“And He was numbered with transgressors.”

Today’s devotion covers Mark 15:22-41 which covers the historical account of the crucifixion of Jesus.  There is so much that could be subject for a devotion.  We will focus on verses 27 and 28.

They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left.  [And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”]”  Mark 15:27-28.

One Old Testament Scripture which prophesied Jesus being numbered with transgressors is Isaiah 53:12:
“Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong;  Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.”  (Emphasis added.)

Isaiah 53:12 does not only prophesy that Jesus “was numbered with the transgressors”, it also explains the meaning of that event:  “Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.”

It is interesting to note that this prophesy is so strong and so certain that the following verbs are put in past tense:  “numbered”, “bore”, and “interceded” which is like “Declaring the end from the beginning”.  God will fulfill all Scripture.  “Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.  I have planned it, surely I will do it.”
 “10  Declaring the end from the beginning,
         And from ancient times things which have not been done,
         Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
         And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;
    11  Calling a bird of prey from the east,
         The man of My purpose from a far country
         Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
         I have planned it, surely I will do it.”  Isaiah 46:11.
And, if there was any one event that was most certainly going to be fulfilled, it would be the crucifixion of Jesus, the central point of God’s purpose.

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”  2 Corinthians 5:21
