Excellent Things

Today’s devotion comes from Philippians 1:7-11.

“For it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me.  For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.

And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ;  having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”  Philippians 1:7-11.

———————————-

Wow!  Paul considered it all grace:  “both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel”.  And, Paul did humbly not single himself out as the only one receiving grace:  “you all are partakers of grace with me”.  “For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.”

Do we talk like that?!  Do we feel like that?!

But, there is hope!

“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent”.

What are these “excellent things” that we should know, discern, and approve?

We can infer that Paul will at least teach us some of these excellent things in the rest of the Book of Philippians.  So, we will sit up straight and pay attention to find these excellent things as we read through the rest of the Book of Philippians.

But, we also know Scripture contains many more excellent things than just what is mentioned in the Book of Philippians.  Realizing that the author did not need to label everything “excellent”, what are some of the excellent things specifically labeled as “excellent” in Scripture?

Psalm 150:2
“Praise Him for His mighty deeds;  Praise Him according to His excellent greatness.”

Proverbs 22:20
“Have I not written to you excellent things Of counsels and knowledge,”

Proverbs 31:10
“An excellent wife, who can find?  For her worth is far above jewels.”  See also Proverbs 12:4.

Isaiah 12:5
“Praise the LORD in song, for He has done excellent things;  Let this be known throughout the earth.”

1 Corinthians 12:31
“But earnestly desire the greater gifts.  And I show you a still more excellent way.”

Hebrews 1:4
“having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.”

Hebrews 8:6
“But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.”

1 Peter 2:12
“Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.”

Above all, we see the name of Jesus described as excellent.  We also see Jesus’ ministry as described as excellent.  We see praise for God, “for He has done excellent things”.  “Praise Him according to His excellent greatness.”  But, we also see love described in 1 Corinthians 13 as “a still more excellent way.”  We see an “excellent wife”.  And, we see a reminder to “Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles”.  Finally, let us consider Paul’s attitude described in the very first paragraph as “excellent”.

Confidence in God and His Work

Today’s devotion comes from Philippians 1:1-6.

“Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus,

To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons:  Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now.  For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:1-6.

—————————

There was nothing good in us that motivated God in the beginning to elect us and begin His good work within us (remember “Total Depravity”, the “T” of “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism, the Reformed Doctrine of Salvation).  Any later sin or inability within us will not surprise God nor cause God to cease His good work within us. “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

God is not fickle.  ““For I, the LORD, do not change;  therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.” Malachi 3:6.

God does not divorce. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.” Ephesians 5:25-27.

“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.  But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.  For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.” Romans 5:6-10.  In other words, if Christ died for us when we were at our worst, then having done so and forgiven us and cleansed us of all of our sins and reconciled us, then Christ will certainly continue His work within us.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10.

This is God’s work.  Man always thinks it is about himself:  “Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?”  John 6:28.  But, notice Jesus’ reply.  “Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” John 6:29.  It is all about God and His work.

God accomplishes all of His good pleasure.                                                                                                                 “9 “Remember the former things long past,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;
11 Calling a bird of prey from the east,
The man of My purpose from a far country.
Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned it, surely I will do it.”  Isaiah 46:9-11.

In conclusion, this precious truth is called “Preservation of the Saints”, the “P” of “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism, the Reformed Doctrine of Salvation.  “For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;  and these whom He predestined, He also called;  and these whom He called, He also justified;  and these whom He justified, He also glorified.” Romans 8:29-30.

Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Today’s Scripture comes from Ephesians 6:18-23.

“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains;  that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

But that you also may know about my circumstances, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make everything known to you.  I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us, and that he may comfort your hearts.

Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.  Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love.”  Ephesians 6:18-23.

—————————

How much do we know about the condition of fellow saints?  How often do we specifically pray for them?  How often do we follow-up with a praise report?

In today’s Scripture, we read about Paul making provision about disclosing his condition through Tychicus.  We read about Paul asking for specific prayer that “I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak“.  Like Paul, we should disclose our condition to trusted Christians and request specific prayer from them.

A friend and I meet about once a week to read Scripture and pray.  We pick a book of the Bible and then read a chapter a meeting with each of us reading out loud half of the chapter.  We then share specific prayer requests.  He prays for my prayer requests, and I pray for his prayer requests.  Often, our specific prayer requests are for ourselves or members of our family, but sometimes our prayer requests are for other individuals.  It is a good practice that we have developed and done for about 14 years.

My purpose in disclosing this practice is not to infer that it is the best practice nor that we never miss a week of doing it.  But rather, my hope is to provide one example of what can be done to stimulate thoughts as to what could be done to pray more faithfully and more effectively.  It is my hope that the reader both disclose to trusted Christian friends his or her own condition and their own specific request for prayer and that the reader learn about the conditions of other Christian friends and their specific  prayer requests so that the reader can pray for others more faithfully and effectively.

As another example, one of my friends has developed a prayer project for a wide community of friends and uses emails and a web site to inform others of specific prayer needs of individuals within that community and to request prayer for them from the group.  Obviously, these prayer requests are less intimate (specifically disclosing less to avoid personal embarassment), but the prayer requests reach many more people and address more general prayer concerns.

So, whatever practice you use, “be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints”.

And, give praise reports!  Don’t only request prayers;  inform others how God has answered the prayers!  “Rejoice always;  pray without ceasing;  in everything give thanks;  for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.  Notice how “pray without ceasing” is sandwiched between “Rejoice always” and “in everything give thanks“.  We should give thanks and praise God for answered prayers!

Prayer, with both prayer requests and praise reports, is a way of showing “love with faith” which is mentioned in the concluding paragraph of today’s Scripture.  Prayer shows others that you care about them and love them.  Prayer shows faith that you believe God will answer your prayers and help them.  Praise reports develop faith that God will answer prayers.  “Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”  Verse 23.  “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.”  Galatians 6:10

“Put on the full armor of God”

Today’s devotion comes from Ephesians 6:10-17.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.

11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,

15 and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE;

16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17 And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”  Ephesians 6:10-17.

——————————

How do we “be strong in the Lord”?  How do we “Put on the full armor of God”?  How do we “take up the full armor of God”?

Today’s Scripture gives us clues as to how we put on each piece of the armor to be strong in the Lord.  It helps to go in reverse order, starting with the last piece, the sword of the Spirit.

The sword of the Spirit is the word of God, so we take up the sword by reading and meditating on God’s Word.  We also take up the sword by hearing good preaching and teaching.  We also take up the sword by obeying and abiding in God’s word.   “I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.”  1 John 2:14  “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  Hebrews 4:12

THE HELMET OF SALVATION protects the most important part of the body which is the head.  In boxing, the boxer constantly holds his fists in front of his head to protect his head.  Accordingly, we hold up the Reformed Doctrine of Salvation, “TULIP”, the Five Points of Salvation, in front of our minds.  “The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”  And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.  Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.  Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”  Luke 10:17-20.

The shield of faith can “extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one”  By faith, we believe all the promises of God and do not listen to the lies of the devil.  We “are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”  1 Peter 1:5.  “The LORD will protect you from all evil;  He will keep your soul.”  Psalm 121:7  “But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.”  2 Thessalonians 3:3    “He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge;  His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.”  Psalm 91:4

THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE is our shoes.  We walk in them and on them.  We walk in peace.  “How lovely on the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace And brings good news of happiness, Who announces salvation, And says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”  Isaiah 52:7

THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS protects our heart but is also part of our clothing.  “Righteousness guards the one whose way is blameless, But wickedness subverts the sinner.”  Proverbs 13:6  “He put on righteousness like a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head;  And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing And wrapped Himself with zeal as a mantle.”  Isaiah 59:17  “I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.”  Isaiah 61:10

HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH is a process where loose clothing is cinched up tight against the body like with a belt.  It allows one to walk or run without tripping over that excess loose clothing.  We may have many thoughts which come to mind, some of them are bad but some of them are good, but we still need them compressed into manageable sound doctrine.  Reformed creeds cinch up loose random thoughts into tight truth to help us”… lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and … run with endurance the race that is set before us”.  Hebrews 12:1.  .    “[A Good Minister’s Discipline]  In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following.”  1 Timothy 4:6

Rewards

Today’s devotion comes from Ephesians 6:1-9.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise), SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH.

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ;  not by way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.  With good will render service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free.

And masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.”  Ephesians 6:1-9.

——————

First, whatever we do, we should do it well considering that we ultimately serve the Lord.  In other words, we may have supervisors and managers like masters and fathers, but we have Only One Owner and He is Christ Whom we need to ultimately please.

“Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”  Colossians 3:17

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,”  Colossians 3:23

Second, there are rewards for good service:  “knowing that whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free.  “HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise), SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH.”

We may think that we are too good and too mature to need a reward to motivate us, but an expectation of a reward is an element of faith.  “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”  Hebrews 11:6.

Scripture is full of promises of rewards.  We should not ignore promises of rewards nor dismiss such promises of rewards too quickly as only “prosperity gospel”.

“After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you;  Your reward shall be very great.”

Deuteronomy 11:1
[Rewards of Obedience – see particularly verses 8-15]
“You shall therefore love the LORD your God, and always keep His charge, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments.”

Psalm 18:20
“The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness;  According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.”

Psalm 19:11
“Moreover, by them Your servant is warned;  In keeping them there is great reward.”

Psalm 58:11
“And men will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous;  Surely there is a God who judges on earth!”

Psalm 127:3
“Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward.”

Proverbs 3:1
[The Rewards of Wisdom – see the whole chapter]
“My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments;”

“Honor the LORD from your wealth
And from the first of all your produce;
So your barns will be filled with plenty
And your vats will overflow with new wine.”  Proverbs 3:9-10.

Proverbs 13:21
“Adversity pursues sinners, But the righteous will be rewarded with prosperity.”

Proverbs 22:4
“The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD Are riches, honor and life.”

Ecclesiastes 5:18
“Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting:  to eat, to drink and enjoy oneself in all one’s labor in which he toils under the sun during the few years of his life which God has given him; for this is his reward.”

Ecclesiastes 5:19
“Furthermore, as for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, He has also empowered him to eat from them and to receive his reward and rejoice in his labor;  this is the gift of God.”

“Thus says the LORD, “Restrain your voice from weeping And your eyes from tears;  For your work will be rewarded,” declares the LORD, “And they will return from the land of the enemy.”

Malachi 3:10
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.”

Matthew 5:12
“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great;  for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Matthew 6:4
“so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”

Matthew 6:6
“But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”

“He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward;  and he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.”

Matthew 10:42
“And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.”

“Then Peter said to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?”  And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.  And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.”  Matthew 19:27-29.

Luke 6:23

“Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.”

Hebrews 11:26
“considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward.”

2 John 1:8
“Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.”

Revelation 11:18
“And the nations were enraged, and Your wrath came, and the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to reward Your bond-servants the prophets and the saints and those who fear Your name, the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

Revelation 22:12
“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.”

In conclusion, the rewards are given to us as a gift by God’s grace, not as wages earned by us on our own merit.  First, by God’s grace, we are God’s workmanship;  God prepared beforehand those good works for us to do.  Ephesians 2:10.  Second, by God’s grace, God gave us special gifts (or skills) to do those good works.  Ephesians 4:7-13.  Third, by God’s grace, God gave us the willpower to do those good works, and God worked within us to accomplish those good works.  Philippians 2:13.  Fourth, by God’s grace, the rewards are much more generous than what could possibly be proportionately considered by the quantity and quality of our good works (“not worthy to be compared”).  Romans 8:18.  The following Question and Answer 63 of the Heidelberg Catechism provides a fitting summary and conclusion.

Question 63.  What!  do not our good works merit, which yet God will reward in this and in a future life?
Answer.  This reward is not of merit, but of grace.

The Word of God

Today’s devotion comes from Ephesians 5:22-33.

22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.  23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.  24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing;  but that she would be holy and blameless.

28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies.  He who loves his own wife loves himself;   29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,  30 because we are members of His body.  31 FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.  32 This mystery is great;  but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.

33 Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.”  Ephesians 5:22-33.

———————-

There is so much in today’s Scripture about which one could write.  “Limited Atonement” and “Preservation of the Saints”, the “L” and “P” of “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism, the Reformed Doctrine of Salvation” come first to mind.  One could write about the relationship of Christ to His Church being described as the marriage relationship between husband and wife.  One could write about the different roles and duties of a husband and a wife.  And, there are additional profitable things in today’s Scripture upon which to meditate and write.  This introduction not only provides an “excuse” for me to write about one topic among many, this introduction also illustrates the richness of God’s Word.

Today, I want to write about the phrase:  “cleansed her by the washing of water with the word“.  The Word of God cleanses us.  We take a shower or bath every day.  Why don’t we read God’s Word every day?!  And, the Word of God does more than cleanse us.

For today’s devotion, I want us to meditate on the following verses which teach us about the Word of God and what it does for us.  Hopefully, this review will encourage us by what the Word of God can do for us.  Hopefully, this review will motivate us to read God’s Word and meditate upon it and abide in it.

“Not one of the good promises which the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed;  all came to pass.” Joshua 21:45

“As for God, His way is blameless;  The word of the LORD is tried;  He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.”  Psalm 18:30

“In God, whose word I praise, In God I have put my trust;  I shall not be afraid.  What can mere man do to me?”  Psalm 56:4

“The unfolding of Your words gives light;  It gives understanding to the simple.”  Psalm 119:130

“He who gives attention to the word will find good, And blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.”  Proverbs 16:20

“understand what the will of the Lord is”

Today’s devotion comes from Ephesians 5:15-21.

“Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.  So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;  always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;  and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.”  Ephesians 5:15-21.

—————————-

We may naturally feel unable both to “understand what the will of the Lord is” and to do it.  But, for one thing, we can remember the immediately preceding Scripture:  “walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord”.  Ephesians 5:8-9.  “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.”  3 John 1:4  So, we can at least start with a strong commitment and passion to “walk in truth”.

Today’s Scripture also provides a second thing that we can do which is “be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord”.

Putting these two things together, “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”  John 4:24  Obviously, these two things are not an exhaustive list, because today’s Scripture immediately follows these two things with two more things:  “giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;  and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.”

And, even these four things is not a complete list.  “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;  so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”  2 Timothy 3:16-17.

We look back to the beginning of today’s Scripture for further instruction.  “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.”

But, there is hope!

Although we thus use our minds to try to “understand what the will of the Lord is”, we are not alone.  We do not need to depend on ourselves to understand and do the will of God.  We have the Helper, the Holy Spirit.  “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”  John 14:26  “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth;  for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak;  and He will disclose to you what is to come.  He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.  All things that the Father has are Mine;  therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.”  John 16:13-15.
Today’s devotion comes from Ephesians 5:6-14.

6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

7 Therefore do not be partakers with them;

8 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord;  walk as children of Light

9 (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth),

10 trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;

12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.

13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.

14 For this reason it says,

“Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”  Ephesians 5:6-14.

——————————————-

Christ is the Light of the world.

“THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT, AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH, UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED.”  Matthew 4:16

“For my eyes have seen Your salvation,
Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
A LIGHT OF REVELATION TO THE GENTILES,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”  Luke 2:30-32.

“In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.”  John 1:4

“There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.”  John 1:9

“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world;  he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”  John 8:12

“The LORD is righteous within her;  He will do no injustice.  Every morning He brings His justice to light;  He does not fail.  But the unjust knows no shame.”  Zephaniah 3:5

“While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.”  These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them.”  John 12:36

“I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.”  John 12:46

“For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”  2 Corinthians 4:6

“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.”  James 1:17

In the Lord, we are “children of Light”:  “for you are all sons of light and sons of day.  We are not of night nor of darkness;”  1 Thessalonians 5:5  We are “giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.”  Colossians 1:12

“But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”  1 Peter 2:9

“You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;  nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”  Matthew 5:14-16.

So, let us “walk as children of Light”:  “trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord”.  Verse 8-10.

“Do all things without grumbling or disputing;  so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.”  Philippians 2:14-16.

“The night is almost gone, and the day is near.  Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.”  Romans 13:12

“This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.  For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.  But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”  John 3:19-21.

“This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.  If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;  but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”  1 John 1:5-7.

“On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining.  The one who says he is in the Light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now.  The one who loves his brother abides in the Light and there is no cause for stumbling in him.  But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.”  1 John 2:9-11.

In Heaven, we will be illumined by the Lord God, and there will no longer be any night.

“And there will no longer be any night;  and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever.”  Revelation 22:5

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children”

Today’s devotion comes from Ephesians 5:1-5.

1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;

2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

3 But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints;

4 and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

5 For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”  Ephesians 5:1-5.

———————–

The reason why we are able to be imitators of God is that we have this “new self” described in the prior chapter.  The “Therefore” in verse 1 is based on our “new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.”  See Ephesians 4:24.

We feel uneasy when we hear filthy jokes, because of this “new self”.  We should not quench that feeling of uneasiness, “and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.”  Verse 4.

Do we want to be like the one who told the joke or like the One Who loved us and gave Himself up for us?

“For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”  Colossians 1:13-14.

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children”.

After being washed clean by Christ’s blood, do we want to return to the filth of immorality and impurity?

“For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.  For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them.  It has happened to them according to the true proverb, “A DOG RETURNS TO ITS OWN VOMIT,” and, “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.”  2 Peter 2:20-22.

“For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”  Verse 5.

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children”.

In our natural world, children imitate their parents.  How much more in the spiritual world should we children imitate our Father in Heaven?!  “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”  Matthew 5:48

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;  and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.”  Verses 1 and 2.

Today’s devotion comes from Ephesians 4:24-32.

24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth

25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another.

26 BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN;  do not let the sun go down on your anger,

27 and do not give the devil an opportunity.

28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.

29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”  Ephesians 4:24-32.

—————————-

Today’s Scripture provides practical advice on how to live the Christian life.  But, verse 24 is included to remind us that we are able to live out this righteous and holy life through “the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth”.  So, today’s Scripture is more of a “Therefore” of what we do based on “the new self”, rather than an independent list of things that we should do, or even can do, through our own strength, our own flesh.

The new self speaks truth, because the new self has “been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth”.

The new self does not let the sun go down on its anger nor gives the devil an opportunity nor steals nor is bitter, wrathful, clamorous, slanderous, malicious, nor otherwise grieves the Holy Spirit of God, because the new self has “been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth”.

The new self edifies others, is kind to one another, tender-hearted, and forgives each other, because the new self has “been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth”.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;  against such things there is no law.  Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”  Galatians 5:22-24.  “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.”  Galatians 5:16.

Even as good as it may be to have new tools to do what is right, there is something better.  Today’s Scripture teaches us that our new self was created “in the likeness of God”.  We do what is right, because of who we are:  “a new self” “conformed to the image of His Son”.  “For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;  and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.”  Romans 8:29-30.

So, as we celebrate Easter today, let us view our “new self” as we imagine Christ stepping out of the death, decay, and darkness of that tomb into the dawn daylight and fresh air of that first Easter Sunday morning.  “Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.”  Romans 6:4
