“So that your trust may be in the Lord, I have taught you today, even you.”

Today’s devotion comes from Proverbs 22:17-29.

“17 Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise,
And apply your mind to my knowledge;
18 For it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,
That they may be ready on your lips.
19 So that your trust may be in the Lord,
I have taught you today, even you.
20 Have I not written to you excellent things
Of counsels and knowledge,
21 To make you know the certainty of the words of truth
That you may correctly answer him who sent you?

22 Do not rob the poor because he is poor,
Or crush the afflicted at the gate;
23 For the Lord will plead their case
And take the life of those who rob them.
24 Do not associate with a man given to anger;
Or go with a hot-tempered man,
25 Or you will learn his ways
And find a snare for yourself.
26 Do not be among those who give pledges,
Among those who become guarantors for debts.
27 If you have nothing with which to pay,
Why should he take your bed from under you?
28 Do not move the ancient boundary
Which your fathers have set.
29 Do you see a man skilled in his work?
He will stand before kings;
He will not stand before obscure men.”  Proverbs 22:17-29.

“So that your trust may be in the Lord,
I have taught you today, even you.”  Verse 19.

Other doctrine teaches the qualities and works of man to build up faith in man so that we trust man more.

But, Reformed Doctrine teaches the qualities and works of God to build up faith in God so that we trust God more.

There are many sermons that sound good, but at the end of it, did you find yourself thinking more about the qualities and works of man or more about the qualities and works of God?

Did you fret about what man may do?  Or was your mind peaceful, fixed on the LORD?

“Do not fret because of evildoers,
Be not envious toward wrongdoers.
2 For they will wither quickly like the grass
And fade like the green herb.
3 Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.”  Psalm 37:1-3.

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord
Than to trust in man.”  Psalm 118:8.

“He who gives attention to the word will find good,
And blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.”  Proverbs 16:20.

“The fear of man brings a snare,
But he who trusts in the Lord will be exalted.”  Proverbs 29:25.

“3 “The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace,
Because he trusts in You.
4 “Trust in the Lord forever,
For in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock.”  Isaiah 26:4.

“5 Thus says the Lord,
“Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind
And makes flesh his strength,
And whose heart turns away from the Lord.
6 “For he will be like a bush in the desert
And will not see when prosperity comes,
But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness,
A land of salt without inhabitant.
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord
And whose trust is the Lord.
8 “For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream
And will not fear when the heat comes;
But its leaves will be green,
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit.”  Jeremiah 17:5-8.
