“I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

Today’s devotion comes from Leviticus 24:1-4.

“Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the sons of Israel that they bring to you clear oil from beaten olives for the light, to make a lamp burn continually.  Outside the veil of testimony in the tent of meeting, Aaron shall keep it in order from evening to morning before the LORD continually;  it shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations.  He shall keep the lamps in order on the pure gold lampstand before the LORD continually.” Leviticus 24:1-4.

—————-

Today’s Scripture points us to Jesus, “the Light of the world”.

“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world;  he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”  John 8:12.

But, as the above-stated Scripture states, Jesus was only “the Light of the world” to those who followed Him.

As the next three Scriptures state there were those who remained in darkness who did not comprehend Jesus, “the Light of life”.

“In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.  The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”  John 1:4-5.

“This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.  For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.  But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”  John 3:19-21.

“The one who says he is in the Light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now.  The one who loves his brother abides in the Light and there is no cause for stumbling in him.  But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.”  1 John 2:9-11.

But, for those who followed Jesus, His Light enlightened them.

“There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.”  John 1:9.

“For You are my lamp, O LORD;
And the LORD illumines my darkness.” 2 Samuel 22:29.

And, as we are enlightened a/k/a illumined by Jesus, our light gives light to others and helps them to see. Our light also helps them to see and understand our good works so as to properly give credit to God and glorify God.

“You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;  nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”  Matthew 5:14-16.

Specifically, as stated above, others will give credit to God and glorify God, because they will see and understand that our good works were “wrought in God”.  “But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”  John 3:21.
