“the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,”

Today’s devotion comes from Luke 16:16-17.

“The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John;  since that time the gospel of the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.  But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.” Luke 16:16-17.

The Law and the Prophets proclaimed full and strict obedience to the Law in order to be saved.

The gospel of the kingdom of God preached the good news of salvation by faith in Christ, and everyone tried to force their way into the kingdom as if they could obtain easy forgiveness or easy grace without any obedience of the Law, as if the Law was set aside.

But, the Law was not simply set aside.

Christ fulfilled the requirements of the Law for God’s elect.  “For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did:  sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”  Romans 8:3-4.

By Christ’s obedience to the Law for God’s elect, God’s elect were made righteous as if they perfectly obeyed the Law themselves.  “For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.”  Romans 5:19.

In summary, the meaning of verse 17 (“But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.”) is that the Law will be fulfilled one way for the elect and fulfilled another way for the non-elect by the time that heaven and earth pass away.  The Law will be fulfilled by leading all God’s elect to Christ and thereby bringing all of them into the kingdom of God (Galatians 3:24-25), and the Law will be fulfilled by closing every mouth of the non-elect and holding every one of them accountable to God (Romans 3:19).  “… the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,”  2 Peter 2:9.
