“the Lord of the harvest”

Today’s devotion is Luke 10:1-12.  Here is a link to it –

This Scripture may seem familiar to you.  It may seem that we just covered it.  Indeed, it is very similar to Luke 9:1-6.  You can check out my devotion on this Luke 9 passage –

For this Luke 10 passage, we will focus on verses 1 and 2.  “Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.  And He was saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;  therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”  Luke 10:1-2.

The first thing that I thought was interesting was the increase in the number of missionaries from 12 in Luke 9 to 70 here in Luke 10.  This both shows the growth in the missionary effort, and it is also consistent with the main message of this two verses:  “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;  therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

I think we can readily understand the truth of this message.  Many of us can testify as to how few laborers there are “in our group”, in whatever Christian service group that we are, and how much work is needed to be done.  We can be discouraged and even dismayed.

However, let us focus on this “Lord of the harvest”.  He is Almighty God.

Consider Isaiah 46:9-11:
“Remember the former things long past,
         For I am God, and there is no other;
         I am God, and there is no one like Me,
    10  Declaring the end from the beginning,
         And from ancient times things which have not been done,
         Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
         And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’
;
    11  Calling a bird of prey from the east,
         The man of My purpose from a far country
         Truly I have spoken;  truly I will bring it to pass.
         I have planned it, surely I will do it.”

We are reminded of John 6:28-29:
28  Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?”

 29  Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”

The Lord of the harvest is at work!

He assures us:  “‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’.  “I have planned it, surely I will do it.”

Yes, we are commanded to pray.  Yes, we are commanded to work.  But, it is “the Lord of the harvest” Who “is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure”.  Philippians 2:13.
