Beware of preterism!

Today’s devotions comes from 2 Peter 3:1-7.

“This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.  Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming?  For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.”  For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.  But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.”  2 Peter 3:1-7.

——————–

Today’s Scripture reminds us of the last days (eschatology), the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and the destruction of the present heavens and earth.

Although the format of a daily devotion is to be brief, there are times such as now when Scripture leads us to consider subjects that can not be comprehensively handled within a daily devotion.  We can only raise the issue for consideration, point to helpful links, and make a brief conclusion.

There is a heresy called preterism which teaches “that most or all of the eschatological events prophesied in Scripture have been fulfilled already in the past.”  Preterist Gangrene:  Its Diagnosis, Prognosis and Cure by Martyn McGeown.

“Preterism is the heresy which maintains that most or all of the eschatological events prophesied in Scripture have been fulfilled already in the past.  Postmillennialists, who envisage a “Golden Age” for the Church in which the world is Christianised, consign the New Testament prophecies concerning the Great Tribulation and persecution of the Church, the fearful and widespread apostasy from the truth, and the rise of Antichrist to the past.  These events were fulfilled, say the postmillennialists, in A.D. 70 when Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed by the Romans.  Some are moderate, partial or inconsistent preterists.  Full, extreme, consistent or hyper-preterists relegate not only those prophecies to the past, but they also teach that all New Testament prophecy, including the resurrection of the dead (which they, like Hymenaeus and Philetus, spiritualise), the final judgment and even the Second Advent of Jesus Christ occurred in A.D. 70.  There is therefore no future coming of Christ at the end of the world.  We are already in the new heavens and the new earth in which righteousness dwells (II Peter 3:13).  This world will probably go on forever, or, if it does not last eternally, the Bible has nothing to tell us about the future.”   Preterist Gangrene:  Its Diagnosis, Prognosis and Cure by Martyn McGeown.

Although I have only skimmed this article and do not necessarily agree with everything written therein, the reader needs to beware of preterism.

“Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings;  …”  Hebrews 13:9

“But examine everything carefully;  hold fast to that which is good;”  1 Thessalonians 5:21

“preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.”  2 Timothy 4:2-4.

Beware of preterism!

“For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.  But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.”  Verses 5-7.
Today’s devotion comes from 2 Peter 2:20-22.

20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.  21 For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them.  22 It has happened to them according to the true proverb, “A dog returns to its own vomit,” and, “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.””  2 Peter 2:20-22.

——————————

Disgusting.

More than “A dog returns to its own vomit”.  Verse 21.

More than ““A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.”  Verse 21.

What is more disgusting is those who “escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, (but later) they are again entangled in them and are overcome”.  Verse 20.

“For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.  For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?  …”  Hebrews 2:1-3.

“For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.”  Hebrews 6:4-6.

But, there is hope!

“Preservation of the Saints” a/k/a “Perseverance of the Saints”, the “P” of “TULIP”, the Reformed Doctrine of Salvation!

Here is part of what the Canons of Dordt FIFTH HEAD OF DOCTRINE Of the Perseverance of the Saints states:

Article 3.  By reason of these remains of indwelling sin, and the temptations of sin and of the world, those who are converted could not persevere in a state of grace, if left to their own strength.  But God is faithful, who having conferred grace, mercifully confirms, and powerfully preserves them herein, even to the end.

Article 4.  Although the weakness of the flesh cannot prevail against the power of God, who confirms and preserves true believers in a state of grace, yet converts are not always so influenced and actuated by the Spirit of God, as not in some particular instances sinfully to deviate from the guidance of divine grace, so as to be seduced by, and to comply with the lusts of the flesh;  they must, therefore, be constant in watching and in prayer, that they be not led into temptation.  When these are neglected, they are not only liable to be drawn into great and heinous sins, by Satan, the world and the flesh, but sometimes by the righteous permission of God actually fall into these evils.  This, the lamentable fall of David, Peter, and other saints described in Holy Scripture, demonstrates.

Article 5.  By such enormous sins, however, they very highly offend God, incur a deadly guilt, grieve the Holy Spirit, interrupt the exercise of faith, very grievously wound their consciences, and sometimes lose the sense of God’s favor, for a time, until on their returning into the right way of serious repentance, the light of God’s fatherly countenance again shines upon them.

Article 6.  But God, who is rich in mercy, according to his unchangeable purpose of election, does not wholly withdraw the Holy Spirit from his own people, even in their melancholy falls;  nor suffers them to proceed so far as to lose the grace of adoption, and forfeit the state of justification, or to commit sins unto death;  nor does he permit them to be totally deserted, and to plunge themselves into everlasting destruction.

Article 7.  For in the first place, in these falls he preserves them in the incorruptible seed of regeneration from perishing, or being totally lost;  and again, by his Word and Spirit, certainly and effectually renews them to repentance, to a sincere and godly sorrow for their sins, that they may seek and obtain remission in the blood of the Mediator, may again experience the favor of a reconciled God, through faith adore his mercies, and henceforward more diligently work out their own salvation with fear and trembling.

Article 8.  Thus, it is not in consequence of their own merits, or strength, but of God’s free mercy, that they do not totally fall from faith and grace, nor continue and perish finally in their backslidings;  which, with respect to themselves, is not only possible, but would undoubtedly happen;  but with respect to God, it is utterly impossible, since his counsel cannot be changed, nor his promise fail, neither can the call according to his purpose be revoked, nor the merit, intercession and preservation of Christ be rendered ineffectual, nor the sealing of the Holy Spirit be frustrated or obliterated.

Article 9.  Of this preservation of the elect to salvation, and of their perseverance in the faith, true believers for themselves may and ought to obtain assurance according to the measure of their faith, whereby they arrive at the certain persuasion, that they ever will continue true and living members of the church;  and that they experience forgiveness of sins, and will at last inherit eternal life.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Peter 2:9-19.  (Although verse 9 was part of yesterday’s devotion, we include it again today to help explain the rest of today’s Scripture.)

then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and despise authority.

Daring, self-willed, they do not tremble when they revile angelic majesties, whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord.  But these, like unreasoning animals, born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, reviling where they have no knowledge, will in the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed, suffering wrong as the wages of doing wrong.  They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime.  They are stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, as they carouse with you, having eyes full of adultery that never cease from sin, enticing unstable souls, having a heart trained in greed, accursed children;  forsaking the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;  but he received a rebuke for his own transgression, for a mute donkey, speaking with a voice of a man, restrained the madness of the prophet.

These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved.  For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption;  for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved.”  2 Peter 2:9-19.

————————-

Today’s Scripture provides a glimpse of the wicked (“especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and despise authority” verse 9) and a better understanding of why God is so righteous and just in punishing them.

In addition, the following Jude 1:7-16 also provides a glimpse of the wicked and a better understanding of why God is so righteous and just in punishing them.

“… in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, (they) are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties.  But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”  But these men revile the things which they do not understand;  and the things which they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals, by these things they are destroyed.  Woe to them!  For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.  These are the men who are hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves;  clouds without water, carried along by winds;  autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead, uprooted;  wild waves of the sea, casting up their own shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the black darkness has been reserved forever.

It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”  These are grumblers, finding fault, following after their own lusts;  they speak arrogantly, flattering people for the sake of gaining an advantage.”  Jude 1:7-16.

So, let us praise God for His sovereignty, righteousness, and justice in punishing the wicked!

The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice;
Let the many islands be glad.
Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
Fire goes before Him
And burns up His adversaries round about.
His lightnings lit up the world;
The earth saw and trembled.
The mountains melted like wax at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
The heavens declare His righteousness,
And all the peoples have seen His glory.”  Psalm 97:1-6.

God rescues the righteous and punishes the wicked.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Peter 2:4-10.

“For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;   and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;  and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter;  and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and despise authority.”  2 Peter 2:4-10.

————————–

Today’s Scripture is one long sentence which presents a dual theme of Scripture that God both rescues the righteous and punishes the wicked.  We need this reminder, especially God’s punishment of the wicked, because many of us tend to forget, ignore, or minimize God’s punishment of the wicked, despite the many examples in Scripture.

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;  Lovingkindness and truth go before You.”  Psalm 89:14

“Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe.  And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day, just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.”  Jude 1:5-7.

“Yet You are holy,
O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers trusted;
They trusted and You delivered them.
To You they cried out and were delivered;
In You they trusted and were not disappointed.”  Psalm 22:3-4.

False Teachers and Destructive Heresies and our Hope

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Peter 2:1-3.

“But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.  Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned;  and in their greed they will exploit you with false words;  their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.”  2 Peter 2:1-3.

———————–

Scripture repeatedly warns us about false prophets a/k/a false teachers.

“Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”  Matthew 7:15

“Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many.”  Matthew 24:11

“for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect.”  Mark 13:22

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”  1 John 4:1

“The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule on their own authority;  And My people love it so!  But what will you do at the end of it?”  Jeremiah 5:31

“Also among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing:  The committing of adultery and walking in falsehood;  And they strengthen the hands of evildoers, So that no one has turned back from his wickedness.  All of them have become to Me like Sodom, And her inhabitants like Gomorrah.” Jeremiah 23:14

“I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy falsely in My name, saying, ‘I had a dream, I had a dream!’”  Jeremiah 23:25

“for I have not sent them,” declares the Lord, “but they prophesy falsely in My name, in order that I may drive you out and that you may perish, you and the prophets who prophesy to you.”  Lamentations 2:14

“Your prophets have seen for you False and foolish visions;  And they have not exposed your iniquity So as to restore you from captivity, But they have seen for you false and misleading oracles.”  Jeremiah 27:15

“Her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord God,’ when the Lord has not spoken.”  Ezekiel 22:28

“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them, ’you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams;  for the Lord your God is testing you to find out if you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.  You shall follow the Lord your God and fear Him;  and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.  But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has counseled rebellion against the Lord your God who brought you from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, to seduce you from the way in which the Lord your God commanded you to walk.  So you shall purge the evil from among you.”  Deuteronomy 13:1-5.

And these are not just bad people.  They introduce “destructive heresies” which can linger past the life of the false teacher.

The destructive heresies can mislead us and cause us to drift and wander away from the truth.  And, if not corrected, the destructive heresies can cause us to perish.

But, there is hope!

Creeds serve as a cleansing agent to purge out such “destructive heresies” and to purify the church.  Creeds also serve as a lighthouse in the dark that can lead us back to the truth.

As one example, and as stated in the Introduction, the Canons of Dordt were “born out of internal controversy in the Reformed Churches of the Netherlands which was occasioned by the rise of the Arminian heresy, the Canons are the expression of the Synod’s judgment concerning the Five Points of the Remonstrance.  This also explains the fact that the Canons are divided into five chapters, maintaining the truths of sovereign predestination, particular atonement, total depravity, irresistible grace, and perseverance of saints.  Because the Canons are an answer to the Five Points of the Remonstrance, they set forth only certain aspects of the truth rather than the whole body of the truth, as do our other confessions.”

There is more hope!

Today’s Scripture assures us that the false prophets will bring “swift destruction upon themselves” and that “their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.”

“Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith.  But they will not make further progress;  for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes’s and Jambres’s folly was also.”  2 Timothy 3:8-9.

“So My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations.  They will have no place in the council of My people, nor will they be written down in the register of the house of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel, that you may know that I am the Lord God.”  Ezekiel 13:9

“‘Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,
In due time their foot will slip;
For the day of their calamity is near,
And the impending things are hastening upon them.’”  Deuteronomy 32:35.

Ultimately, our hope is in our Good Shepherd, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

“I am the good shepherd;  the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.  He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.  He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep.  I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.”  John 10:11-15.

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;  and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish;  and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all;  and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”  John 10:27-29.

“For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.”  1 Peter 2:25

The Word of God

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Peter 1:19-21.

So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.  But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”  2 Peter 1:19-21.

———————

We can trust the Bible a/k/a Scriptures, best described as the Word of God:  “for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”  Verse 21.

Here is part of what The Belgic Confession states:

Article 3:  Of the written Word of God.

We confess that this Word of God was not sent, nor delivered by the will of man, but that holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost, as the apostle Peter saith. And that afterwards God, from a special care, which he has for us and our salvation, commanded his servants, the prophets and apostles, to commit his revealed word to writing; and he himself wrote with his own finger, the two tables of the law. Therefore we call such writings holy and divine Scriptures.

Here is part of what The Westminister Larger Catechism states:

Question 3:  What is the Word of God?

Answer:  The holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, the only rule of faith and obedience.

Question 4:  How does it appear that the Scriptures are the Word of God?

Answer:  The Scriptures manifest themselves to be the Word of God, by their majesty and purity;  by the consent of all the parts, and the scope of the whole, which is to give all glory to God;  by their light and power to convince and convert sinners, to comfort and build up believers unto salvation:  but the Spirit of God bearing witness by and with the Scriptures in the heart of man, is alone able fully to persuade it that they are the very Word of God.

Question 5:  What do the Scriptures principally teach?

Answer:  The Scriptures principally teach,:  What man is to believe concerning God, and:  What duty God requires of man.

Question 6:  What do the Scriptures make known of God?

Answer:  The Scriptures make known: What God is, the persons in the Godhead, his decrees, and the execution of his decrees.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

97 O how love I thy law!  it is my meditation all the day.

98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies:  for they are ever with me.

99 I have more understanding than all my teachers:  for thy testimonies are my meditation.

100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

102 I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.

103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste!  yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  Psalm 119:97-105.  (King James Version).

“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches.  I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”  Revelation 22:16.

Eyewitnesses of His Majesty

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Peter 1:16-18.

“For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.  For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”— and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.”  2 Peter 1:16-18.

———————-

We are eyewitnesses of His majesty.

“and though you have not seen Him (our Lord Jesus Christ), you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,”  1 Peter 1:8

But, you have seen great and awesome things that God has done for you which your eyes have seen.

“He is your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen.”  Deuteronomy 10:21

“Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.”  1 Chronicles 16:24 and Psalm 96:3.

“Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you.”  So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.”  Luke 8:39

“but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;  and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”  Acts 1:8

And, God not only blesses the righteous, God also punishes the wicked who oppress us.

“Then all men will fear,
And they will declare the work of God,
And will consider what He has done.
The righteous man will be glad in the Lord and will take refuge in Him;
And all the upright in heart will glory.”  Psalm 64:9-10.

Reminders

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Peter 1:12-15.

“Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you.  I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.  And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind.”  2 Peter 1:12-15.

———————–

Today’s devotion emphasizes the importance of reminders.  “Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things …”  Verse 12.  “ I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder …”  Verse 13.  “And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind.”  Verse 15.

I will mention three reminders:  Christ, Credible and Faithful Men, and Creeds.  There are more.

First, Christ reminds us of the truth.

Christ is the Head of the His church.  Ephesians 1:22.  Ephesians 5:23.  Colossians 1:18.  Christ will build His church.  Matthew 16:18.  Through the Spirit of truth and His servants, credible and faithful men, Christ teaches us the truth and reminds us of the truth.

“I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world;  they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.”  John 17:6.

“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth;  for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.”  John 16:13

“Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.  And He was saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;  therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.  Go;  behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.”  Luke 10:1-3.

Second, credible and faithful men remind us of the truth.

“But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of the grace that was given me from God,”  Romans 15:15

“Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.  In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy.”  1 Corinthians 4:1-2.

“For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and he will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, just as I teach everywhere in every church.”  1 Corinthians 4:17

“The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”  2 Timothy 2:2

Third, creeds remind us of the truth.

In conclusion, Christ, credible and faithful men, and creeds combine to help remind us of the truth.  My testimony is in the “About Me” section of my web site.  Click here: About me « Reformed Doctrine Daily Devotions  Here is a quote from it.

“In 1977, I moved to Florida to go to law school, and I stayed here in Florida.  I attended and was a member, even a lay leader, in a large range of churches from Assembly of God to Baptist to Calvary Chapel to United Methodist to nondenominational churches and small fellowships.  At first, I thought Reformed Doctrine would be preached in all Christian Protestant churches.  When I heard some strange preaching or teaching, I first thought that the problem was just with that particular minister or teacher.  Eventually, a childhood friend, who now lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan, asked me if I remembered “TULIP” which is also known as the Five Points of Calvinism and the Reformed Doctrine of salvation.  I studied the differences between Calvinism and Arminianism.  That study made me aware that often what bothered me was not just bad preaching or teaching, but rather the problem was caused by bad doctrine (Arminianism) that broadly and deeply affected that church and its denomination which at some time of its history strayed away from Reformed Doctrine rediscovered in the Reformation.  In contrast to this bad doctrine which I encountered, I began to appreciate more the truth, logic, beauty, and simplicity of “TULIP” which was my heritage.  I recognized its importance, because most Protestant denominations do not teach it.  I am now passionate about promoting ”TULIP” a/k/a Reformed Doctrine.”

We are not the “frozen chosen”. We are the eager elect.

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Peter 1:5-11.

Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.  For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.  10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you;  for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;  11 for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.”  2 Peter 1:5-11.

———————–

We should not sit on our laurels, smugly thinking that we are the chosen.  But rather, we should be “applying all diligence” to add these qualities to us.  “Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you;  for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;”  Verse 10.  We are not the “frozen chosen”.

There is help!

Let us remember yesterday’s Scripture.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;  seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”  2 Peter 1:2-3.

The diligence of which we have a duty to exercise has been granted to us.  We don’t need to cast our eyes down and muster up the diligence on our own.  We can look up to God and pray that He gives us the diligence (the will and perseverance) to add these qualities to us.

Moreover, these qualities are not foreign qualities, outside of us.  These qualities pertain to life and godliness, and they have been granted to us.  2 Peter 1:2-3.

“So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling;  for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”  Philippians 2:12-13.

Christ “… gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.”  Titus 2:14

We are the eager elect.

Precious Promises

Today’s devotion comes from 2 Peter 1:4.

“For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.”  2 Peter 1:4.

—————–

By God’s precious promises, we become partakers of the divine nature.  Therefore, we “gold mine” through Scripture, carefully searching for these gold nuggets of precious promises.

And, the “field” in which these gold nuggets exist is the knowledge of God as we learned yesterday in the prior two verses.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;  seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”  2 Peter 1:2-3.

Here are some Practice Principles:

First, we meditate on God’s word.

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.”  Psalm 1:2-3.

Second, we remember God’s word.

“Remember His wonderful deeds which He has done,
His marvels and the judgments from His mouth,
O seed of Israel His servant,
Sons of Jacob, His chosen ones!
He is the Lord our God;
His judgments are in all the earth.
Remember His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded to a thousand generations,”  1 Chronicles 16:12-15.

Third, we do God’s word.

“Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.  But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.  For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;  for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.  But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.”  James 1:21-15.

Here are some Practical Preferences to help us find and remember these precious promises.  They are preferences, because they are not expressly mandated by Scripture, but they are helpful.

First, we remember the key words of the precious promises.  The key words will help us find the precious promises whether we use a printed index or an online keyword search such as the following.  (You may want to save it as a favorite bookmark,)  Click here: BibleGateway.com: Search for a Bible word or phrase in 60 languages and 160 versions.

Second, we remember the book and chapter within which the precious promise is located.  When you consider that there are many precious promises to remember, I have found that if I try to remember all 3 categories (book, chapter, and verse), then I would forget the location altogether, but if I just remembered 2 categories (book and chapter) then I could find the precious promise within that chapter.  I was able to remember many more locations of the many precious promises using that 2 category search rather than the 3 category search.

Third, we write about the precious promises and keep the record.  At first, many times when I discovered a precious promise, I wrote and mailed a letter of the Scripture to my friend Harry.  I kept copies of these letters.  These were my “Letters to Harry”.  Later, I posted the best of them online at my web site.  They became “Gold Mining”.  Click here: Gold Mining « Reformed Doctrine Daily Devotions  I often go back to them, re-read the letter that deals with the subject matter that I want to remember.  It strengthens my faith as I remember God’s word.
