Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 26:1-12.

“Like snow in summer and like rain in harvest,
So honor is not fitting for a fool.
2 Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying,
So a curse without cause does not alight.
3 A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey,
And a rod for the back of fools.
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
Or you will also be like him.
5 Answer a fool as his folly deserves,
That he not be wise in his own eyes.
6 He cuts off his own feet and drinks violence
Who sends a message by the hand of a fool.
7 Like the legs which are useless to the lame,
So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8 Like one who binds a stone in a sling,
So is he who gives honor to a fool.
9 Like a thorn which falls into the hand of a drunkard,
So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 Like an archer who wounds everyone,
So is he who hires a fool or who hires those who pass by.
11 Like a dog that returns to its vomit
Is a fool who repeats his folly.
12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.”  Proverbs 26:1-12.

—————————

What is “a man wise in his own eyes”?

This man trusts himself rather than trusts God.

This man trusts his own thoughts rather than trusts God’s Word.

Be humble.  Trust God’s Word as to what is right and true rather than trusting your own desires and feelings as to what is right and true.

“Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and turn away from evil.”  Proverbs 3:7.

We see people being wise in their own eyes in their failure to believe God’s salvation.  When confronted with God’s Word that God “… has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires.”  Romans 9:18, they trust their own thoughts and feelings, rather than God’s Word.  “That is not fair!”:  they think.  They choose their own plan of salvation based on their own thoughts and their own feelings.  Often, their own plan of salvation is based on a combination of their belief in free-will, their own works, and their own wisdom.  They do not trust and accept God’s Word as to what He declares is His salvation.

“For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;  but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God.  But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”  1 Corinthians 1:26-31.

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 25:21-28.

“21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
22 For you will heap burning coals on his head,
And the Lord will reward you.
23 The north wind brings forth rain,
And a backbiting tongue, an angry countenance.
24 It is better to live in a corner of the roof
Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.
25 Like cold water to a weary soul,
So is good news from a distant land.
26 Like a trampled spring and a polluted well
Is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.
27 It is not good to eat much honey,
Nor is it glory to search out one’s own glory.
28 Like a city that is broken into and without walls
Is a man who has no control over his spirit.”  Proverbs 25:21-28.

——————————-

“21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
22 For you will heap burning coals on his head,
And the Lord will reward you.”  Verses 21-22.

Other doctrine, because it has high expectations of man, has no or little room for mercy for others.

But, Reformed Doctrine, because of his belief in man’s natural condition of “Total Depravity” and because of his thankfulness of God’s mercy to himself, has much more room for mercy for others.

And, because Reformed Doctrine has such trust in the LORD, Reformed Doctrine actually believes that the LORD will reward him for such mercy as promised in verse 22.

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”  Hebrews 11:6.

“But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink;  for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”  Romans 12:20-21.

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 25:11-20.

“11 Like apples of gold in settings of silver
Is a word spoken in right circumstances.
12 Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold
Is a wise reprover to a listening ear.
13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest
Is a faithful messenger to those who send him,
For he refreshes the soul of his masters.
14 Like clouds and wind without rain
Is a man who boasts of his gifts falsely.
15 By forbearance a ruler may be persuaded,
And a soft tongue breaks the bone.
16 Have you found honey?  Eat only what you need,
That you not have it in excess and vomit it.
17 Let your foot rarely be in your neighbor’s house,
Or he will become weary of you and hate you.
18 Like a club and a sword and a sharp arrow
Is a man who bears false witness against his neighbor.
19 Like a bad tooth and an unsteady foot
Is confidence in a faithless man in time of trouble.
20 Like one who takes off a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar on soda,
Is he who sings songs to a troubled heart.”    Proverbs 25:11-20.

———————————

Sometimes, other doctrine can do less damage and be like “chaff which the wind drives away.”  Psalm 1:4.

At other times, other doctrine can do much more damage and be like “A little leaven (which) leavens the whole lump of dough.”  Galatians 5:9.

But, “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism, are like “apples of gold” in a setting of God’s complete salvation of us.  Verse 11.  Those apples of gold are God’s works of “Unconditional Election”, “Limited Atonement”, “Irresistible Grace” and “Preservation of the Saints” in a setting of God’s complete salvation of us.

For while other doctrine exalts man and focuses on what man should do, Reformed Doctrine exalts God and focuses on what God has done.

“5 Thus says the Lord,
“Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind
And makes flesh his strength,
And whose heart turns away from the Lord.
6 “For he will be like a bush in the desert
And will not see when prosperity comes,
But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness,
A land of salt without inhabitant.
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord
And whose trust is the Lord.
8 “For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream
And will not fear when the heat comes;
But its leaves will be green,
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit.”  Jeremiah 17:5-8.

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 25:1-10.

“These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, transcribed.

2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter,
But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
3 As the heavens for height and the earth for depth,
So the heart of kings is unsearchable.
Take away the dross from the silver,
And there comes out a vessel for the smith;
5 Take away the wicked before the king,
And his throne will be established in righteousness.
6 Do not claim honor in the presence of the king,
And do not stand in the place of great men;
7 For it is better that it be said to you, “Come up here,”
Than for you to be placed lower in the presence of the prince,
Whom your eyes have seen.

8 Do not go out hastily to argue your case;
Otherwise, what will you do in the end,
When your neighbor humiliates you?
9 Argue your case with your neighbor,
And do not reveal the secret of another,
10 Or he who hears it will reproach you,
And the evil report about you will not pass away.”  Proverbs 25:1-10.

——————————-

“Take away the wicked before the king,
And his throne will be established in righteousness.”  Verse 5.

“Like a trampled spring and a polluted well
Is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.”  Proverbs 25:26.

“…  Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.”  1 Corinthians 5:13.

“Your boasting is not good.  Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?  Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened.  For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.  Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”  1 Corinthians 5:6-8.

We are called to purity of doctrine.  “in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified,”  Titus 2:7.

Consider Article 29:  Of the marks of the true Church, and wherein she differs from the false Church. in Belgic Confession:

“… The marks, by which the true Church is known, are these:  if the pure doctrine of the gospel is preached therein;  if she maintains the pure administration of the sacraments as instituted by Christ;  if church discipline is exercised in punishing of sin:  in short, if all things are managed according to the pure Word of God, all things contrary thereto rejected, and Jesus Christ acknowledged as the only Head of the Church.  …”

If we cannot identify “the pure doctrine of the gospel”, then we are in trouble.

But, we can identify “the pure doctrine of the gospel”.  It is the Reformed Doctrine of Salvation expressed in the Canons of Dordt summarized in a nutshell by “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism.

So, are we going to preach and teach the Reformed Doctrine of Salvation expressed in the Canons of Dordt summarized in a nutshell by “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism?

Or, are we going to be “seeker sensitive” with other doctrine?

Are we going to have the primary intention of not offending so that we hide or obscure or tarnish “the pure doctrine of the gospel”?

If we do so, it would be comparable to that “righteous man who gives way before the wicked” with a result like “a trampled spring and a polluted well” that we read in Proverbs 25:26.

“Take away the dross from the silver,
And there comes out a vessel for the smith;”  Verse 4.

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 24:23-34.

“23 These also are sayings of the wise.
To show partiality in judgment is not good.
24 He who says to the wicked, “You are righteous,”
Peoples will curse him, nations will abhor him;
25 But to those who rebuke the wicked will be delight,
And a good blessing will come upon them.
26 He kisses the lips
Who gives a right answer.

27 Prepare your work outside
And make it ready for yourself in the field;
Afterwards, then, build your house.

28 Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause,
And do not deceive with your lips.
29 Do not say, “Thus I shall do to him as he has done to me;
I will render to the man according to his work.”

30 I passed by the field of the sluggard
And by the vineyard of the man lacking sense,
31 And behold, it was completely overgrown with thistles;
Its surface was covered with nettles,
And its stone wall was broken down.
32 When I saw, I reflected upon it;
I looked, and received instruction.
33 “A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest,”
34 Then your poverty will come as a robber
And your want like an armed man.”  Proverbs 24:23-34.

—————————

“But to those who rebuke the wicked will be delight,
And a good blessing will come upon them.”  Verse 25.

“He who rebukes a man will afterward find more favor
Than he who flatters with the tongue.”  Proverbs 28:23.

“Faithful are the wounds of a friend,
But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.”  Proverbs 27:6.

We have noticed throughout the Book of Proverbs the sharp contrast between the righteous and the wicked as a means of rebuking the wicked.

Reformed Doctrine Daily Devotions has tried to contrast other doctrine with Reformed Doctrine as a means of rebuking other doctrine.

“Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 3:12.

“holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.”  Titus 1:9.

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 24:13-22.

“13 My son, eat honey, for it is good,
Yes, the honey from the comb is sweet to your taste;
14 Know that wisdom is thus for your soul;
If you find it, then there will be a future,
And your hope will not be cut off.

15 Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous;
Do not destroy his resting place;
16 For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again,
But the wicked stumble in time of calamity.

17 Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,
And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles;
18 Or the Lord will see it and be displeased,
And turn His anger away from him.

19 Do not fret because of evildoers
Or be envious of the wicked;
20 For there will be no future for the evil man;
The lamp of the wicked will be put out.

21 My son, fear the Lord and the king;
Do not associate with those who are given to change,
22 For their calamity will rise suddenly,
And who knows the ruin that comes from both of them?”  Proverbs 24:13-22.

Wisdom is good for our soul.  Verses 13-14.

We seek wisdom from the Book of Proverbs and the other books of the Bible.  Like we eat food every day, we read the Bible every day.  “… ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”  Matthew 4:4.

We seek wisdom in the person of Christ “…  who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption …”  1 Corinthians 1:30 “in whom (Christ) are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”  Colossians 2:3.

But, although we do seek wisdom, we realize that it is God’s work that makes us find it.

God answered Job by a series of questions which pointed to His wisdom and mighty power in Job chapter 38, including that He alone gives wisdom and understanding.

“Who has put wisdom in the innermost being
Or given understanding to the mind?”  Job 38:36.

But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”  1 Corinthians 1:30-31.

“6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;  …”  Proverbs 2:6-7.

We pray “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.”  Ephesians 1:17.

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”  James 1:5.

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 24:1-12.

“Do not be envious of evil men,
Nor desire to be with them;
2 For their minds devise violence,
And their lips talk of trouble.

3 By wisdom a house is built,
And by understanding it is established;
4 And by knowledge the rooms are filled
With all precious and pleasant riches.

5 A wise man is strong,
And a man of knowledge increases power.
6 For by wise guidance you will wage war,
And in abundance of counselors there is victory.

7 Wisdom is too exalted for a fool,
He does not open his mouth in the gate.

8 One who plans to do evil,
Men will call a schemer.
9 The devising of folly is sin,
And the scoffer is an abomination to men.

10 If you are slack in the day of distress,
Your strength is limited.

11 Deliver those who are being taken away to death,
And those who are staggering to slaughter, Oh hold them back.
12 If you say, “See, we did not know this,”
Does He not consider it who weighs the hearts?
And does He not know it who keeps your soul?
And will He not render to man according to his work?”  Proverbs 24:1-12.

———————-

“Deliver those who are being taken away to death,
And those who are staggering to slaughter, Oh hold them back.”  Verse 11.

Other doctrine focuses on man, receives this verse as a call for man’s action, and plans how he will save others.

But, Reformed Doctrine focuses on God, makes this verse his prayer to God, and beholds God’s great work of salvation.

Reformed Doctrine recognizes the “Total Depravity” of man taught by Scripture.  All of us are being taken away to death.  All of us are staggering to slaughter going down to the pit.

Only God can deliver us from death.

“What man can live and not see death?
Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol?  Selah.”  Psalm 89:48.

“To You, O Lord, I call;
My rock, do not be deaf to me,
For if You are silent to me,
I will become like those who go down to the pit.”  Psalm 28:1.

“2 O Lord my God,
I cried to You for help, and You healed me.
3 O Lord, You have brought up my soul from Sheol;
You have kept me alive, that I would not go down to the pit.”  Psalm 30:2-3.

“For You have delivered my soul from death,
Indeed my feet from stumbling,
So that I may walk before God
In the light of the living.”  Psalm 56:13.

“18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope for His lovingkindness,
19 To deliver their soul from death
And to keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.”  Psalm 33:18-20.

“God is to us a God of deliverances;
And to God the Lord belong escapes from death.”  Psalm 68:20.

“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  For one will hardly die for a righteous man;  though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.  But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.  For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.”  Romans 5:6-10.

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 23:24-35.

“24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,
And he who sires a wise son will be glad in him.
25 Let your father and your mother be glad,
And let her rejoice who gave birth to you.

26 Give me your heart, my son,
And let your eyes delight in my ways.
27 For a harlot is a deep pit
And an adulterous woman is a narrow well.
28 Surely she lurks as a robber,
And increases the faithless among men.

29 Who has woe?  Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions?  Who has complaining?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who has redness of eyes?
30 Those who linger long over wine,
Those who go to taste mixed wine.
31 Do not look on the wine when it is red,
When it sparkles in the cup,
When it goes down smoothly;
32 At the last it bites like a serpent
And stings like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange things
And your mind will utter perverse things.
34 And you will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea,
Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.
35 “They struck me, but I did not become ill;
They beat me, but I did not know it.
When shall I awake?
I will seek another drink.”  Proverbs 23:24-35.

——————-

“The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,
And he who sires a wise son will be glad in him.”  Verse 24.

“I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.”  3 John 1:4.

Other doctrine sees only man and a father’s hope in his son in verse 24.

But, Reformed Doctrine sees God (our Heavenly Father), a son’s great hope in His Heavenly Father that He will receive righteousness from His Heavenly Father, and great joy for God from seeing the righteousness in His son that He produced in verse 24.

“…  In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us.  …”  Ephesians 1:4-8.

“But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.  Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”  Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son;  and if a son, then an heir through God.”  Galatians 4:4-7.

“Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.”  Romans 7:4.

“What shall we say then?  Is the Law sin?  May it never be!  On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law;  for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “You shall not covet.”  But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind;  for apart from the Law sin is dead.”  Romans 7:7-8.

“Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.  But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.  For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.  For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.  …  And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.”  Galatians 3:24-29.

“For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.  For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”  The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ …”  Romans 8:14-17.

“Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law?  For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman.  But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise.  This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants:  one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves;  she is Hagar.  Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.  But the Jerusalem above is free;  she is our mother.  For it is written,

“Rejoice, barren woman who does not bear;
Break forth and shout, you who are not in labor;
For more numerous are the children of the desolate
Than of the one who has a husband.”

And you brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise.”  Galatians 4:21-28.

For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;  and these whom He predestined, He also called;  and these whom He called, He also justified;  and these whom He justified, He also glorified.”  Romans 8:28-30.

“The Lord your God is in your midst,
A victorious warrior.
He will exult over you with joy,
He will be quiet in His love,
He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.”  Zephaniah 3:17.

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 23:13-23.

“13 Do not hold back discipline from the child,
Although you strike him with the rod, he will not die.
14 You shall strike him with the rod
And rescue his soul from Sheol.

15 My son, if your heart is wise,
My own heart also will be glad;
16 And my inmost being will rejoice
When your lips speak what is right.

17 Do not let your heart envy sinners,
But live in the fear of the Lord always.
18 Surely there is a future,
And your hope will not be cut off.
19 Listen, my son, and be wise,
And direct your heart in the way.
20 Do not be with heavy drinkers of wine,
Or with gluttonous eaters of meat;
21 For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty,
And drowsiness will clothe one with rags.

22 Listen to your father who begot you,
And do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 Buy truth, and do not sell it,
Get wisdom and instruction and understanding.”  Proverbs 23:13-23.

——————

We live in a day and age where diversity is more important than truth.  Everyone’s opinion is equally valuable.  And, it has gotten to the point where people are not only reckless with the truth, they state what is clearly false to support their agenda.

But, today’s theme condemns such lack of respect for truth.

“Buy truth, and do not sell it,
Get wisdom and instruction and understanding.”  Verse 23.

And, even if some or even many do not believe God’s word, their unbelief does not negate God’s word and God’s work and the truth.

“What then?  If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it?  May it never be!  Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written,

“That You may be justified in Your words,
And prevail when You are judged.”  Romans 3:3-4.

There is truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding which are very valuable and should be honored and diligently sought.

“2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom,
Incline your heart to understanding;
3 For if you cry for discernment,
Lift your voice for understanding;
4 If you seek her as silver
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
5 Then you will discern the fear of the Lord
And discover the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
8 Guarding the paths of justice,
And He preserves the way of His godly ones.
9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice
And equity and every good course.”  Proverbs 2:2-9.

“13 How blessed is the man who finds wisdom
And the man who gains understanding.
14 For her profit is better than the profit of silver
And her gain better than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than jewels;
And nothing you desire compares with her.
16 Long life is in her right hand;
In her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are pleasant ways
And all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who hold her fast.”  Proverbs 3:13-18.

“10 “Take my instruction and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choicest gold.
11 “For wisdom is better than jewels;
And all desirable things cannot compare with her.”  Proverbs 8:10-11.

“17 “I love those who love me (Wisdom);
And those who diligently seek me will find me.
18 “Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring wealth and righteousness.
19 “My fruit is better than gold, even pure gold,
And my yield better than choicest silver.
20 “I walk in the way of righteousness,
In the midst of the paths of justice,
21 To endow those who love me with wealth,
That I may fill their treasuries.”  Proverbs 8:17-21.

“33 “Heed instruction and be wise,
And do not neglect it.
34 “Blessed is the man who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at my doorposts.
35 “For he who finds me finds life
And obtains favor from the Lord.”  Proverbs 8:33-35.

Truth and wisdom are personified in Christ.

“Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life;  no one comes to the Father but through Me.”  John 14:6.

Seek Christ “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”  Colossians 2:3.

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”  1 Corinthians 1:30-31.

If we have Christ, then we are complete and all things belong to us.

“For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete …”  Colossians 2:9-10.

“What then shall we say to these things?  If God is for us, who is against us?  He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?”  Romans 8:31-32.

“So then let no one boast in men.  For all things belong to you, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come;  all things belong to you, and you belong to Christ;  and Christ belongs to God.”  1 Corinthians 3:21-23.

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 23:1-12.

“When you sit down to dine with a ruler,
Consider carefully what is before you,
2 And put a knife to your throat
If you are a man of great appetite.
3 Do not desire his delicacies,
For it is deceptive food.

4 Do not weary yourself to gain wealth,
Cease from your consideration of it.
5 [c]When you set your eyes on it, it is gone.
For wealth certainly makes itself wings
Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.
6 Do not eat the bread of a selfish man,
Or desire his delicacies;
7 For as he thinks within himself, so he is.
He says to you, “Eat and drink!”
But his heart is not with you.
8 You will vomit up the morsel you have eaten,
And waste your compliments.
9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool,
For he will despise the wisdom of your words.
10 Do not move the ancient boundary
Or go into the fields of the fatherless,
11 For their Redeemer is strong;
He will plead their case against you.
12 Apply your heart to discipline
And your ears to words of knowledge.”  Proverbs 23:1-12.

————————–

Discipline is important in different areas of life, but it is particularly important when combined with a search of the words of knowledge in Scripture.

Today’s theme combines both discipline and search for words of knowledge in one verse.

“Apply your heart to discipline
And your ears to words of knowledge.”  Verse 12.

Many are satisfied with their undisciplined and undirected zeal alone.  They feel quite righteous when they merely claim:  “I am spiritual.”

But, we remember what the Apostle Paul said.

“Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation.  For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge.  For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.  For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”  Romans 10:1-4.

We also remember the quote of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ from the Book of Isaiah.

“BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’”  Found in both Matthew 15:9 and Mark 7:7.

Jesus also stated in John 4:23-24:  “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth;  for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.  God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Jesus also stated in John 16:13:  “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; …”

There are those who “did not receive the love of truth so as to be saved”.  2 Thessalonians 2:10-13.

Truth is revealed through a diligent and disciplined search through the words of knowledge in Scripture, not through our lazy and random feelings as to what is just and true.

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.”  2 Timothy 2:15.

And, when it comes to the Gospel, salvation itself, we better get it right.

“I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel;  which is really not another;  only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.  But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!  As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!”  Galatians 1:6-9.

And yet, although they lack the words of knowledge, many are satisfied with their undisciplined zeal alone to “win others for Christ” by their gospel built on their feeling that God loves everybody, Christ died for everyone, appealing to man’s pride that he is wise enough and good enough and free enough to seize salvation.

They are more scared of the offense to man’s pride that the true Gospel presents than they are concerned about discipline and pursuit of truth as to what the Gospel actually is.

But, Reformed Doctrine is disciplined, and despite knowing how offensive predestination is to most people, Reformed Doctrine diligently searches and preaches and teaches the words of knowledge in the Scripture to summarize the one and only Gospel in the Canons of Dordt which are even more briefly summarized in “TULIP”.

Scripture shows that salvation is based on God’s wisdom alone and God’s will alone and God’s work alone from beginning to end by God’s grace alone.

Man in his natural condition is dead in sin summarized by “Total Depravity”, and God saved us through God’s “Unconditional Election”, God’s “Limited Atonement”, God’s “Irresistible Grace”, and God’s “Preservation of the Saints”, the “T”, “U”, “L”, “I”, and “P” of “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism, the Reformed Doctrine of Salvation.  This is the one and only Gospel.

But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”  1 Corinthians 1:30-31.
