Resting fully and “flush”, solidly and exclusively, on the One Rock

Yesterday’s devotion covers Luke 6:46-49.

46  “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

47  Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like:

48  he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.

49  “But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”  Luke 6:46-49.  (Emphasis added.)

We all experience those floods.  They often come suddenly and unexpectedly.  They seem overwhelming.

When those floods come, it is often too late to make adequate preparations for defense.  We can do a little, but we often can not prevent the brunt of the force.  Whether or not our foundation rests fully and “flush”, solidly and exclusively on Christ, our Rock, will determine whether or not our house will stand.

Oh, yes, our foundation may touch Christ.  But, our foundation may also lean on what we think are the best spiritual thoughts of other religions.  Our foundation may also lean on what our family and friends believe.  Our foundation may also lean on our own wisdom.  Our foundation may also lean on our own willpower.  Our foundation may also lean on our own “free will”.

Think of what would happen to a house if it leans on different multiple contacts that could give way.  Will a builder be satisfied that part of his house, even the majority of his house, is not over a sink-hole?  Will the fact that the house leans on one secure contact save it?  No.  That is why a builder will want to make sure that the foundation of his house rests fully and “flush”, solidly and exclusively on rock or other sufficiently solid earth.

Psalm 22:4
In You our fathers trusted;  They trusted and You delivered them.

Psalm 40:4
How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.

Psalm 44:6
For I will not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me.

Psalm 52:6-8
“6  The righteous will see and fear,
And will laugh at him, saying,
“Behold, the man who would not make God his refuge,
But trusted in the abundance of his riches
And was strong in his evil desire.”
    But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in the house of God;
I trust in the lovingkindness of God forever and ever.”

Psalm 62:8
Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him;  God is a refuge for us. Selah.

Psalm 84:12
O LORD of hosts, How blessed is the man who trusts in You!

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91:2
I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!”

Psalm 118:8
It is better to take refuge in the LORD Than to trust in man.

It is interesting that the phrase “trust alone” does not appear in Scripture.  I think that it is because the word “trust” assumes a full and “flush”, solid and exclusive trust in God.

Don’t “hedge” your bets.  Don’t trust in multiple sources for your salvation.  Don’t rest your foundation on shifting and unreliable contacts.

Build your house with a foundation that rests fully and “flush”, solidly and exclusively, on the One and Only Rock, our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ.

One final comment is necessary.  Such trust does not only believe in the existence of someone.  Such trust believes in the words of that someone and acts accordingly.
