “only” apply to times of trouble.

“8 O taste and see that the LORD is good;
How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
9 O fear the LORD, you His saints;
For to those who fear Him there is no want.
10 The young lions do lack and suffer hunger;
But they who seek the LORD shall not be in want of any good thing.” Psalm 34:8-10.

“11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
The LORD gives grace and glory;
No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts,
How blessed is the man who trusts in You!” Psalm 84:11-12.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
3 Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
4 Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
5 Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.” Psalm 103:1-5.

“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?” Romans 8:32.

“For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.”  And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.”  Hebrews 6:13-14.

“I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;
From where shall my help come?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2.

“Your lovingkindness, O LORD, extends to the heavens,
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.” Psalm 36:5.

“but just as it is written,

“THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD,
AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN,
ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.”

… Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,” 1 Corinthians 2:9 and 12.

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17.

“Praise the LORD!
How blessed is the man who fears the LORD,
Who greatly delights in His commandments.
2 His descendants will be mighty on earth;
The generation of the upright will be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches are in his house,
And his righteousness endures forever.
4 Light arises in the darkness for the upright;
He is gracious and compassionate and righteous.” Psalm 112:1-4.

“How blessed is everyone who fears the LORD,
Who walks in His ways.
2 When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands,
You will be happy and it will be well with you.” Psalm 128:1-2.

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28.

“Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” Psalm 23:6.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 12:1-15.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2012&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Now these are the ones who came to David at Ziklag, while he was still restricted because of Saul the son of Kish;  and they were among the mighty men who helped him in war.  They were equipped with bows, using both the right hand and the left to sling stones and to shoot arrows from the bow;  they were Saul’s kinsmen from Benjamin.  The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite;  and Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth, and Beracah and Jehu the Anathothite, …

From the Gadites there came over to David in the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty men of valor, men trained for war, who could handle shield and spear, and whose faces were like the faces of lions, and they were as swift as the gazelles on the mountains.  Ezer was the first, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third, …  These of the sons of Gad were captains of the army;  he who was least was equal to a hundred and the greatest to a thousand.  These are the ones who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing all its banks and they put to flight all those in the valleys, both to the east and to the west.”  1 Chronicles 1-3 and 8-9 and 14-15.

————-

It is easy to focus on the might and skill of the men who came over to David to support him.  For example, we may be in awe of “the sons of Gad were captains of the army;  he who was least was equal to a hundred and the greatest to a thousand.”

But, let us meditate on the point that the LORD is not only for us, His chosen people, but the LORD is also against His enemies.

“15 The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous
And His ears are open to their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against evildoers,
To cut off the memory of them from the earth.” Psalm 34:15-16.

“9 “For the LORD’S portion is His people;
Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.
10 “He found him in a desert land,
And in the howling waste of a wilderness;
He encircled him, He cared for him,
He guarded him as the pupil of His eye.” Deuteronomy 32:9-10.

“How could one chase a thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their Rock had sold them,
And the LORD had given them up?” Deuteronomy 32:30.

“‘Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,
In due time their foot will slip;
For the day of their calamity is near,
And the impending things are hastening upon them.’” Deuteronomy 32:35.

“39 ‘See now that I, I am He,
And there is no god besides Me;
It is I who put to death and give life.
I have wounded and it is I who heal,
And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
40 ‘Indeed, I lift up My hand to heaven,
And say, as I live forever,
41 If I sharpen My flashing sword,
And My hand takes hold on justice,
I will render vengeance on My adversaries,
And I will repay those who hate Me.” Deuteronomy 32:39-41.

“10 Now therefore, O kings, show discernment;
Take warning, O judges of the earth.
11 Worship the LORD with reverence
And rejoice with trembling.
12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,
For His wrath may soon be kindled.
How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!” Psalm 2:10-12.
