“In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself”

Today’s devotion comes from John 19:25-27.
 
“25  Therefore the soldiers did these things.  But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 
                                        
 26  When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
                                      

 27  Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!”  From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.”  John 19:25-27.

This Scripture reminds me of the unconditional covenant wherein the Holy Trinity takes the Elect into Their own household, Their family of fellowship.  “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God‘s household,”  Ephesians 2:19

“remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.  But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”  Ephesians 2:12-13. 

In a sense, John (the disciple whom Jesus loved) adopted Mary, the mother of Jesus.  In a sense, we too have been adopted by God.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.”  Ephesians 1:3-6.
