Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 11:20-47.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2011&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“As for Abshai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the thirty, and he swung his spear against three hundred and killed them;  and he had a name as well as the thirty.  Of the three in the second rank he was the most honored and became their commander;  however, he did not attain to the first three.

Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, mighty in deeds, struck down the two sons of Ariel of Moab.  He also went down and killed a lion inside a pit on a snowy day.  He killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature five cubits tall.  Now in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam, but he went down to him with a club and snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.  These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did, and had a name as well as the three mighty men.  Behold, he was honored among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three;  and David appointed him over his guard.

———–

Why mention that Abshai “did not attain to the first three” and that Benaiah “did not attain to the three”?

Normally, when we are honoring outstanding people, we do not mention that they were not among the Top Three.

I think it is profitable to meditate upon a possible purpose for including it in today’s Scripture.

Generally, in life, we are tempted to be satisfied with “good enough”.

But, what does Scripture state?

“Hear, O Israel!  The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!  You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”  Deuteronomy 6:4-5.

“Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”  Matthew 5:48.

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize?  Run in such a way that you may win.”  1 Corinthians 4:24.

But, there is hope!

“Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.  But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.  For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.  For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”  Galatians 3:24.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.”  Ephesians 1:3-6.

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”  1 Corinthians 1:30-31.

So, let us go back to the “Therefore you are to be perfect” verse.  You will be perfect, because “your heavenly Father is perfect” and He will provide everything that you need to be perfect.

Likewise, we read:  “For by one offering He (Christ) has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.”  Hebrews 10:14.

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 1:6.

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  Hebrews 12:1-2.

“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.  And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”  James 1:2-4.

“After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.  To Him be dominion forever and ever.  Amen.”  1 Peter 5:10-11.

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely;  and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.”  1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever.  Amen.”  Jude 1:24.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 11:10-19.

Now these are the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.  These constitute the list of the mighty men whom David had:  Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty;  he lifted up his spear against three hundred whom he killed at one time.

After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men.  He was with David at Pasdammim when the Philistines were gathered together there to battle, and there was a plot of ground full of barley;  and the people fled before the Philistines.  They took their stand in the midst of the plot and defended it, and struck down the Philistines;  and the LORD saved them by a great victory.

Now three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam, while the army of the Philistines was camping in the valley of Rephaim.  David was then in the stronghold, while the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.  David had a craving and said, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!”  So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David;  nevertheless David would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD;  and he said, “Be it far from me before my God that I should do this.  Shall I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?  For at the risk of their lives they brought it.”  Therefore he would not drink it.  These things the three mighty men did.”  1 Chronicles 11:10-19.

————

We trust the LORD.  We do not trust in man.  But, we do realize that the LORD uses people to support us and our work.  We do realize as today’s Scripture states that although mighty men did mighty deeds, it is ultimately the LORD Who saves us.  As today’s Scripture does, and other Scripture does, it is appropriate to honor them.

“And what more shall I say?  For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, who by faith conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.”  Hebrews 11:32-24.

“Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities.  …  For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.  Render to all what is due them:  tax to whom tax is due;  custom to whom custom;  fear to whom fear;  honor to whom honor.”  Romans 13:1 and 6-7.

Heroes are not limited to mighty men or government leaders.  We have Halls of Fame to honor outstanding people who show excellence in many different areas.  We also give out medals and hold banquets to honor.  We also give thanks and praise to honor.

They may not directly support us.  But, they and their stories inspire us to be better.  They inspire us to serve God and man.

“The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.”  1 Timothy 5:17.

“‘Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the LORD your God gives you.”  Deuteronomy 5:16.

“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”  Philippians 4:8.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 11:1-9.

“Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.  In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel;  and the LORD your God said to you, ‘You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be prince over My people Israel.’”  So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD;  and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.

Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus);  and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there.  The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not enter here.”  Nevertheless David captured the stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David).  Now David had said, “Whoever strikes down a Jebusite first shall be chief and commander.”  Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.  Then David dwelt in the stronghold;  therefore it was called the city of David.  He built the city all around, from the Millo even to the surrounding area;  and Joab repaired the rest of the city.  David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him.”  1 Chronicles 11:1-9.

———–

David was chosen by the LORD to be king of Israel.  The LORD’s choice of David was the reason why “the LORD of hosts was with him.”  And, “the LORD of hosts was with him” was the reason why David became greater and greater.

Consider the following from the Canons of the Dordt in the section titled FIRST HEAD OF DOCTRINE Of Divine Predestination that “election is the fountain of every saving good”.

Article 9.  This election was not founded upon foreseen faith, and the obedience of faith, holiness, or any other good quality of disposition in man, as the pre-requisite, cause or condition on which it depended;  but men are chosen to faith and to the obedience of faith, holiness, etc., therefore election is the fountain of every saving good;  from which proceed faith, holiness, and the other gifts of salvation, and finally eternal life itself, as its fruits and effects, according to that of the apostle:  “He hath chosen us (not because we were) but that we should be holy, and without blame, before him in love,”  Ephesians 1:4.

“12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.

13 The LORD looks from heaven;
He sees all the sons of men;
14 From His dwelling place He looks out
On all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 He who fashions the hearts of them all,
He who understands all their works.
16 The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not delivered by great strength.
17 A horse is a false hope for victory;
Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength.” Psalm 33:12-17.

“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God;  the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

“The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the LORD loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the LORD brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.”  Deuteronomy 7:6-8.

“For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;  and these whom He predestined, He also called;  and these whom He called, He also justified;  and these whom He justified, He also glorified.”  Romans 8:29-30.

“For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;  but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God.  But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”  1 Corinthians 1:26-31.

But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.” 1 Peter 2:9-10.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles chapter 10.  Here is a link to this chapter – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2010&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against the LORD, because of the word of the LORD which he did not keep;  and also because he asked counsel of a medium, making inquiry of it, and did not inquire of the LORD.  Therefore He killed him and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.”  1 Chronicles 10:13-14.

————-

Here is a more detailed description both of the word of the LORD and the specifics of Saul’s trespass which he committed against the LORD.

Only priests were allowed to offer burnt offerings.  See, for example, Leviticus 6:8-13.

“Now the Philistines assembled to fight with Israel, 30,000 chariots and 6,000 horsemen, and people like the sand which is on the seashore in abundance;  and they came up and camped in Michmash, east of Beth-aven.  When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were hard-pressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in cliffs, in cellars, and in pits.  Also some of the Hebrews crossed the Jordan into the land of Gad and Gilead.  But as for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

Now he waited seven days, according to the appointed time set by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal;  and the people were scattering from him.  So Saul said, “Bring to me the burnt offering and the peace offerings.”  And he offered the burnt offering.  As soon as he finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came;  and Saul went out to meet him and to greet him.  But Samuel said, “What have you done?”  And Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the appointed days, and that the Philistines were assembling at Michmash, therefore I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not asked the favor of the LORD.’  So I forced myself and offered the burnt offering.”  Samuel said to Saul, “You have acted foolishly;  you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, for now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.  But now your kingdom shall not endure.  The LORD has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has appointed him as ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”  1 Samuel 13:5-14.

“‘Do not turn to mediums or spiritists;  do not seek them out to be defiled by them.  I am the LORD your God.”  Leviticus 19:31.

“When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was afraid and his heart trembled greatly.  When Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by prophets.  Then Saul said to his servants, “Seek for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.”  And his servants said to him, “Behold, there is a woman who is a medium at En-dor.”  1 Samuel 28:5-7.

Today, we may not be tempted to offer burnt offerings nor to inquire from a medium.  But, more generally, we may be tempted to disobey the LORD.  Let us consider more generally the following Scriptures.

“Samuel said,

“Has the LORD as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
As in obeying the voice of the LORD?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams.

“For rebellion is as the sin of divination,
And insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,
He has also rejected you from being king.” 1 Samuel 15:22-23.

We may be tempted to think that the LORD’S punishment of Saul was harsh.  We may think that Saul and the people were hard-pressed in war and that there was not another way to survive.

Today, we may also feel hard-pressed.  We may also think that we need to take things into our own hands even if it means disobeying the LORD.

But, there is hope!

“5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the LORD and turn away from evil.
8 It will be healing to your body
And refreshment to your bones.” Proverbs 3:5-8.

“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you;  and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.  I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.”  Ezekiel 36:26-27.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 9:28-44.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%209&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Now some of them had charge of the utensils of service, for they counted them when they brought them in and when they took them out.  Some of them also were appointed over the furniture and over all the utensils of the sanctuary and over the fine flour and the wine and the oil and the frankincense and the spices.  Some of the sons of the priests prepared the mixing of the spices.  Mattithiah, one of the Levites, who was the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, had the responsibility over the things which were baked in pans.  Some of their relatives of the sons of the Kohathites were over the showbread to prepare it every sabbath.”  1 Chronicles 9:28-32.

—————-

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.  And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.  There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.  But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.  For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;  to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.  But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.  For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

For the body is not one member, but many.  If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.  And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.  If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be?  If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?  But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.”  1 Corinthians 12:4-18.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 9:1-27.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%209&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Now the gatekeepers were Shallum and Akkub and Talmon and Ahiman and their relatives (Shallum the chief being stationed until now at the king’s gate to the east).  These were the gatekeepers for the camp of the sons of Levi.  Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his relatives of his father’s house, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the thresholds of the tent;  and their fathers had been over the camp of the LORD, keepers of the entrance.  Phinehas the son of Eleazar was ruler over them previously, and the LORD was with him.  Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was gatekeeper of the entrance of the tent of meeting.  All these who were chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds were 212.  These were enrolled by genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer appointed in their office of trust.  So they and their sons had charge of the gates of the house of the LORD, even the house of the tent, as guards.  The gatekeepers were on the four sides, to the east, west, north and south.  Their relatives in their villages were to come in every seven days from time to time to be with them;  for the four chief gatekeepers who were Levites, were in an office of trust, and were over the chambers and over the treasuries in the house of God.  They spent the night around the house of God, because the watch was committed to them;  and they were in charge of opening it morning by morning.”  1 Chronicles 9:17-27.

—————

Generally, we like the idea of God’s protection.  How fondly we embraced the theme of yesterday’s devotion!

“May the beloved of the LORD dwell in security by Him,
Who shields him all the day,
And he dwells between His shoulders.” See Deuteronomy 33:12.

But, strangely and inconsistently, we do not like gates that are used to protect.  We prefer to think of ourselves as open and welcoming everyone.  But, consider that we lock the front door of our home!

Today’s Scripture (as emphasized by bold italic font) and the following two Scriptures from yesterday’s devotion reminds us how much the LORD used gates, gatekeepers, and guards to protect.

“12 Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For He has strengthened the bars of your gates; …” Psalm 147:12-13.

“2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
So the LORD surrounds His people
From this time forth and forever.
3 For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest upon the land of the righteous,
So that the righteous will not put forth their hands to do wrong.” Psalm 125:2-3.

So many Scriptures can be considered.  Here are a few that will hopefully lead you to think of even more.

“7 The LORD will protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
8 The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in
From this time forth and forever.” Psalm 121:7-8.

“That I may tell of all Your praises,
That in the gates of the daughter of Zion
I may rejoice in Your salvation.
” Psalm 9:4.

Consider the following from the Westminster Larger Catechism.

Q. 45. How doth Christ execute the office of a king?

A. Christ executeth the office of a king, in calling out of the world a people to himself, and giving them officers, laws, and censures, by which he visibly governs them;  in bestowing saving grace upon his elect, rewarding their obedience, and correcting them for their sins, preserving and supporting them under all their temptations and sufferings, restraining and overcoming all their enemies, and powerfully ordering all things for his own glory and their good:  and also in taking vengeance on the rest, who know not God, and obey not the gospel.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.  But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep.  To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”  John 10:1-2.

“Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are:  immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”  Galatians 5:19-21.

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?  Do not be deceived;  neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.  Such were some of you;  but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.”  1 Corinthians 6:9-11.

“Finally, brethren, pray for us that the word of the Lord will spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it did also with you;  and that we will be rescued from perverse and evil men;  for not all have faith.  But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.”  2 Thessalonians 3:1-3.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles chapter 8.  Here is a link to this chapter – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%208&version=NASB1995

I only quote the following verses.

“And Benjamin became the father of Bela his firstborn, Ashbel the second, Aharah the third, Nohah the fourth and Rapha the fifth.  …   These were heads of the fathers’ households according to their generations, chief men who lived in Jerusalem.

Now in Gibeon, Jeiel, the father of Gibeon lived, and his wife’s name was Maacah;  and his firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Nadab, Gedor, Ahio and Zecher.  Mikloth became the father of Shimeah.  And they also lived with their relatives in Jerusalem opposite their other relatives.”  1 Chronicles 8:1 and 28-32.

——————–

Let’s meditate generally about what was said about Benjamin and where some of the sons of Benjamin lived, namely Jerusalem.

“Now this is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the sons of Israel before his death.  He said,

“The LORD came from Sinai,
And dawned on them from Seir;
He shone forth from Mount Paran,
And He came from the midst of ten thousand holy ones;
At His right hand there was flashing lightning for them.
Indeed, He loves the people;
All Your holy ones are in Your hand,
And they followed in Your steps
;
Everyone receives of Your words.

Of Benjamin he said,

May the beloved of the LORD dwell in security by Him,
Who shields him all the day,
And he dwells between His shoulders
.” Deuteronomy 33:1-3 and 12.

Here are some verses about Jerusalem where some of the sons of Benjamin were blessed to live.

“Those who trust in the LORD
Are as Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but abides forever.
2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
So the LORD surrounds His people
From this time forth and forever.

3 For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest upon the land of the righteous,
So that the righteous will not put forth their hands to do wrong.” Psalm 125:1-3.

“Praise the LORD!
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
For it is pleasant and praise is becoming.
2 The LORD builds up Jerusalem;
He gathers the outcasts of Israel.
3 He heals the brokenhearted
And binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:1-3.

“12 Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For He has strengthened the bars of your gates;
He has blessed your sons within you.
14 He makes peace in your borders;
He satisfies you with the finest of the wheat.

19 He declares His words to Jacob,
His statutes and His ordinances to Israel.
20 He has not dealt thus with any nation;
And as for His ordinances, they have not known them.
Praise the LORD!” Psalm 147:12-14 and 19-20.

“I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the LORD.”
2 Our feet are standing
Within your gates, O Jerusalem,
3 Jerusalem, that is built
As a city that is compact together;
4 To which the tribes go up, even the tribes of the LORD—
An ordinance for Israel—
To give thanks to the name of the LORD.” Psalm 122:1-4.

These blessings upon Benjamin and the sons of Benjamin are for us too who are also the beloved of the LORD.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust!”
3 For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper
And from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with His pinions,
And under His wings you may seek refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.” Psalm 91:1-4.

“And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes;  and there will no longer be any death;  there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain;  the first things have passed away.”  Revelation 21:2-4.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 7:30-40.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%207&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah, and Serah their sister.  The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel, who was the father of Birzaith.  Heber became the father of Japhlet, Shomer and Hotham, and Shua their sister.  …  All these were the sons of Asher, heads of the fathers’ houses, choice and mighty men of valor, heads of the princes.  And the number of them enrolled by genealogy for service in war was 26,000 men.”  1 Chronicles 7:30-32 and 40.

————

Let’s meditate generally about what was said about the sons of Asher and meditate upon the hope that it provides.

First, in today’s Scripture, the sons of Asher were described by the word “choice”.

Let us also look at other Scriptures about what Moses and Jacob, the father of Asher, said about Asher and the sons of Asher.

“Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, “Assemble yourselves that I may tell you what will befall you in the days to come.

“As for Asher, his food shall be rich,
And he will yield royal dainties.” Genesis 49:1 and 20.

“Now this is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the sons of Israel before his death.  He said,

“The LORD came from Sinai,
And dawned on them from Seir;
He shone forth from Mount Paran,
And He came from the midst of ten thousand holy ones;
At His right hand there was flashing lightning for them.
Indeed, He loves the people;
All Your holy ones are in Your hand,
And they followed in Your steps
;
Everyone receives of Your words.

Of Asher he said,

“More blessed than sons is Asher;
May he be favored by his brothers,
And may he dip his foot in oil.
“Your locks will be iron and bronze,
And according to your days, so will your leisurely walk be.” Deuteronomy 33:1-3 and 24-25.

What hope does what was said about the tribe of the sons of Asher provide?

We should eagerly seek to learn about all the blessings received by those chosen of the LORD.  And yet, sadly many seek to meditate upon man’s works and man’s alleged free-will.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
3 Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
4 Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
5 Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.” Psalm 103:1-5.

Even when we meditate upon the difficulty presented by the ungodly, there is hope for the chosen, “vessels of mercy”, that in sharp contrast to the ungodly, “vessels of wrath prepared for destruction”, God will “make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory”.

“Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?  What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?  And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory, even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles.”  Romans 9:21-24.

Now, let us meditate on these other Scriptures.

“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God;  the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.”  Deuteronomy 7:6.

“For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;  and these whom He predestined, He also called;  and these whom He called, He also justified;  and these whom He justified, He also glorified.”  Romans 8:29-30.

“5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
” Psalm 23:5-6.

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 7:20-29.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%207&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“The sons of Ephraim were Shuthelah and Bered his son, Tahath his son, Eleadah his son, Tahath his son, Zabad his son, Shuthelah his son, and Ezer and Elead whom the men of Gath who were born in the land killed, because they came down to take their livestock.  Their father Ephraim mourned many days, and his relatives came to comfort him.  Then he went in to his wife, and she conceived and bore a son, and he named him Beriah, because misfortune had come upon his house.  His daughter was Sheerah, who built lower and upper Beth-horon, also Uzzen-sheerah.  Rephah was his son along with Resheph, Telah his son, Tahan his son, Ladan his son, Ammihud his son, Elishama his son, Non his son and Joshua his son.”  1 Chronicles 7:20-27.

————

In today’s Scripture, we read about Ephraim’s grief caused by the men of Gath killing two of his sons:  Ezer and Elead.  We also read about different ways that Ephraim was comforted.

First, we read that “his relatives came to comfort him.”  Second, we read:  “Then he went in to his wife, and she conceived and bore a son”.  Third, we read;  “His daughter was Sheerah, who built lower and upper Beth-horon, also Uzzen-sheerah.”

How can we use today’s Scripture to consider how we can be helped when we experience grief?

First, most importantly, let us consider that it is God Who is “God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction” and that He does so in different ways, including but not limited to using family and friends to comfort us.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”  2 Corinthians 1:3-4.

Let us appreciate small specific comforts. Sometimes, we don’t need much help and comfort; just a boost to get us to the next day or week. “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34.

Here are two small personal examples of what family and friends did for me which comforted me, both happened many years ago. When my mother died, my wife simply framed a photo of my mother in her twenties and put it on top of our family room bookcase. That small gesture made me think of my mother in heaven with new immortal body and greatly comforted me. When a check did not arrive in the mail and I was hungry and very discouraged, a friend took me to a church social lunch that was suppose to be for the social group only, and he invited me to sit down and eat lunch for free. That small boost got me to the next day when the check did arrive.

Let us not only value our sons or more generally certain family members. What Ephraim’s daughter, Sheerah, did (“who built lower and upper Beth-horon, also Uzzen-sheerah”) was likely unexpected but benefited Ephraim.  We are reminded what Ruth did for her mother-in-law, Naomi, who lost two of her sons, generally in helping her so much over a long time and also specifically when she gave birth to Obed, the father of Jesse, the father of David.

“Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed is the LORD who has not left you without a redeemer today, and may his name become famous in Israel. May he (Obed) also be to you a restorer of life and a sustainer of your old age;  for your daughter-in-law (Ruth), who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”  Ruth 4:14-15.

So to speak, we naturally want our cheese to come from one place.  But, we need to recognize that God sometimes moves our cheese around to build up our faith in Him.  Thus, we should keep our eyes open and appreciate that God may help us in different ways, sometimes in very unusual and unexpected ways. We should trust God and not only trust that the location of the cheese will always stay the same.

In conclusion, most importantly, let us consider that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is very familiar with grief and is able and willing to help us.

“3 He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried
;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.” Isaiah 53:3-5.

“And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.”  Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.”  2 Corinthians 12:9.

Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.” Psalm 55:22.

“18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
But the LORD delivers him out of them all.” Psalm 34:18-19.

Peace I leave with you;  My peace I give to you;  not as the world gives do I give to you.  Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”  John 14:27.

Dear Family and Friends:

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Chronicles 7:1-19.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%207&version=NASB1995

I only quote the following verses.

“Now the sons of Issachar were four:  Tola, Puah, Jashub and Shimron.  The sons of Tola were Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam and Samuel, heads of their fathers’ households.  The sons of Tola were mighty men of valor in their generations;  their number in the days of David was 22,600.  The son of Uzzi was Izrahiah.  And the sons of Izrahiah were Michael, Obadiah, Joel, Isshiah;  all five of them were chief men.  With them by their generations according to their fathers’ households were 36,000 troops of the army for war, for they had many wives and sons.  Their relatives among all the families of Issachar were mighty men of valor, enrolled by genealogy, in all 87,000.

The sons of Benjamin were three:  Bela and Becher and Jediael.  The sons of Bela were five:  Ezbon, Uzzi, Uzziel, Jerimoth and Iri.  They were heads of fathers’ households, mighty men of valor, and were 22,034 enrolled by genealogy.  The sons of Becher were Zemirah, Joash, Eliezer, Elioenai, Omri, Jeremoth, Abijah, Anathoth and Alemeth.  All these were the sons of Becher.  They were enrolled by genealogy, according to their generations, heads of their fathers’ households, 20,200 mighty men of valor.  The son of Jediael was Bilhan.  And the sons of Bilhan were Jeush, Benjamin, Ehud, Chenaanah, Zethan, Tarshish and Ahishahar.  All these were sons of Jediael, according to the heads of their fathers’ households, 17,200 mighty men of valor, who were ready to go out with the army to war.”  1 Chronicles 7:1-11.

————-

Today’s Scripture speaks of the sons of Issachar and the sons of Benjamin as being “mighty men of valor”.  We may only think of virtues such as courage, strength, and skill.  But, as consider other Scriptures, we may be surprised to learn of other virtues associated with “mighty men of valor”.

Here are just three Scriptures.

“No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life.  Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you;  I will not fail you or forsake you.  Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.  Only be strong and very courageous;  be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you;  do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go.  This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it;  for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.  Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous!  Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:5-9.

“30 As for God, His way is blameless;
The word of the LORD is tried;
He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
31 For who is God, but the LORD?
And who is a rock, except our God,
32 The God who girds me with strength
And makes my way blameless
?
33 He makes my feet like hinds’ feet,
And sets me upon my high places.
34 He trains my hands for battle,
So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have also given me the shield of Your salvation,
And Your right hand upholds me;
And Your gentleness makes me great.” Psalm 18:30-35.
