Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus 10:12-20.

“Then Moses spoke to Aaron, and to his surviving sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering that is left over from the LORD’S offerings by fire and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy.  You shall eat it, moreover, in a holy place, because it is your due and your sons’ due out of the LORD’S offerings by fire;  for thus I have been commanded.  The breast of the wave offering, however, and the thigh of the offering you may eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you;  for they have been given as your due and your sons’ due out of the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the sons of Israel.  The thigh offered by lifting up and the breast offered by waving they shall bring along with the offerings by fire of the portions of fat, to present as a wave offering before the LORD;  so it shall be a thing perpetually due you and your sons with you, just as the LORD has commanded.”

But Moses searched carefully for the goat of the sin offering, and behold, it had been burned up!  So he was angry with Aaron’s surviving sons Eleazar and Ithamar, saying, “Why did you not eat the sin offering at the holy place?  For it is most holy, and He gave it to you to bear away the guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD.  Behold, since its blood had not been brought inside, into the sanctuary, you should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary, just as I commanded.”  But Aaron spoke to Moses, “Behold, this very day they presented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD.  When things like these happened to me, if I had eaten a sin offering today, would it have been good in the sight of the LORD?”  When Moses heard that, it seemed good in his sight.”  Leviticus 10:12-20.

————–

Moses’ question was:  “Why did you not eat the sin offering at the holy place?”

Aaron’s answer was:  “When things like these happened to me, if I had eaten a sin offering today, would it have been good in the sight of the LORD?”

“When Moses heard that, it seemed good in his sight.”

So, let us first consider what happened to Aaron as shown in the same chapter of Leviticus chapter 10.

First, “Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD which He had not commanded them.  And fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.  Leviticus 10:1-2.

Second, “Then Moses said to Aaron, “It is what the LORD spoke, saying,

‘By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy,
And before all the people I will be honored.’”

So Aaron, therefore, kept silent.”  Leviticus 10:3.

Third, “The LORD then spoke to Aaron, saying, “Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting, so that you will not die—it is a perpetual statute throughout your generations— and so as to make a distinction between the holy and the profane, and between the unclean and the clean, and so as to teach the sons of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them through Moses.”  Leviticus 10:8-10.

Consider that these things likely caused Aaron to silently grieve the burning of his sons Nadab and Abihu and tremble in fear at the words of Moses and the LORD that he (Aaron) could do something that would also result in his death too.

Although the sin offering was not specifically mentioned in the first paragraph of today’s Scripture, other offerings were mentioned and that eating those offerings was “your due and your sons’ due”.  But, in contrast, we do notice the law of sin offering in Leviticus 6:24-30 and that nothing was said that eating it was due Aaron, or in other word, optional.  Rather, it was simply commanded:  “The priest who offers it for sin shall eat it.  It shall be eaten in a holy place, in the court of the tent of meeting.”  Leviticus 6:26.

Nevertheless, as we have reviewed, this was an extraordinary day for Aaron.  Whether or not the following Scriptures provide an excuse for Aaron’s refraining from eating the sin offering, it seems profitable to consider the following Scriptures in today’s devotion.

“2 It is better to go to a house of mourning
Than to go to a house of feasting,
Because that is the end of every man,
And the living takes it to heart.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter,
For when a face is sad a heart may be happy.
4 The mind of the wise is in the house of mourning,
While the mind of fools is in the house of pleasure.
5 It is better to listen to the rebuke of a wise man
Than for one to listen to the song of fools.” Ecclesiastes 7:2-5.

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10. King James Version.

“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable.  All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.  Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them.  Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.”  1 Corinthians 6:12-13.

Specifically considering the Lord’s Supper and how we remember Christ and His sin offering, there are times when we should refrain from eating it when we examine ourselves and consider that our mind is not right and that we may eat it in an unworthy manner.  See 1 Corinthians 11:17-34.

All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable.  All things are lawful, but not all things edify.  …

Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”  1 Corinthians 6:23 and 31.

“Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” Revelation 4:11.

“And they *sang the song of Moses, the bond-servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying,

“Great and marvelous are Your works,
O Lord God, the Almighty;
Righteous and true are Your ways,
King of the nations!
4 “Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name?
For You alone are holy;
FOR ALL THE NATIONS WILL COME AND WORSHIP BEFORE YOU,
FOR YOUR RIGHTEOUS ACTS HAVE BEEN REVEALED.” Revelation 15:3-4.

“And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying,

“To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.” Revelation 5:13.

“After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying,

“Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God;” Revelation 19:1.

“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.” Romans 11:36.

Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus 10:1-11.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus%2010&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them.  And fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.  Then Moses said to Aaron, “It is what the LORD spoke, saying,

‘By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy,
And before all the people I will be honored.’”

So Aaron, therefore, kept silent.

The LORD then spoke to Aaron, saying, “Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting, so that you will not die—it is a perpetual statute throughout your generations— and so as to make a distinction between the holy and the profane, and between the unclean and the clean, and so as to teach the sons of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them through Moses.”   Leviticus 10:1-3 and 8-11.

But, there is hope!

Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.  Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;  and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another;  and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”  Hebrews 10:19-25.

What is this “confession of our hope” in verse 23 highlighted in bold italic font above?

What is the Good News a/k/a Gospel?

What was accomplished by the blood of Jesus?

Article 8.  For this was the sovereign counsel, and most gracious will and purpose of God the Father, that the quickening and saving efficacy of the most precious death of his Son should extend to all the elect, for bestowing upon them alone the gift of justifying faith, thereby to bring them infallibly to salvation:  that is, it was the will of God, that Christ by the blood of the cross, whereby he confirmed the new covenant, should effectually redeem out of every people, tribe, nation, and language, all those, and those only, who were from eternity chosen to salvation, and given to him by the Father;  that he should confer upon them faith, which together with all the other saving gifts of the Holy Spirit, he purchased for them by his death; should purge them from all sin, both original and actual, whether committed before or after believing;  and having faithfully preserved them even to the end, should at last bring them free from every spot and blemish to the enjoyment of glory in his own presence forever.  Canons of Dordt in the section titled SECOND HEAD OF DOCTRINE Of the Death of Christ, and the Redemption of Men Thereby.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us.  …”  Ephesians 1:3-8.

“…  Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing;  but that she would be holy and blameless.”  Ephesians 5:25-26.

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.

Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus chapter 9.  Here is a link to this chapter – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus%209&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses herein.

“Now it came about on the eighth day that Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel;  and he said to Aaron, “Take for yourself a calf, a bull, for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering, both without defect, and offer them before the LORD.  Then to the sons of Israel you shall speak, saying, ‘Take a male goat for a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both one year old, without defect, for a burnt offering, and an ox and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD, and a grain offering mixed with oil;  for today the LORD will appear to you.’”  So they took what Moses had commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the whole congregation came near and stood before the LORD.  Moses said, “This is the thing which the LORD has commanded you to do, that the glory of the LORD may appear to you.”  Moses then said to Aaron, “Come near to the altar and offer your sin offering and your burnt offering, that you may make atonement for yourself and for the people;  then make the offering for the people, that you may make atonement for them, just as the LORD has commanded.”

Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them, and he stepped down after making the sin offering and the burnt offering and the peace offerings.  Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting.  When they came out and blessed the people, the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people.  Then fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the portions of fat on the altar; and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.” Leviticus 9:1-7 and 22-24.

———————————

We may be tempted to worship God to get some dazzling sign or wonder like fire from heaven.  But, we are forbidden to test the LORD.  “Jesus said to him (the devil), “On the other hand, it is written, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.’”  Matthew 4:7.

“Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him, saying, `Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”  But He answered and said to them, `An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign;  and yet no sign shall be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet;”  Matthew 12:38-39.

After “Doubting” Thomas saw, heard, and felt Jesus, he thought he “believed”.  But, “Jesus said to him, ‘Because you have seen Me, have you believed?  Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.’” John 20:29.

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”  Hebrews 11:6.

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”  Hebrews 11:1.

“For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope;  for why does one also hope for what he sees?  But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.”  Romans 8:24-25.

But, there is hope that when we worship God as we should, then God will appear to us in some way.

“For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.”  And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.”  Hebrews 6:13-15.

“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”  John 4:24.

“And He *said to them, “It is written, ‘MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER’;  but you are making it a ROBBERS’ DEN.”  Matthew 21:3.

“16 Come and hear, all who fear God,
And I will tell of what He has done for my soul.
17 I cried to Him with my mouth,
And He was extolled with my tongue.
18 If I regard wickedness in my heart,
The Lord will not hear;
19 But certainly God has heard;
He has given heed to the voice of my prayer.
20 Blessed be God,
Who has not turned away my prayer
Nor His lovingkindness from me.
” Psalm 66:16-20.

“15 “He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
16 “With a long life I will satisfy him
And let him see My salvation.
” Psalm 91:15-16.

Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus 8:30-36.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus%208&version=NASB1995

“You shall not go outside the doorway of the tent of meeting for seven days, until the day that the period of your ordination is fulfilled;  for he will ordain you through seven days.  The LORD has commanded to do as has been done this day, to make atonement on your behalf.  At the doorway of the tent of meeting, moreover, you shall remain day and night for seven days and keep the charge of the LORD, so that you will not die, for so I have been commanded.”  Thus Aaron and his sons did all the things which the LORD had commanded through Moses.”  Leviticus 8:33-36.

——————

There is a formality, urgency, summary, and a “passing of the torch” in the following charges that apply to us today.

“As David’s time to die drew near, he charged Solomon his son, saying, “I am going the way of all the earth.  Be strong, therefore, and show yourself a man.  Keep the charge of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies, according to what is written in the Law of Moses, that you may succeed in all that you do and wherever you turn, so that the LORD may carry out His promise which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons are careful of their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’”  1 Kings 2:1-4.

“But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.  Fight the good fight of faith;  take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.  I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,”  1 Timothy 6:11-14.

“I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom:  preach the word;  be ready in season and out of season;  reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;  but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.  But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”  2 Timothy 4:1-4.

But, there is hope!

“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you;  and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.  I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.”  Ezekiel 36:26-27.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”  Ephesians 2:10.

“for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”  Philippians 2:13.

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 1:6.

“No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life.  Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you;  I will not fail you or forsake you.”  Joshua 1:5.

“Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous!  Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:9.

Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus 8:18-29.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus%208&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Then he presented the ram of the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram.  Moses slaughtered it and sprinkled the blood around on the altar.  When he had cut the ram into its pieces, Moses offered up the head and the pieces and the suet in smoke.  After he had washed the entrails and the legs with water, Moses offered up the whole ram in smoke on the altar.  It was a burnt offering for a soothing aroma;  it was an offering by fire to the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Then he presented the second ram, the ram of ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram.  Moses slaughtered it and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.  …  From the basket of unleavened bread that was before the LORD, he took one unleavened cake and one cake of bread mixed with oil and one wafer, and placed them on the portions of fat and on the right thigh.  He then put all these on the hands of Aaron and on the hands of his sons and presented them as a wave offering before the LORD.  Then Moses took them from their hands and offered them up in smoke on the altar with the burnt offering.  They were an ordination offering for a soothing aroma;  it was an offering by fire to the LORD.  Moses also took the breast and presented it for a wave offering before the LORD;  it was Moses’ portion of the ram of ordination, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.”  Leviticus 8:18-23 and 26-29.

———————

As we seen in prior Scripture, there is great care in making sure that each offering was done “just as the LORD had commanded Moses”.  But, all the offerings point to the one offering, namely “the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all”, as we see in the Scripture below.

“For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near.  Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins?  But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year.  For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.  …

By this will (God the Father’s will) we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins;  but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.  For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.  And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us;  for after saying,

“THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THEM
AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD:
I WILL PUT MY LAWS UPON THEIR HEART,
AND ON THEIR MIND I WILL WRITE THEM,”

He then says,

“AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS
I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE.”

Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.” Hebrews 10:1-4 and 11-18.

Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus 8:14-17.

“Then he brought the bull of the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin offering.  Next Moses slaughtered it and took the blood and with his finger put some of it around on the horns of the altar, and purified the altar.  Then he poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it, to make atonement for it.  He also took all the fat that was on the entrails and the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys and their fat;  and Moses offered it up in smoke on the altar.  But the bull and its hide and its flesh and its refuse he burned in the fire outside the camp, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.”   Leviticus 8:14-17.

—————-

What is the significance of burning the remainder of the slaughtered bull outside the camp?

Such practice points us to Jesus, comparing how the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin were burned outside the camp with Jesus, Who also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate.

“For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp.  Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate.  So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach.  For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come.”  Hebrews 13:11-14.

As you can read, there is also an exhortation for us.  “So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach.”

Reproach is defined by Oxford Languages online as “the expression of disapproval or disappointment”.  In other words, let us cling to Christ, through grace by faith, despite the world expressing disapproval of us.

Likewise, we read of Moses’ faith.

“By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt;  for he was looking to the reward.”  Hebrews 11:24-26.

Let us consider and beware of which “christ” or “Christ” to which or to Whom we cling.

The world tolerates its own “christ” that it can manipulate by its own free-will.  This “christ”, the world shows on its stained glass smiling and playing with children or forlornly knocking on the door of our heart.

But, the Christ of Scripture is shown here as a bloody mess, compared to “the bull and its hide and its flesh and its refuse he burned in the fire outside the camp”.

“3 He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
” Isaiah 53:3-5.

“For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.”  Hebrews 10:14.

Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus 8:1-13.

“Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments and the anointing oil and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams and the basket of unleavened bread, and assemble all the congregation at the doorway of the tent of meeting.”  So Moses did just as the LORD commanded him.  When the congregation was assembled at the doorway of the tent of meeting, Moses said to the congregation, “This is the thing which the LORD has commanded to do.”

Then Moses had Aaron and his sons come near and washed them with water.  He put the tunic on him and girded him with the sash, and clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him; and he girded him with the artistic band of the ephod, with which he tied it to him.  He then placed the breastpiece on him, and in the breastpiece he put the Urim and the Thummim.  He also placed the turban on his head, and on the turban, at its front, he placed the golden plate, the holy crown, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Moses then took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them.  He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, to consecrate them.  Then he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him.  Next Moses had Aaron’s sons come near and clothed them with tunics, and girded them with sashes and bound caps on them, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.”  Leviticus 8:1-13.

——————

We take comfort in God’s command being fulfilled.  We see this theme in today’s Scripture and throughout Scripture:  “just as the LORD had commanded”.

Q. 1.  What is thy only comfort in life and death?

A.  That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Savior Jesus Christ;  who, with His precious blood, hath fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil;  and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head;  yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, and therefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me sincerely willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto Him.  Heidelberg Catechism.

We pray for it.

“‘Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.” (in The Lord’s Prayer, Matthew 6:10).

God works in us for His good pleasure.

“for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”  Philippians 2:13.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,”  Ephesians 1:3-5.

God’s sovereignty assures that all of His command and good pleasure will be accomplished.

“The LORD has established His throne in the heavens,
And His sovereignty rules over all.” Psalm 103:19.

“But our God is in the heavens;
He does whatever He pleases.” Psalm 115:3.

“All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing,
But He does according to His will in the host of heaven
And among the inhabitants of earth;
And no one can ward off His hand
Or say to Him, ‘What have You done?
’” Daniel 4:35.

“9 “Remember the former things long past,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure
’;
11 Calling a bird of prey from the east,
The man of My purpose from a far country.
Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned it, surely I will do it.
” Isaiah 46:9-11.

Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus 7:28-34.

“Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘He who offers the sacrifice of his peace offerings to the LORD shall bring his offering to the LORD from the sacrifice of his peace offerings.  His own hands are to bring offerings by fire to the LORD.  He shall bring the fat with the breast, that the breast may be presented as a wave offering before the LORD.  The priest shall offer up the fat in smoke on the altar, but the breast shall belong to Aaron and his sons.  You shall give the right thigh to the priest as a contribution from the sacrifices of your peace offerings.  The one among the sons of Aaron who offers the blood of the peace offerings and the fat, the right thigh shall be his as his portion.  For I have taken the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution from the sons of Israel from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons as their due forever from the sons of Israel.”   Leviticus 7:28-34.

————

What is the significance of the breast and the thigh being given to Aaron the priest and to his sons as their due forever?

Generally, they are good parts, and people seek to eat them.  But, is there more significance?

As I did meditate on it, I came across the following Scriptures which shows how God treats His “CHOSEN RACE”, His “royal PRIESTHOOD”, and His “PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION”  (from 1 Peter 2:9-10).

In Genesis 24:1-4, we see the thigh being used to swear an oath.  “Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he owned, “Please place your hand under my thigh, and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live, but you will go to my country and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

In Isaiah 66:10-14, we see breasts being used to describe the comfort the LORD gives His people.

“10 “Be joyful with Jerusalem and rejoice for her, all you who love her;
Be exceedingly glad with her, all you who mourn over her,
11 That you may nurse and be satisfied with her comforting breasts,
That you may suck and be delighted with her bountiful bosom.”
12 For thus says the LORD, “Behold, I extend peace to her like a river,
And the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
And you will be nursed, you will be carried on the hip and fondled on the knees.
13 “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you;
And you will be comforted in Jerusalem.”
14 Then you will see this, and your heart will be glad,
And your bones will flourish like the new grass;
And the hand of the LORD will be made known to His servants,
But He will be indignant toward His enemies.” Isaiah 66:10-14.

In the following concluding Scripture, we read a good summary of what God has done for His “CHOSEN RACE”, His “royal PRIESTHOOD”, and His “PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION”.

“11 For the LORD has ransomed Jacob
And redeemed him from the hand of him who was stronger than he.
12 “They will come and shout for joy on the height of Zion,
And they will be radiant over the bounty of the LORD—
Over the grain and the new wine and the oil,
And over the young of the flock and the herd;
And their life will be like a watered garden,
And they will never languish again.
13 “Then the virgin will rejoice in the dance,
And the young men and the old, together,
For I will turn their mourning into joy
And will comfort them and give them joy for their sorrow.
14 “I will fill the soul of the priests with abundance,
And My people will be satisfied with My goodness,” declares the LORD.
” Jeremiah 33:11-14.

Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus 7:19-21.

“‘Also the flesh that touches anything unclean shall not be eaten;  it shall be burned with fire.  As for other flesh, anyone who is clean may eat such flesh.  But the person who eats the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings which belong to the LORD, in his uncleanness, that person shall be cut off from his people.  When anyone touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness, or an unclean animal, or any unclean detestable thing, and eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings which belong to the LORD, that person shall be cut off from his people.’”  Leviticus 7:19-21.

“You shall consecrate yourselves therefore and be holy, for I am the LORD your God.  You shall keep My statutes and practice them;  I am the LORD who sanctifies you.”  Leviticus 20:7-8.

“But Peter began speaking and proceeded to explain to them in orderly sequence, saying, “I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, an object coming down like a great sheet lowered by four corners from the sky;  and it came right down to me, and when I had fixed my gaze on it and was observing it I saw the four-footed animals of the earth and the wild beasts and the crawling creatures and the birds of the air.  I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter;  kill and eat.’  But I said, ‘By no means, Lord, for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’  But a voice from heaven answered a second time, ‘What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy.’  This happened three times, and everything was drawn back up into the sky.  And behold, at that moment three men appeared at the house in which we were staying, having been sent to me from Caesarea.  The Spirit told me to go with them without misgivings.  These six brethren also went with me and we entered the man’s house.  And he reported to us how he had seen the angel standing in his house, and saying, ‘Send to Joppa and have Simon, who is also called Peter, brought here;  and he will speak words to you by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’  And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning.  And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’  Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?”  When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, “Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life.”  Acts 11:4-18.

“All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing,
But He does according to His will in the host of heaven
And among the inhabitants of earth;
And no one can ward off His hand
Or say to Him, ‘What have You done?
’” Daniel 4:35.

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,”  1 Corinthians 1:30.

Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus 7:11-18.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus%207&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“‘Now this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings which shall be presented to the LORD.  If he offers it by way of thanksgiving, then along with the sacrifice of thanksgiving he shall offer unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil, and cakes of well stirred fine flour mixed with oil.  With the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving, he shall present his offering with cakes of leavened bread.  Of this he shall present one of every offering as a contribution to the LORD;  it shall belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood of the peace offerings.

‘Now as for the flesh of the sacrifice of his thanksgiving peace offerings, it shall be eaten on the day of his offering;  he shall not leave any of it over until morning.  …”  Leviticus 7:11-15.

——————

We are reminded of the manna that God provided to the sons of Israel for food in the wilderness each day.  “Moses said to them, “Let no man leave any of it until morning.”  Exodus 16:19.

“But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and became foul;  and Moses was angry with them.”  Exodus 16:20.

Whether we receive food or other material things from God, rather than trust God to provide what we need each day, we tend to hoard them to our harm.

“For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.  If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.  But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.  For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”  1 Timothy 6:7-10.

But, there is hope!

“22 The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
” Lamentations 3:22-23.

“But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you?  You of little faith!  Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’  For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things;  for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

“So do not worry about tomorrow;  for tomorrow will care for itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.”  Matthew 6:30-34.

“Peace I leave with you;  My peace I give to you;  not as the world gives do I give to you.  Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”  John 14:27.
