“To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.”

Today’s devotion comes from John 16:1-12.  Here is a link to this Scripture – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+16&version=NASB

I quote only the following verses.

“And He (the Holy Spirit, our Helper), when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;  concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;  and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;  and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.”  John 16:8-11.

The Holy Spirit, our Helper, convicts the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

I planned on skipping this Scripture and going directly to the following section about how the Holy Spirit helps us by guiding us into all the truth, because this section is both difficult to understand and so convicting.

But then, I considered that generally there are two parts to our salvation.  First, we are saved from our enemies.  They must be convicted and punished.  Second, we receive guidance and other blessings.

Consider the following Scriptures which generally has two parts of salvation.

“The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked,
But He blesses the dwelling of the righteous.”  Proverbs 3:33.

“What the wicked fears will come upon him,
But the desire of the righteous will be granted.”  Proverbs 10:24.

“The wicked are overthrown and are no more,
But the house of the righteous will stand.”  Proverbs 12:7.

“… the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,”  2 Peter 2:9.

“46 The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock;
And exalted be the God of my salvation,
47 The God who executes vengeance for me,
And subdues peoples under me.
48 He delivers me from my enemies;
Surely You lift me above those who rise up against me;
You rescue me from the violent man.
49 Therefore I will give thanks to You among the nations, O LORD,
And I will sing praises to Your name.
50 He gives great deliverance to His king,
And shows lovingkindness to His anointed,
To David and his descendants forever.”  Psalm 18:46-50.

“51 “He has done mighty deeds with His arm;
He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart.
52 “He has brought down rulers from their thrones,
And has exalted those who were humble.
53 “HE HAS FILLED THE HUNGRY WITH GOOD THINGS;
And sent away the rich empty-handed.”  Luke 1:51-53.

“71 Salvation from our enemies,
And from the hand of all who hate us;
72 To show mercy toward our fathers,
And to remember His holy covenant,
73 The oath which He swore to Abraham our father,
74 To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies,
Might serve Him without fear,
75 In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.”  Luke 1:71-75.
