“without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” – “whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith.”

Today’s devotion comes from Exodus 4:24-26.

“Now it came about at the lodging place on the way that the LORD met him and sought to put him to death.  Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son’s foreskin and threw it at Moses’ feet, and she said, “You are indeed a bridegroom of blood to me.”  So He let him alone.  At that time she said, “You are a bridegroom of blood”—because of the circumcision.”  Exodus 4:24-26.

Apparently, God sought to put Moses to death because Moses sinned by not circumcising his son when it should have been done.  But, apparently, Zipporah’s immediate action of interceding and performing a bloody circumcision herself in a rush without a religious ceremony, although in a sense shocking in action and words, appeased God, so He let him alone.

Zipporah’s action reminds us of Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross.

“3 He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.” Isaiah 53:4-5.

“And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”  Hebrews 9:22.

“whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith.  This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;”  Romans 3:25.

“For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.”  Hebrews 10:24.

“and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;”  Colossians 2:11.
