Faith: “it is the gift of God”.

Today’s devotion is John 10:40-42.

“40  And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He was staying there.

41  Many came to Him and were saying, “While John performed no sign, yet everything John said about this man was true.”

42  Many believed in Him there.”  John 10:40-42.

———————————————-

Earlier in this chapter, we read about certain Jews who, despite seeing Jesus’ miracles and despite hearing Jesus’ preaching and despite all their religious education and participation, did not believe Jesus, but instead accused Jesus of blaspheming and tried to seize and stone Him.

On the other hand, today, we read about this Scripture about the “many” who heard John’s preaching, and despite the fact that “John performed no sign”, believed in Jesus.

Likewise, today, there are those who, despite attending church many times and hearing good preaching and despite reading much Scripture, do not believe.

Likewise, today, there are those who, despite not attending church as much nor hearing as good preaching nor reading as much Scripture, do believe.

The lesson here is NOT that good preaching and good Scripture reading do not matter.  We should take advantage of these means of grace.

But, through this Scripture and comparison, we can better understand that faith is a gift of God.  “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9.

Here is part of what The Canons of Dordt state about faith.

Article 6.  That some receive the gift of faith from God, and others do not receive it proceeds from God’s eternal decree, “For known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world,” Acts 15:18.  “Who worketh all things after the counsel of his will,” Ephesians 1:11.  According to which decree, he graciously softens the hearts of the elect, however obstinate, and inclines them to believe, while he leaves the non-elect in his just judgment to their own wickedness and obduracy.  And herein is especially displayed the profound, and merciful, and at the same time the righteous discrimination between men, equally involved in ruin;  or that decree of election and reprobation, revealed in the Word of God, which though men of perverse, impure and unstable minds wrest to their own destruction, yet to holy and pious souls affords unspeakable consolation.

“so that you may know and understand” Jesus

Today’s devotion is John 10:30-39.

“31  The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him.

32  Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father;  for which of them are you stoning Me?”

33  The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy;  and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.”

34  Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in your Law, ‘I SAID, YOU ARE GODS’?

35  “If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

36  do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

 37  “If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;

38  but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”

39  Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, and He eluded their grasp.”  John 10:30-39.

——————————–

We are reminded of the following Scripture which clearly state that one of the purposes of the miracles and other works of Jesus was that these miracles and other works testified or witnessed or provided evidence of Jesus’ divine nature:  “so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”

John 5:36
[Witness of Works]  “But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish–the very works that I do–testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.”

John 10:25
“Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me.”

One of the lessons that we can learn is that when we read Scripture, we should focus on, and ask ourselves: “What does this Scripture tell us about Jesus?”

For example, the Scripture for today taught us about Jesus’ divine nature.

For another example, the sermon that I heard last Sunday was on Luke 2:21-35 which tells us of the account of the parents of Jesus bringing Jesus for His circumcision “to carry out for Him the custom of the Law” including Simeon’s praise for seeing Jesus.  The minister reminded the congregation that this Scripture taught us that Jesus perfectly obeyed the Law and that salvation is from the LORD personified in Jesus.  “For my eyes have seen Your salvation,”  Luke 2:30.

On the other hand, Jesus admonished those Jews who were busy searching the Scriptures (and probably took pride in that fact alone) but who were unwilling to come to Jesus and believe in Him.  “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life;  it is these that testify about Me;  and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.”  John 5:39-40.

In conclusion, it is easy to shake our heads, say “tsk, tsk”, thinking how foolish those Jews were, but it also is not sufficient for us today to faithfully attend church or to faithfully read Scripture.  We should humbly use this Scripture for today to renew our dedication to read Scripture and hearing sermons with the goal to know and understand what the Scripture and sermons teach us about Jesus so that we believe Jesus more.

“no one will snatch them out of My hand.”

Today’s devotion is John 10:22-30.

“22  At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem;

23  it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of Solomon.

24  The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

25  Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe;  the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me.

26  “But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep.

 27  “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;

28  and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish;  and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

29  “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all;  and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.

30  “I and the Father are one.”  John 10:22-30.

——————————————-

“Perseverance of the Saints a/k/a Preservation of the Saints” is the “P” of “TULIP”, the Five Points of Calvinism, the Reformed doctrine of salvation. We see this point in verses 27 through 29 of today’s Scripture.

We see “Perseverance of the Saints” in Jesus statement:  “they follow Me”.  We see “Preservation of the Saints in Jesus statement:  “no one will snatch them out of My hand.  “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all;  and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”

Here is part of what the Reformed creed The Canons of Dordt states about it, followed by a link to the whole section (which contains this part) titled:  “FIFTH HEAD OF DOCTRINE Of the Perseverance of the Saints”:

Article 3.  By reason of these remains of indwelling sin, and the temptations of sin and of the world, those who are converted could not persevere in a state of grace, if left to their own strength.  But God is faithful, who having conferred grace, mercifully confirms, and powerfully preserves them herein, even to the end.

Article 4.  Although the weakness of the flesh cannot prevail against the power of God, who confirms and preserves true believers in a state of grace, yet converts are not always so influenced and actuated by the Spirit of God, as not in some particular instances sinfully to deviate from the guidance of divine grace, so as to be seduced by, and to comply with the lusts of the flesh;  they must, therefore, be constant in watching and in prayer, that they be not led into temptation.  When these are neglected, they are not only liable to be drawn into great and heinous sins, by Satan, the world and the flesh, but sometimes by the righteous permission of God actually fall into these evils.  This, the lamentable fall of David, Peter, and other saints described in Holy Scripture, demonstrates.

Article 5.  By such enormous sins, however, they very highly offend God, incur a deadly guilt, grieve the Holy Spirit, interrupt the exercise of faith, very grievously wound their consciences, and sometimes lose the sense of God’s favor, for a time, until on their returning into the right way of serious repentance, the light of God’s fatherly countenance again shines upon them.

Article 6.  But God, who is rich in mercy, according to his unchangeable purpose of election, does not wholly withdraw the Holy Spirit from his own people, even in their melancholy falls;  nor suffers them to proceed so far as to lose the grace of adoption, and forfeit the state of justification, or to commit sins unto death;  nor does he permit them to be totally deserted, and to plunge themselves into everlasting destruction.

Article 7.  For in the first place, in these falls he preserves them in the incorruptible seed of regeneration from perishing, or being totally lost;  and again, by his Word and Spirit, certainly and effectually renews them to repentance, to a sincere and godly sorrow for their sins, that they may seek and obtain remission in the blood of the Mediator, may again experience the favor of a reconciled God, through faith adore his mercies, and henceforward more diligently work out their own salvation with fear and trembling.

Article 8.  Thus, it is not in consequence of their own merits, or strength, but of God’s free mercy, that they do not totally fall from faith and grace, nor continue and perish finally in their backslidings;  which, with respect to themselves, is not only possible, but would undoubtedly happen;  but with respect to God, it is utterly impossible, since his counsel cannot be changed, nor his promise fail, neither can the call according to his purpose be revoked, nor the merit, intercession and preservation of Christ be rendered ineffectual, nor the sealing of the Holy Spirit be frustrated or obliterated.

Article 9.  Of this preservation of the elect to salvation, and of their perseverance in the faith, true believers for themselves may and ought to obtain assurance according to the measure of their faith, whereby they arrive at the certain persuasion, that they ever will continue true and living members of the church;  and that they experience forgiveness of sins, and will at last inherit eternal life.

Article 10.  This assurance, however, is not produced by any peculiar revelation contrary to, or independent of the Word of God;  but springs from faith in God’s promises, which he has most abundantly revealed in his Word for our comfort;  from the testimony of the Holy Spirit, witnessing with our spirit, that we are children and heirs of God, Romans 8:16;  and lastly, from a serious and holy desire to preserve a good conscience, and to perform good works.  And if the elect of God were deprived of this solid comfort, that they shall finally obtain the victory, and of this infallible pledge or earnest of eternal glory, they would be of all men the most miserable.

Article 11.  The Scripture moreover testifies, that believers in this life have to struggle with various carnal doubts, and that under grievous temptations they are not always sensible of this full assurance of faith and certainty of persevering.  But God, who is the Father of all consolation, does not suffer them to be tempted above that they are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that they may be able to bear it, I Corinthians 10:13, and by the Holy Spirit again inspires them with the comfortable assurance of persevering.

“Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,”

Today’s devotion is John 10:19-21.

“19  A division occurred again among the Jews because of these words.

20  Many of them were saying,  “He has a demon and is insane.  Why do you listen to Him?”

21  Others were saying, “These are not the sayings of one demon-possessed.  A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?”  John 10:19-21.

—————————————

An understanding of Scripture may have helped those “others” who were supporting Jesus by saying:  “”These are not the sayings of one demon-possessed.  A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?”  They would understand that the miracle of opening the eyes of the blind is a divine action.

Psalm 146:8
“The LORD opens the eyes of the blind;  The LORD raises up those who are bowed down;  The LORD loves the righteous;”

Isaiah 35:5
“Then the eyes of the blind will be opened And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped.”

Isaiah 42:7
“To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon And those who dwell in darkness from the prison.”

We may not be confronted to exactly respond to an accusation that Jesus is demon-possessed.  But, we may hear something like:  “Don’t you believe in science?  Why do you believe in fable of creation, rather than the science of evolution?”

An understanding of Scripture could also help us to respond.  We would understand that creation is a divine action.

Genesis 1:1
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

We would know that creation did not occur over billions or millions of years, or even over weeks.  We would know that Scripture pounds the table six times in Genesis Chapter 1, defining a day of creation six times, once for each of the six days, as:  “And there was evening and there was morning”.

We could then respond to such a scoffing of creation with some Scripture and reason, something like the following:  ” ‘The heavens are telling of the glory of God;  And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.’  Psalm 19:1.  The intricate design and beauty and efficiency and diversity in every animal, plant, and even in snowflakes, are all compelling and cumulative evidence of the work of a creator.  If you see something as simple as a footprint, you may ask:  “Who made the footprint?”  You don’t think:  “Random movement of dirt made the footprint.”  How much more consistent with both Scripture and reason is creation than evolution!  And, if you do believe in some Creator, why would it be more believable that it took a Creator millions of years (compared to six days) to create?  How much more consistent with Scripture, such as in Genesis Chapter 1, and even consistent with reason, is the time of creation of six days than millions of years!”

The Scripture for today tells us nothing as to the impact of the defense of Jesus by these others in verse 21.  And in regards to our defense of creation, we must realize that it is by faith, not reason, that “…  we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.”  Hebrews 11:3.

But, God can open our minds and hearts to understand and believe Scripture.  “Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,”  Luke 24:45  “A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening;  and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul.”  Acts 16:14

We also can and should realize that more important than opening blind eyes is the divine action of opening our minds and hearts to understand and believe Scripture.  We can read and quote Scripture in the hope and prayer that God will open our own mind and heart, and open the minds and hearts of others, to understand and believe Scripture.

“I lay down My life for the sheep.”

Today’s devotion is John 10:11-18.

“11  “I am the good shepherd;  the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

12  “He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

13  “He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep.

14  “I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,

15  even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father;  and I lay down My life for the sheep.

16  “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold;  I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice;  and they will become one flock with one shepherd.

17  “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again.

18  “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative.  I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.  This commandment I received from My Father.”  John 10:11-18.

—————————–

This is the central message of this text.  “I lay down My life for the sheep.”

So, what does Jesus state about this central message?

First, Jesus states:  “I am the good shepherd;  the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.”  Jesus defines a good shepherd as One who lays down His life for the sheep.  In other words, the most important thing that Jesus does for us is not guide us nor provide for us nor even protect us.  The most important thing that Jesus does for us is lay down His life for us, that is, atone for our sins by His perfect sacrifice performed by His shedding of His blood and death on the cross.

Second, Jesus informs us that this is a limited or particular atonement by His words:  “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold;  I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice;  and they will become one flock with one shepherd.”  These are Jesus’ sheep.  Jesus laid down his life for His sheep, not all the sheep.

Third, Jesus reveals that He voluntarily lays down His life for the sheep on His own initiative.  “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative.  He also states:  “Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?”  Matthew 26:53.  This statement assures us of Jesus’ love for us, His sheep.  Jesus did not lay down His life for us only out of a sense of compulsion or obligation or duty.

In conclusion, these three points combine to reveal the depth of Jesus’ love for us.  Jesus does what is most important for us.  Jesus loves us with a special and particular love like the love a husband has for His wife.  Jesus, Himself, loves us;  He voluntarily laid down His life for us on His own initiative.

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;  and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.”  Ephesians 3:14-19.

Abundant Life: Revealing, Continuing, and Overflowing

Today’s devotion is John 10:6-10.

“6  This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them.

7  So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

8  “All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.

9  “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

10  “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;  I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”  John 10:6-10.

——————–

What is this abundant life?

This abundant life is revealing;  it is life that reveals God to us so that we may know and understand Him.

John 17:3
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

2 Peter 1:3
“seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”

1 John 5:20
“And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ.  This is the true God and eternal life.”

This abundant life is continuing;  it is eternal.

John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

John 3:36
“He who believes in the Son has eternal life;  but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

John 4:14
“but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

John 5:24
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life;  it is these that testify about Me;”

John 6:27
“Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”

John 6:40
“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

John 6:47
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.”

John 6:54
“He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

John 6:68
“Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have words of eternal life.”

John 10:28
“and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.”

John 17:2
“even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.”

Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

1 Timothy 1:16
“Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.”

Titus 1:2
“in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago,”

Titus 3:7
“so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

1 John 1:2
“and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us–”

1 John 2:25
“This is the promise which He Himself made to us:  eternal life.”

1 John 5:11
“And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”

1 John 5:13
“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.”

This abundant life is overflowing.

“O taste and see that the LORD is good;
How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
    O fear the LORD, you His saints;
For to those who fear Him there is no want.
    The young lions do lack and suffer hunger;
But they who seek the LORD shall not be in want of any good thing.”  Psalm 34:8-10.

Psalm 84:11
“For the LORD God is a sun and shield;  The LORD gives grace and glory;  No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
         You have anointed my head with oil;
         My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever
.”  Psalm 23:5-6.

“Honor the LORD from your wealth
         And from the first of all your produce;
So your barns will be filled with plenty
And your vats will overflow with new wine
.”  Proverbs 3:9-10.

Zechariah 1:17
“Again, proclaim, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, “My cities will again overflow with prosperity, and the LORD will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem”

Malachi 3:10
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.”

Romans 8:32
“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?”

1 Corinthians 2:9
“but just as it is written,” THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.”

The Irresistable Grace of God’s Voice Toward His Sheep

This is the third and final devotion focusing on John 10:4-5.

“4  “When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.

5  “A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”  John 10:4-5.

———————————–

We have seen the importance of fearing God’s Voice.  We have seen the importance of listening and obeying the right voice.  We may try (and should try) out of our own alleged “free-will”, wisdom, sense of duty, and even gratitude, to fear God’s voice, listen and obey God’s voice, but we will still not be able to follow Him without the irresistible grace of God’s voice toward His sheep, the elect.

Here is part of what Scriptures (with added emphasis) state about this irresistible grace which causes us to follow.

“1  The LORD is my shepherd,
         I shall not want.
    2  He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
    3  He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.”  Psalm 23:1-3.

Ezekiel 36:27
“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.”

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him;  and I will raise him up on the last day.  “It is written in the prophets, ‘AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT OF GOD.’  Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.”  John 6:44-45.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”  Ephesians 2:10.

Hebrews 8:10
“FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD:  I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MINDS, AND I WILL WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS.  AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.”

Here is part of what The Canons of Dordt state about this irresistible grace which cause us to follow.

Article 10.  But that others who are called by the gospel, obey the call, and are converted, is not to be ascribed to the proper exercise of free will, whereby one distinguishes himself above others, equally furnished with grace sufficient for faith and conversions, as the proud heresy of Pelagius maintains;  but it must be wholly ascribed to God, who as he has chosen his own from eternity in Christ, so he confers upon them faith and repentance, rescues them from the power of darkness, and translates them into the kingdom of his own Son, that they may show forth the praises of him, who hath called them out of darkness into his marvelous light;  and may glory not in themselves, but in the Lord according to the testimony of the apostles in various places.

Article 11.  But when God accomplishes his good pleasure in the elect, or works in them true conversion, he not only causes the gospel to be externally preached to them, and powerfully illumines their minds by his Holy Spirit, that they may rightly understand and discern the things of the Spirit of God;  but by the efficacy of the same regenerating Spirit, pervades the inmost recesses of the man; he opens the closed, and softens the hardened heart, and circumcises that which was uncircumcised, infuses new qualities into the will, which though heretofore dead, he quickens;  from being evil, disobedient and refractory, he renders it good, obedient, and pliable; actuates and strengthens it, that like a good tree, it may bring forth the fruits of good actions.

Article 12.  And this is the regeneration so highly celebrated in Scripture, and denominated a new creation:  a resurrection from the dead, a making alive, which God works in us without our aid.  But this is in no wise effected merely by the external preaching of the gospel, by moral suasion, or such a mode of operation, that after God has performed his part, it still remains in the power of man to be regenerated or not, to be converted, or to continue unconverted;  but it is evidently a supernatural work, most powerful, and at the same time most delightful, astonishing, mysterious, and ineffable; not inferior in efficacy to creation, or the resurrection from the dead, as the Scripture inspired by the author of this work declares;  so that all in whose heart God works in this marvelous manner, are certainly, infallibly, and effectually regenerated, and do actually believe.  – Whereupon the will thus renewed, is not only actuated and influenced by God, but in consequence of this influence, becomes itself active.  Wherefore also, man is himself rightly said to believe and repent, by virtue of that grace received.

Today’s devotion continues to focus on John 10:4-5.

“4  “When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.

5  “A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”  John 10:4-5.

There are 382 verses with the word “voice” in it.  Click here: BibleGateway.com – Keyword Search: voice    As I started with Genesis 3:17, I quickly began to understand the importance of listening to the right voice.  Some say:  Just listen!  But, Scripture, quickly and from the very beginning, contrasts the dangers and curses of listening and following the wrong voice compared to the blessings of listening and obeying the right voice.  Here are just a few examples from the first two books of the Bible.

See what happens when one listens and follows the wrong voice.

Genesis 3:17
Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;  Cursed is the ground because of you;  In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life.

Genesis 16:2
So Sarai said to Abram, “Now behold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children.  Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her.”  And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

But, see what happens when one listens and obeys the right voice.

Genesis 22:18
“In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

Exodus 15:26
“And He said, ” If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the LORD, am your healer.”

Exodus 19:5
” ‘Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine;”

It is clear that we should listen and obey God’s voice to avoid dangers and curses and to obtain blessings.

And, how so we listen to God’s voice?   We read and meditate upon Scripture and true doctrine like the Reformed Confessions which summarizes Scripture.

And, do we just listen to God’s voice?  No, we should obey God’s voice and do what He commands.

“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.  For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;  for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.  But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.”  James 1:22-25.

Starting with the Fear of Hearing God’s Voice

Today’s devotion is John 10:4-5.

Click here: BibleGateway.com – Keyword Search: voice    As I began to read these verses, I quickly began to understand that there were a number of very important messages that should be treated separately.

For the message today, I thought we should start with Deuteronomy 4:31-40, because, first of all, it fills us with the fear of hearing His voice, because we know:  “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”  Proverbs 9:10

So, first, here is the fear of hearing God’s voice.  As stated in verse 33, “Has any people heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, as you have heard it, and survived?”  Deuteronomy 4:33.

After Moses spoke the Ten Commandments to the people of Israel, Moses reminded the people of Israel of their own words about the fear of hearing God’s voice:  “You said, ‘Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire;  we have seen today that God speaks with man, yet he lives.  ‘Now then why should we die?  For this great fire will consume us;  if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer, then we will die.  ‘For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?”  Deuteronomy 5:24-26.

But, there is hope!  This Deuteronomy 4:31-40 Scripture also teaches us the compassion of God and the overall importance of listening to the voice of the LORD.

“For the LORD your God is a compassionate God;  He will not fail you nor destroy you nor forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them.  “Indeed, ask now concerning the former days which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and inquire from one end of the heavens to the other.  Has anything been done like this great thing, or has anything been heard like it?

“Has any people heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, as you have heard it, and survived?  “Or has a god tried to go to take for himself a nation from within another nation by trials, by signs and wonders and by war and by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm and by great terrors, as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

“To you it was shown that you might know that the LORD, He is God;  there is no other besides Him.  “Out of the heavens He let you hear His voice to discipline you; and on earth He let you see His great fire, and you heard His words from the midst of the fire.

“Because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their descendants after them.  And He personally brought you from Egypt by His great power, driving out from before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in and to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is today.

“Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that the LORD, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.  “So you shall keep His statutes and His commandments which I am giving you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may live long on the land which the LORD your God is giving you for all time.”  Deuteronomy 4:31-40.

The Door is the Blood of Christ

Today’s devotion is John 10:1-3.

“1  “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.

2  “But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep.

3  “To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”  John 10:1-3.

What is the door?

When I did a keyword search of the word “door”, I found an amazing number of verses (217) which had the word “door” in it.  Click here: BibleGateway.com – Keyword Search: door  I gained insight from some of the verses of the importance of “door” in Scripture, particularly in the Old Testament, and why the word “door” was used in the Scripture for today.

Here are verses in the Old Testament which speak about the importance of “door”.

Exodus 12:23

Leviticus 17:5
“The reason is so that the sons of Israel may bring their sacrifices which they were sacrificing in the open field, that they may bring them in to the LORD, at the doorway of the tent of meeting to the priest, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to the LORD.”

Leviticus 17:6
“The priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of the LORD at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and offer up the fat in smoke as a soothing aroma to the LORD.”

Leviticus 17:9
“and does not bring it to the doorway of the tent of meeting to offer it to the LORD, that man also shall be cut off from his people.”

Leviticus 19:21
” ‘He shall bring his guilt offering to the LORD to the doorway of the tent of meeting, a ram for a guilt offering.”

Numbers 20:6
“Then Moses and Aaron came in from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to them;”

“You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up.  “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your sons may be multiplied on the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens remain above the earth.”  Deuteronomy 11:19-21.

Deuteronomy 31:15
“The LORD appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood at the doorway of the tent.”

The repeated use of the word “door” in the Old Testament, the importance of the “door” in the Old Testament, and how blood is associated with the word “door” is used in the Old Testament all leads us to the conclusion that the blood of Christ is the “door” of salvation in the Scripture for today.

So, what does the New Testament state about the importance of blood of Christ and what it allows?

Hebrews 9:7
“but into the second, only the high priest enters once a year, not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance.”

Hebrews 9:12
“and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.”

Hebrews 9:25
“nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood that is not his own.”

Hebrews 10:19
“Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,”

Notice how the high priest could not enter without taking blood!

Notice how that fits with the explanation in today’s Scripture that “he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.”  In other words, if anyone pretends to be a Savior or Shepherd without bringing blood, he is a thief and a robber!

Notice how Christ, “through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.”!

Notice how “we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,”!

And, how does the sheep hear His voice?  By the blood of Christ!

Here is what The Canons of Dordt states about what was accomplished by the blood of Christ, including the ability to hear His voice (which is faith) with emphasis added.

Article 8. For this was the sovereign counsel, and most gracious will and purpose of God the Father, that the quickening and saving efficacy of the most precious death of his Son should extend to all the elect, for bestowing upon them alone the gift of justifying faith, thereby to bring them infallibly to salvation: that is, it was the will of God, that Christ by the blood of the cross, whereby he confirmed the new covenant, should effectually redeem out of every people, tribe, nation, and language, all those, and those only, who were from eternity chosen to salvation, and given to him by the Father; that he should confer upon them faith, which together with all the other saving gifts of the Holy Spirit, he purchased for them by his death; should purge them from all sin, both original and actual, whether committed before or after believing; and having faithfully preserved them even to the end, should at last bring them free from every spot and blemish to the enjoyment of glory in his own presence forever.
