“O clap your hands, all peoples; Shout to God with the voice of joy. … He is highly exalted.”

Today’s devotion comes from Psalm chapter 47.

O clap your hands, all peoples;
Shout to God with the voice of joy.

2 For the LORD Most High is to be feared,
A great King over all the earth.
3 He subdues peoples under us
And nations under our feet.
4 He chooses our inheritance for us,
The glory of Jacob whom He loves. Selah.

5 God has ascended with a shout,
The LORD, with the sound of a trumpet.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises;
Sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the King of all the earth;
Sing praises with a skillful psalm.
8 God reigns over the nations,
God sits on His holy throne.
9 The princes of the people have assembled themselves as the people of the God of Abraham,
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
He is highly exalted.” Psalm chapter 47.

————

The theme of the last devotion on how the LORD is exalted continues with today’s Scripture and devotion.

God exalts Himself. God’s sovereignty rules over all, even over salvation.

“God has ascended with a shout,
The LORD, with the sound of a trumpet.” Verse 5.

“7 For God is the King of all the earth;
Sing praises with a skillful psalm.
8 God reigns over the nations,
God sits on His holy throne.” Verses 7 and 8.

“2 For the LORD Most High is to be feared,
A great King over all the earth.
3 He subdues peoples under us
And nations under our feet.
4 He chooses our inheritance for us,
The glory of Jacob whom He loves. Selah. Verses 2-4.

God’s people exalt Him.

“O clap your hands, all peoples;
Shout to God with the voice of joy.” Verse 1.

“6 Sing praises to God, sing praises;
Sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the King of all the earth;
Sing praises with a skillful psalm.” Verses 6-7.

“The princes of the people have assembled themselves as the people of the God of Abraham,
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
He is highly exalted.” Verse 9.

As two side notes, there were two verses which I thought the following searches would be helpful to explain the Reformed interpretation of the following phrase and sentence:  “For the Shields of the Earth Belong to God” and “He chooses our inheritance for us”.

1.  Copilot Search (A.I. search) stated in part:

“In a Reformed (Calvinist) theological framework, Psalm 47:9 — “For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is greatly exalted” — is understood as a prophetic affirmation of God’s universal sovereignty and the sovereign authority of Christ over all earthly powers.”

2.    Copilot Search (A.I. search) stated in part:

In a Reformed (Calvinist) framework, Psalm 47:4 — “He chooses our inheritance for us, the glory of Jacob whom He loves” — is understood as a declaration of God’s sovereign election and the security of His covenant blessings.

1. God’s Sovereign Election

Reformed theology emphasizes that God’s choice is based solely on His own will, not on human merit. The “inheritance” here is not merely the land of Canaan, but the blessed condition of being God’s people — His presence, His ordinances, His grace, and the eternal life He offers. This inheritance is “chosen” in the sense of being set apart and secured for His elect, as in Deuteronomy 7:7–8, where God’s love is the only reason for His choice Bible Hub.”

In conclusion, today’s devotion closes with the following Scriptures.

“O magnify the LORD with me,
And let us exalt His name together.” Psalm 34:3.

“But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;  for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD;  you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.”  1 Peter 2:9-10.

“O sing to the LORD a new song,
For He has done wonderful things,
His right hand and His holy arm have gained the victory for Him.
2 The LORD has made known His salvation;
He has revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered His lovingkindness and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.” Psalm 98:1-3.
