“You are the salt of the earth” – “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket”

Today’s devotion comes from Matthew 5:13-16.

“You are the salt of the earth;  but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.

“You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;  nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”  Matthew 5:13-16.

Salt and light are distinctive.  They have qualities that make them stand out as being different than others.

Other doctrine seek to be like every other doctrine, so as to be tolerant with everyone else and not offend anyone else, and other doctrine often end up seeking and being the lowest common denominator with other doctrine.

But, Reformed Doctrine embraces its distinctiveness and clearly shows its distinction to others.

Other doctrine tries to hide God’s sovereignty in salvation, predestination, and election under a basket.

But, Reformed Doctrine holds forth TULIP as a lighthouse, a beautiful doctrine of salvation, for all to see.

Other doctrine is based on man’s frail and fleeting free will and ends up corrupted.

But, Reformed Doctrine is like salt which has the quality of preserving.  Reformed Doctrine is based on the incorruptible God and His sovereignty which obtains and preserves the salvation of His elect.

Other doctrine seek to be part of everyone else.

“But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR GOD’S OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;  for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD;  you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.”  1 Peter 2:9-10.
