“trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.”

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Corinthians 10:1-5.

1  For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea;

2  and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

3  and all ate the same spiritual food;

4  and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them;  and the rock was Christ.

5  Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased;  for they were laid low in the wilderness.”  1 Corinthians 10:1-5.

We may belong to the right denomination.  We may belong to a good church.  We may be raised in a  Christian community and in a Christian family.  We may hear good preaching and may read the Bible.  But, there may be some in our group who do not please God.

Who pleases God?

Scripture teaches us that God is only pleased with true believers, those whom He has elected and made alive and filled with His Spirit.

“For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God;  for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do soand those who are in the flesh cannot please God.  However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.  …”  Romans 8:6-8.

But, the discussion does not end there.  We are commanded to walk as children of the Light “trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.”  Ephesians 5:10

“Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.”  2 Corinthians 5:9

Here are some things that Scripture teaches us that please God.  This list is certainly does not contain all of the things that please God.  We should be diligent and search Scriptures “trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.”  Ephesians 5:10.

“Let my meditation be pleasing to Him;  As for me, I shall be glad in the LORD.”  Psalm 104:34

Faith pleases God.  “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”  Hebrews 11:6.

Obedience pleases God.  “Samuel said, “ Has the LORD as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the LORD?  Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.”  1 Samuel 15:22  “Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.”  Colossians 3:20

Humility pleases God.  “But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”  Submit therefore to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.  Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  Be miserable and mourn and weep;  let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.  Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”  James 4:6-10.  “He has told you, O man, what is good;  And what does the LORD require of you  But to do justice, to love kindness,  And to walk humbly with your God?”  Micah 6:8

Increasing in the knowledge of God pleases God.  “For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;  strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience;  joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.”  Colossians 1:9-12.

Believing in Jesus and loving one another please God.  “Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;  and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.   This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.”  1 John 3:21-23.

Doing good and sharing please God.  “And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”  Hebrews 13:16.

Praising God pleases God.  “Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.”  Hebrews 13:15.

Prayers please God.  “Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a golden censer;  and much incense was given to him, so that he might add it to the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar which was before the throne.  And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God out of the angel’s hand.”  Revelation 8:3-4.

Offerings please God.  “Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.”  Malachi 3:4  “But I have received everything in full and have an abundance; I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus what you have sent, a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God.”  Philippians 4:18

Who can know all the things that please God?!  Who can do all the things that please God?!

But, there is hope!

God works within us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ in us.

“Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever.  Amen.”  Hebrews 13:20-21.
