“I loathe the arrogance of Jacob” – “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Today’s devotion comes from Amos chapter 6.  Here is a link to this chapter –

I quote only the following verses.

“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion
And to those who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria,
The distinguished men of the foremost of nations,
To whom the house of Israel comes.

4 Those who recline on beds of ivory
And sprawl on their couches,
And eat lambs from the flock
And calves from the midst of the stall,
5 Who improvise to the sound of the harp,
And like David have composed songs for themselves,
6 Who drink wine from sacrificial bowls
While they anoint themselves with the finest of oils,
Yet they have not grieved over the ruin of Joseph.
7 Therefore, they will now go into exile at the head of the exiles,
And the sprawlers’ banqueting will pass away.

8 The Lord God has sworn by Himself, the LORD God of hosts has declared:
I loathe the arrogance of Jacob,
And detest his citadels;
Therefore I will deliver up the city and all it contains.”  Amos 6:1 and 4-8.

“16 There are six things which the LORD hates,
Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
And hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that run rapidly to evil,
19 A false witness who utters lies,
And one who spreads strife among brothers.”  Proverbs 6:16-19.

“O LORD, God of vengeance,
God of vengeance, shine forth!
2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth,
Render recompense to the proud.
3 How long shall the wicked, O LORD,
How long shall the wicked exult?
4 They pour forth words, they speak arrogantly;
All who do wickedness vaunt themselves.”  Psalm 94:1-4.

“… God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”  James 4:6.
