“God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.”

Today’s devotion comes from Genesis chapter 40.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+40&version=NASB1995

I quote only the following verses.

“Then the cupbearer and the baker for the king of Egypt, who were confined in jail, both had a dream the same night, each man with his own dream and each dream with its own interpretation.  When Joseph came to them in the morning and observed them, behold, they were dejected.  He asked Pharaoh’s officials who were with him in confinement in his master’s house, “Why are your faces so sad today?”  Then they said to him, “We have had a dream and there is no one to interpret it.”  Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God?  Tell it to me, please.”  Genesis 40:5-8.

————-

In the rest of the chapter, Joseph correctly interpreted the dreams of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.  Joseph knew that he would not be able to interpret their dreams if God had not given him the ability to interpret their dreams.  “…  Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God?  Tell it to me, please.”  Verse 8.

Likewise, Daniel gave credit to God for the ability given to him to interpret certain dreams.

“19 Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven; 20 Daniel said,

“Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever,
For wisdom and power belong to Him.
21 “It is He who changes the times and the epochs;
He removes kings and establishes kings;
He gives wisdom to wise men
And knowledge to men of understanding.
22 “It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things;
He knows what is in the darkness,
And the light dwells with Him.
23 “To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise,
For You have given me wisdom and power;
Even now You have made known to me what we requested of You,
For You have made known to us the king’s matter.” Daniel 2:19-23.

If God does not reveal the meaning of dreams to everyone, but only to those whom He chooses, why are we so presumptuous to think that we can understand the bigger and more mysterious and more important things, namely things pertaining to salvation, by our own wisdom and will?!

Most importantly, God reveals the things pertaining to salvation to those whom He chooses a/k/a His elect.

“At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.  Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.  All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

Turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.”  Luke 10:21-24.

Consider the following from the Canons of Dordt in the section titled THIRD AND FOURTH HEADS OF DOCTRINE Of the Corruption of Man, His Conversion to God, and the Manner Thereof.

Article 11.  But when God accomplishes his good pleasure in the elect, or works in them true conversion, he not only causes the gospel to be externally preached to them, and powerfully illumines their minds by his Holy Spirit, that they may rightly understand and discern the things of the Spirit of God;  but by the efficacy of the same regenerating Spirit, pervades the inmost recesses of the man; he opens the closed, and softens the hardened heart, and circumcises that which was uncircumcised, infuses new qualities into the will, which though heretofore dead, he quickens; from being evil, disobedient and refractory, he renders it good, obedient, and pliable; actuates and strengthens it, that like a good tree, it may bring forth the fruits of good actions.

“In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s gracious choice.  But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.

What then? What Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened; just as it is written,

“GOD GAVE THEM A SPIRIT OF STUPOR,
EYES TO NOT SEE AND EARS TO HEAR NOT,
DOWN TO THIS VERY DAY.” Romans 11:5-8.

“A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening;  and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul.”  Acts 16:14.

“But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.”  2 Thessalonians 2:13.

“For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory.”  2 Timothy 2:10.

“Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,”  Titus 1:1.

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,”  1 Corinthians 2:12.
