“each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that.”

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Corinthians 7:1-7.

1 Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman.  2 But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband.  3 The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband.  4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does;  and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does5 Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.  6 But this I say by way of concession, not of command.  7 Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am. However, each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that.”  1 Corinthians 7:1-7.

It is good for some believers to be single, and they receive a gift from God to be single.  It is good for other believers to be married, and they receive a gift from God to be married.  And, even for those who eventually get married, they are single for a while before they get married, and they need and receive God’s grace (or gift) to be single when it is best that they are single.

“For the LORD God is a sun and shield;  The LORD gives grace and glory;  No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”  Psalm 84:11

Throughout life, for so many different things, we need to trust God.  “BUT MY RIGHTEOUS ONE SHALL LIVE BY FAITH;  AND IF HE SHRINKS BACK, MY SOUL HAS NO PLEASURE IN HIM.”  Hebrews 10:38

For me, it seems to me that the thing for which I need to trust God the most is the area of finances.  If you read my “Letters to Harry” a/k/a Gold Mining, you will notice it.  (See, for one example, Gold Mine 2 under “Gold Mining” tag at top of page.)

I mention this personal matter, because I can also declare the faithfulness of God both in meeting my needs and in giving me peace while I wait.  And, it is important for particularly the older believers (which I guess I am becoming) to declare the faithfulness of God to help build up the faith of younger believers.  “They will still yield fruit in old age;  They shall be full of sap and very green, To declare that the LORD is upright;  He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.”  Psalm 92:14-15.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:6-7.

1 Peter 5:7
“casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”

1 John 5:15
“And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.”

Here is what The Heidelberg Catechism states in part concerning this matter:

Question 26.  What believest thou when thou sayest, “I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth”?

Answer.  That the eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (who of nothing made heaven and earth, with all that is in them; who likewise upholds and governs the same by his eternal counsel and providence) is for the sake of Christ his Son, my God and my Father;  on whom I rely so entirely, that I have no doubt, but he will provide me with all things necessary for soul and body: and further, that he will make whatever evils he sends upon me, in this valley of tears turn out to my advantage; for he is able to do it, being Almighty God, and willing, being a faithful Father.

In conclusion, whatever we face through life, we need to trust God, Almighty God, our Faithful Father.  We should not be anxious, but rather, we should pray and present our prayer requests to God.  We should trust God knowing that God will give us all the gifts and other grace (including peace) that we need to deal with those things:  “each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that.”
