The kingdom of God penetrates us and affects every part of us “like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.”

Today’s devotion comes from Luke 13:20-21.

“And again He said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?  It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.”  Luke 13:20-21.

The kingdom of God penetrates us and affects every part of us like leaven penetrates the flour and affects every part of the flour until all was leavened.  In the language of the Canons of Dordt quoted toward the end of this devotion, the Holy Spirit “pervades the inmost recesses of the man” to make us alive, illumine our mind, soften our hardened heart, and infuse new and good qualities into our will.

The kingdom of God penetrates our dead body of sin to make us alive.  “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),”  Ephesians 2:4-5.

The kingdom of God penetrates us to remove our stony heart and give us a heart of flesh.  “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you;  and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.  I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.”  Ezekiel 36:26-27.

The kingdom of God penetrates every cell of our body to cleanse us of all sin.  “… the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”  1 John 1:7.  “…   Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”  Psalm 51:7.  Christ cleansed us and prepared us to be His church “in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing  … holy and blameless”  Ephesians 5:26-27.  “For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.  Hebrews 10:12.

Article 11.  But when God accomplishes his good pleasure in the elect, or works in them true conversion, he not only causes the gospel to be externally preached to them, and powerfully illumines their minds by his Holy Spirit, that they may rightly understand and discern the things of the Spirit of God;  but by the efficacy of the same regenerating Spirit, pervades the inmost recesses of the man;  he opens the closed, and softens the hardened heart, and circumcises that which was uncircumcised, infuses new qualities into the will, which though heretofore dead, he quickens;  from being evil, disobedient and refractory, he renders it good, obedient, and pliable;  actuates and strengthens it, that like a good tree, it may bring forth the fruits of good actions.  THIRD AND FOURTH HEADS OF DOCTRINE Of the Corruption of Man, His Conversion to God, and the Manner Thereof of Canons of Dordt.

“… He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”  Romans 8:11.

The kingdom of God penetrates us to conform us to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29) and to transform “… the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.”  Philippians 3:21.
