“the key of knowledge”

Today’s devotion is Luke 11:52.

“Woe to you lawyers!  For you have taken away the key of knowledge;  you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”  Luke 11:52.

How wonderful it is to find that key of knowledge!

How wonderful it is to use that key of knowledge to enter the kingdom of heaven!

How wonderful it is to share that key of knowledge with others and help them to enter that kingdom of heaven!

So, what is that key of knowledge?

As we think about that question, it may help to start with excluding things that the key of knowledge is not

From the very beginning, in Genesis chapter 2, we see that the key of knowledge is not the knowledge of good and evil.

The key of knowledge is not “the Law”.  “… For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.”  Galatians 3:21.

The key of knowledge is not knowledge of man.  “O LORD, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?  Or the son of man, that You think of him?  Man is like a mere breath;  His days are like a passing shadow.”  Psalm 144:2-4.

The key of knowledge is not even zeal for God.  “For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge.  For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.”  Romans 10:2-3.

The key of knowledge is not even faithful and steadfast continual learning.  There are those who are “always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”  2 Timothy 3:7

But rather, the key of knowledge is knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord

“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;  seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.  For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.”  2 Peter 1:2-4.  (Emphasis added.)
