Today’s devotion comes from Genesis 1:14-19.
“Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.” Genesis 1:14-19.
——————-
Today, we read twice of the purpose of the sun, stars, and other lights in the expanse of the heavens: “to give light on the earth”.
Sometimes, when people look at the stars at night, they comment on how small and insignificant the earth is among the billions of stars in a vast universe. In a sense, it is true, and it is good to be humble. But, today’s Scripture should also make us meditate on how much God cares for the earth to create the sun, stars, and other lights in the expanse of the heavens for the purpose “to give light on the earth”.
And, God cares for each day on the earth to provide light during the day for work and darkness during the night for rest. As a side note, this is another reason to cease considering each day of God’s creation as billions of years to fit it in man’s theory of evolution. And, less we forget, God pounds the table by stating again and defining a day: “There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.” Verse 19.
“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” John 8:12.
God not only cares for our spiritual life, but God cares also for our earthly life.
“Yours is the day, Yours also is the night;
You have prepared the light and the sun.” Psalm 74:16.
“Thus says the LORD,
Who gives the sun for light by day
And the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
Who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar;
The LORD of hosts is His name:” Jeremiah 31:35.
“It is He who made the earth by His power,
Who established the world by His wisdom;
And by His understanding He has stretched out the heavens.” Jeremiah 10:12.
“3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
4 To Him who alone does great wonders,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
5 To Him who made the heavens with skill,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
6 To Him who spread out the earth above the waters,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
7 To Him who made the great lights,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting:
8 The sun to rule by day,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
9 The moon and stars to rule by night,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.” Psalm 136:3-9.
