“Give, and it will be given to you.”

Today’s devotion covers Luke 6:38.

“Give, and it will be given to you.  They will pour into your lap a good measure–pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”  Luke 6:38.

It takes faith to give.  Every sense that we have urges us to not give.  Our senses shout to us in common sense:  “If you give, then you will have less, maybe not enough to survive!”   .

But, this Scripture tells us differently.  “Give, and it will be given to you.”

It took faith for the widow of Zarephath to make a little bread cake for Elijah when she had no bread, only a handful of flour in the bowl and a little oil in the jar.  Every sense that she had urged her to not give, but she listened to Elijah.  “So she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and she and he and her household ate for many days.  The bowl of flour was not exhausted nor did the jar of oil become empty, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke through Elijah.”  1 Kings 17:15-16.

So, what is this faith?

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.  For by it the men of old gained approval.”  Hebrews 1:1-2.  (Emphasis added.)  “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”  Hebrews 11:6.  (Emphasis added.)

For what things do we hope?

What reward do we seek?

Abel sought the testimony that he was righteous.  Hebrews 11:4.

Enoch sought the witness that he was pleasing to God. Hebrews 11:5.

Noah sought the salvation of his household.  Hebrews 11:7.

Abraham was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.  Hebrews 11:10.

Sarah wanted to conceive and give birth and to have as many descendants as the stars of the heaven.  Hebrews 11:11-12.

What does the extravagance of such a overflowing return in this Scripture tell us about our Lord?

This Scripture reminds us of His miracle at the wedding at Cana in John Chapter 2.  Jesus made 120 gallons of great wine.  How many of us dare to think that we want to invite Him to our next party?!

This Scripture reminds us of Luke 19:17:  “And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.’  How many of us dare to think that we want to work for such a lord?!

This Scripture reminds us of eternal life with our Lord.  “You will make known to me the path of life;  In Your presence is fullness of joy;  In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”  Psalm 16:11  How many of us dare to think that we want such fullness of joy and pleasures forever in the presence of our Lord?!
