“Take my instruction and not silver, And knowledge rather than choicest gold.”

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 8:1-11.

“Does not wisdom call,
And understanding lift up her voice?
2 On top of the heights beside the way,
Where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
3 Beside the gates, at the opening to the city,
At the entrance of the doors, she cries out:
4 “To you, O men, I call,
And my voice is to the sons of men.
5 “O naive ones, understand prudence;
And, O fools, understand wisdom.
6 “Listen, for I will speak noble things;
And the opening of my lips will reveal right things.
7 “For my mouth will utter truth;
And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8 “All the utterances of my mouth are in righteousness;
There is nothing crooked or perverted in them.
9 “They are all straightforward to him who understands,
And right to those who find knowledge.
10 “Take my instruction and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choicest gold.
11 “For wisdom is better than jewels;
And all desirable things cannot compare with her.”  Proverbs 8:1-11.

There is too much thought and talk about acquiring money.

There is too little thought and talk about acquiring wisdom and understanding.

And yet, Scripture exhorts us that “…  wisdom is better than jewels; And all desirable things cannot compare with her.”  Verse 11.

“14 For her profit is better than the profit of silver
And her gain better than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than jewels;
And nothing you desire compares with her.
16 Long life is in her right hand;
In her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are pleasant ways
And all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who hold her fast.”  Proverbs 3:14-18.

Silver and gold are hidden and buried in the hills.

But, wisdom and understanding are open and offered to all.  They are printed on every page of God’s Word, the Bible.  They are preached in the churches and taught in the Christian homes.  They are lived out openly everywhere by righteous men and women.  They are spectacularly displayed in every star and every blade of grass in God’s creation.

“Does not wisdom call,
And understanding lift up her voice?
2 On top of the heights beside the way,
Where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
3 Beside the gates, at the opening to the city,
At the entrance of the doors, she cries out:
4 “To you, O men, I call,
And my voice is to the sons of men.”  Verses 1-4.

“Take my instruction and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choicest gold.”  Verse 10.
