Today’s devotion comes from Psalm 69:1-4. Due to the length of this devotion and the importance of remembering God’s promises and God’s specific deliverances of us in our past, we will pause a few days to meditate on today’s devotion. The next devotion, God willing, will be on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
“Save me, O God,
For the waters have threatened my life.
2 I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters, and a flood overflows me.
3 I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched;
My eyes fail while I wait for my God.
4 Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head;
Those who would destroy me are powerful, being wrongfully my enemies;
What I did not steal, I then have to restore.” Psalm 69:1-4.

When we feel overwhelmed and weary, it is good to remember God’s promises.
“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.” 2 Peter 1:2-4.
Sometimes, God presented those promises to us for our review to preserve us just before we experienced such overwhelmed feelings. For example, just before today’s Scripture, in the prior chapter, we read the following.
“19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden,
The God who is our salvation. Selah.
20 God is to us a God of deliverances;
And to GOD the Lord belong escapes from death.
21 Surely God will shatter the head of His enemies,
The hairy crown of him who goes on in his guilty deeds.” Psalm 68:19-21.
Sometimes, we need to go further back in our memory and search Scriptures more.
You may have your own ways of doing it.
But even when you cannot remember the whole verses or where it is located, you may remember key words from one of your favorite verses. You can use a Bible ap like https://www.biblegateway.com/ and do a search. For example, you may remember only the key words “cast” and “burden”, but you can enter both words for a more narrow search than using one word and come up with the following Scripture. And, you may only be looking for one verse such as verse 22 below but see the following verse 23 which may also help you.
“22 Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
23 But You, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction;
Men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days.
But I will trust in You.” Psalm 55:22-23.
There are other good resources that you can use. For example, at my web site, there are “Links” at my web site –https://reformeddoctrine.com/ that are located in the right margin. You may not be able to see the “Links” on a small cell phone. You may need a Desktop computer or at least a laptop computer to show them where they should appear in the right margin. But, there are topics like “Anxiety and Worry” that you can click on to view many Scriptures, promises of God, that can help. Here is a direct link to that “Anxiety and Worry” link – https://reformeddoctrine.com/2026/05/03/the-righteous-cry-and-the-lord-hears-and-delivers-them-out-of-all-their-troubles-7/
It is also good to remember your specific experiences of the the LORD delivering you.
“11 I shall remember the deeds of the LORD;
Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.
12 I will meditate on all Your work
And muse on Your deeds.
13 Your way, O God, is holy;
What god is great like our God?
14 You are the God who works wonders;
You have made known Your strength among the peoples.
15 You have by Your power redeemed Your people,
The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.” Psalm 77:11-15.
It is easier for you to remember God’s deliverance of you if you write down what happened to you while it is fresh in your memory. You do not need to use a web site to do so; you can write them down on paper. For example, in the 1990’s, I wrote letters to my best friend, Harry Sieplinga, about my meditations on God’s Word and my attempts to apply it to my struggles in life during that time. For a long time, I just had copies of those letters that I could read to remember how the LORD delivered me.
Later, I did put some of these “Letters to Harry” in my web site under the Headnote aka Page “Gold Mining” that is at the top of my web site and is in the main menu that you can easily access even through a small cell phone.
We can certainly pray.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7.
I will close this devotion with one of my favorite Scriptures that can help us when we feel overwhelmed and weary.
“15 The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous
And His ears are open to their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against evildoers,
To cut off the memory of them from the earth.
17 The righteous cry, and the LORD hears
And delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
But the LORD delivers him out of them all.
20 He keeps all his bones,
Not one of them is broken.
21 Evil shall slay the wicked,
And those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The LORD redeems the soul of His servants,
And none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.” Psalm 34:15-22.
