“rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”

Today’s devotion is Luke 10:17-20.

17  The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”

18  And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.

19  “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.

20  “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”  Luke 10:17-20.  (Emphasis added.)

There can be many accomplishments which can give us joy.  But, in comparison to salvation, this Scripture tells us to not even rejoice in our accomplishments, but rather this Scripture tells us to rejoice that our names are recorded in heaven.

And, this salvation is not described in terms of something that we accomplished.  But rather, this salvation is described in terms of something done for us by God:  “your names are recorded in heaven”.

We are reminded of Ephesians 1:3-4.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.”  Ephesians 1:3-4.

In conclusion, this is a summary of Reformed Doctrine.  It is first a focus and a rejoicing in the sovereignty and majesty of God.  It is secondly a focus and a rejoicing in God’s salvation of us through election.  God “chose us before the foundation of the world”.  God “predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ”.  Rejoice “your names are recorded in heaven”.
