Eternal Life: What is this eternal life?

Today’s devotion is John 5:24-29.

24  “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

 25  “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

 26  “For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;

 27  and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.

 28  “Do not marvel at this;  for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,

 29  and will come forth;  those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.”  John 5:24-29.

What is this eternal life?  Just because we cannot comprehensively list all of the glorious elements does not mean that we should not at least consider some of the elements or benefits.

It is forgiveness.

“1  How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
         Whose sin is covered!
    How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity,
         And in whose spirit there is no deceit!
    When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away
         Through my groaning all day long.
    For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;
         My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah.
    I acknowledged my sin to You,
         And my iniquity I did not hide;
         I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD”;
         And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah.
    Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You in a time when You may be found;
         Surely in a flood of great waters they will not reach him.
    You are my hiding place;  You preserve me from trouble;
         You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.
    I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go;
         I will counsel you with My eye upon you.
    Do not be as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding,
         Whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check,
         Otherwise they will not come near to you.
    10  Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
         But he who trusts in the LORD, lovingkindness shall surround him.
    11  Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous ones;
         And shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.”  Psalm 32:1-11.

It is righteousness.

Romans 5:17
“For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.”

It is knowing God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Spirit (the Holy Spirit), and it is fellowship with them.

John 17:3
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

1 John 5:20
“And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true;  and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ.  This is the true God and eternal life.”

1 Corinthians 1:9
God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

2 Corinthians 13:14
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.”

It is joy and peace.

Psalm 16:11
“You will make known to me the path of life;  In Your presence is fullness of joy;  In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”

Isaiah 55:12
“For you will go out with joy And be led forth with peace;  The mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you, And all the trees of the field will clap their hands.”

Romans 14:17
“for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 15:13
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Galatians 5:22
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”

It is power and boldness.

but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”  Acts 1:9.

2 Timothy 1:7
“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.”

Psalm 138:3
“On the day I called, You answered me;  You made me bold with strength in my soul.”

1 Samuel 2:1
“Then Hannah prayed and said,”My heart exults in the LORD; My horn is exalted in the LORD, My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation.”

Proverbs 28:1
“The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, But the righteous are bold as a lion.”

Acts 4:31
“And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.”

2 Corinthians 3:12
“Therefore having such a hope, we use great boldness in our speech,”

Ephesians 3:12
“in whom we have boldness and confident access through faith in Him.”

It is love.

1 John 3:14
We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.

“By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”  John 13:35.

Romans 5:5
“and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

1 John 4:19
“We love, because He first loved us.”

It is even life to our mortal bodies.

Romans 8:11
“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”

Psalm 41:3
“The LORD will sustain him upon his sickbed;  In his illness, You restore him to health.”

Psalm 103:3
“Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases;”

Proverbs 4:22
“For they are life to those who find them And health to all their body.”

Jeremiah 33:6
‘Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them; and I will reveal to them an abundance of peace and truth.”

Malachi 4:2
“But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall.

It is Heaven also called Paradise.

Hebrews 11:16
“But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one.  Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.”

“In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you;  for I go to prepare a place for you.”  John 14:2.

1 Corinthians 2:9
“but just as it is written,” THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD,AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN,ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.”

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth;  for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.  And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes;  and there will no longer be any death;  there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”  Revelation 21:1-4.
