“I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich)” – “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

Today’s devotion comes from Revelation 2:8-11.

“And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write:

The first and the last, who was dead, and has come to life, says this:

I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich), and the blasphemy by those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.  Do not fear what you are about to suffer.  Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days.  Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.  He who overcomes will not be hurt by the second death.’”   Revelation 2:8-11.

Regarding the statement, “I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich)”, the world may only see our tribulations and poverty, but our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ knows all the riches that He has obtained and given to us.

We are “as unknown yet well-known, as dying yet behold, we live;  as punished yet not put to death, as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing yet possessing all things.”  2 Corinthians 6:9-10.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us.  …”  Ephesians 1:3-7.

Regarding the exhortation and promise, “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”, one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is faithfulness.  “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”. Galatians 5:22.

But, most importantly, God is faithful, and He will never leave us nor forsake us.

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 1:6.

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely;  and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.”  1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.

“…  for He Himself has said, “I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,”  Hebrews 13:5.

“But now, thus says the LORD, your Creator, O Jacob,
And He who formed you, O Israel,
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name; you are Mine!
2 “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they will not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched,
Nor will the flame burn you.
3 “For I am the LORD your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your Savior; …” Isaiah 43:1-3.
