“You have granted me life and lovingkindness; And Your care has preserved my spirit.”

Today’s devotion comes from Psalm chapter 140.  Here is a link to this chapter –

I quote only the following verses.

“Rescue me, O Lord, from evil men;
Preserve me from violent men
2 Who devise evil things in their hearts;
They continually stir up wars.
3 They sharpen their tongues as a serpent;
Poison of a viper is under their lips.  Selah.

4 Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
Preserve me from violent men
Who have purposed to trip up my feet.
5 The proud have hidden a trap for me, and cords;
They have spread a net by the wayside;
They have set snares for me.  Selah.”  Psalm 140:1-5.

David was pursued by violent and evil men and asked God to rescue him and preserve him.  We all are pursued by sin and need God to rescue us and preserves us.

But, there is hope!

God indeed does rescue us and preserve us as summarized by Reformed Doctrine in “Preservation of the Saints”, the “P” of “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism, the Reformed Doctrine of Salvation.

Article 3.  By reason of these remains of indwelling sin, and the temptations of sin and of the world, those who are converted could not persevere in a state of grace, if left to their own strength.  But God is faithful, who having conferred grace, mercifully confirms, and powerfully preserves them herein, even to the end.  FIFTH HEAD OF DOCTRINE Of the Perseverance of the Saints.  Canons of Dordt.

“‘You have granted me life and lovingkindness;
And Your care has preserved my spirit.”  Job 10:12.

“You, O Lord, will keep them;
You will preserve him from this generation forever.”  Psalm 12:7.

23 O love the Lord, all you His godly ones!
The Lord preserves the faithful
And fully recompenses the proud doer.
24 Be strong and let your heart take courage,
All you who hope in the Lord.”  Psalm 31:23-24.

“You are my hiding place;  You preserve me from trouble;
You surround me with songs of deliverance.  Selah.”  Psalm 32:7.

“For the Lord loves justice
And does not forsake His godly ones;
They are preserved forever,
But the descendants of the wicked will be cut off.”  Psalm 37:28.

“You, O Lord, will not withhold Your compassion from me;
Your lovingkindness and Your truth will continually preserve me.”  Psalm 40:11.

10 Hate evil, you who love the Lord,
Who preserves the souls of His godly ones;
He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown like seed for the righteous
And gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Be glad in the Lord, you righteous ones,
And give thanks to His holy name.”  Psalm 97:10-12.

“Guarding the paths of justice,
And He preserves the way of His godly ones.”  Proverbs 2:8.

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely;  and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.”  1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.
