New wine and fresh wineskins: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature” – “we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.”

Today’s devotion comes from Mark 2:21-22.

“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment;  otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results.  No one puts new wine into old wineskins;  otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well;  but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”  Mark 2:21-22.

An old garment in today’s Scripture is like those who are under the Law.  And, the Holy Spirit is like an unshrunk cloth.  Like unshrunk cloth is not patched on an old garment, we first were released from the Law, made like a new garment so to speak, before we were patched with the Holy Spirit so to speak, and then we start serving God in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the Law.

“But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.”  Romans 7:6.

“Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.  For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.”  Romans 7:4-5.

The new wine in today’s Scripture is like the Holy Spirit.  Fresh wineskins are like us as new creatures in Christ.  Like new wine does not go into old wineskins, the Holy Spirit does not go into the unsaved, the unregenerated.  Like new wine goes into fresh wineskins, the Holy Spirit goes into those new creatures in Christ who are prepared to receive the Holy Spirit, and then we start serving God in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the Law.

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature;  the old things passed away;  behold, new things have come.”  2 Corinthians 5:17.

Circumcision in the following concluding Scripture represents the Law.  All that matters is being a new creation in Christ.

“For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.”  Galatians 6:15.
