A Vapor, a Voice, and a Victory

Today’s devotion comes from James 4:13-16.

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.”  14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow.  You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.  15 Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”  16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance;  all such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.”  James 4:13-16.

“Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow.  You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.”  Verse 14.

A voice says, “Call out.”
Then he answered, “What shall I call out?”
All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
When the breath of the Lord blows upon it;
Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.”  Isaiah 40:6-8.

“But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory.  O death, where is your victory?  O death, where is your sting?”  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;  but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  1 Corinthians 15:54-57.
