“Behold I am about to put a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel. I will spare them no longer.” – “They did not repent of their ways.”

Today’s devotion comes from Amos chapter 7.  Here is a link to this chapter –

I quote only the following verses.

“Thus the Lord God showed me, and behold, He was forming a locust-swarm when the spring crop began to sprout.  And behold, the spring crop was after the king’s mowing.  2 And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said,

“Lord God, please pardon!
How can Jacob stand,
For he is small?”
3 The LORD changed His mind about this.
“It shall not be,” said the LORD.

4 Thus the Lord God showed me, and behold, the Lord God was calling to contend with them by fire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the farm land.  5 Then I said,

“Lord God, please stop!
How can Jacob stand, for he is small?”
6 The LORD changed His mind about this.
“This too shall not be,” said the Lord God.

7 Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand.  8 The LORD said to me, “What do you see, Amos?”  And I said, “A plumb line.”  Then the Lord said,

Behold I am about to put a plumb line
In the midst of My people Israel.
I will spare them no longer.
9 “The high places of Isaac will be desolated
And the sanctuaries of Israel laid waste.
Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”  Amos 7:1-8.

The Lord God is patient as shown by verses 3 and 6.  But, the Lord God is also just as shown by verses 7-9.

The plumb line is a tool of justice to determine what is straight and vertical and what is not.  Do we stand straight up vertical to God or not?

We should use God’s patience wisely and repent.  We should not waste the time that God give us to repent.  We should not falsely think that God will set aside His justice if we continue to forsake Him and sin.

“6 “You who have forsaken Me,” declares the LORD,
“You keep going backward.
So I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you;
I am tired of relenting!
7 “I will winnow them with a winnowing fork
At the gates of the land;
I will bereave them of children, I will destroy My people;
They did not repent of their ways.”  Jeremiah 15:6-7.

“For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES.  Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.  How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?  For we know Him who said: “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY.”  And again, THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE.”  It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”  Hebrews 10:26-31.
