“His choice of you”

Today’s devotion comes from 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5.

“Paul and Silvanus and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:  Grace to you and peace.

We give thanks to God always for all of you, making mention of you in our prayers;  constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father, knowing, brethren beloved by God, His choice of you;  for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction;  just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.”  1 Thessalonians 1:1-5.

Reformed Doctrine a/k/a Calvinism teaches “Unconditional Election”, the “U” in “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism.  “His choice of you” in today’s Scripture is one exhibit of this “Unconditional Election”.  Another exhibit is Ephesians 1:4-5:  “just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,”

God’s choice of us is the basis of our salvation.  Scripture is filled with exhibits of God’s election.  Election is one of the central doctrines in Scripture.

Deuteronomy 4:37
“Because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their descendants after them. And He personally brought you from Egypt by His great power,”

Romans 11:7
“What then?  What Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened;”

1 Corinthians 1:27
“but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong,”

Colossians 3:12

“These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.”

How can we not joyfully embrace “Unconditional Election” which is our only “chance” for salvation?!

In conclusion, Psalm 33:1-12 puts it all together.  It speaks of our joy and praise, God’s love of righteousness and justice and lovingkindness, God’s eternal and irrevocable counsel and plans, and the blessedness of His chosen people.

“1 Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones;
Praise is becoming to the upright.
2 Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a harp of ten strings.
3 Sing to Him a new song;
Play skillfully with a shout of joy.
4 For the word of the Lord is upright,
And all His work is done in faithfulness.
5 He loves righteousness and justice;
The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And by the breath of His mouth all their host.
7 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap;
He lays up the deeps in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
9 For He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it stood fast.
10 The Lord nullifies the counsel of the nations;
He frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The plans of His heart from generation to generation.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance
.”  Psalm 33:1-12.
